@scottmerkin: That was Abreu's second homer on the seventh pitch or later in an at-bat. Eight on the 2nd pitch and 3 on the first (per @baseball_ref

Jose Abreu general discussion
QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jun 27, 2014 -> 04:05 PM) And the answer at this point is who knows? Abreu hasn't played half a season yet and Rizzo's only been good for half a season. They're both fairly young and both Chicago teams should feel pretty good about their 1B situations. This answer is not acceptable and something must be determined right now!

QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 27, 2014 -> 04:16 PM) In their defense, basically their whole team is expiring next year. Clean slate for moves. Who would be available next off season as a FA? There will be no LBJ, possibly no love, I'm curious who the pitch could be made for

Keppinger DFA'd
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 21, 2014 -> 08:54 PM) There's got to be something missing in this story. Seems with as well-respected as Joe Maddon is around the game, he SHOULD/WOULD have had problems/issues with Keppinger as well.Surely, Hahn's going to do his due dilgence with a three year contract. Ironic, in that the last three year contract went to someone even more universally-loved in the clubhouse than even Gillaspie (Mark Teahen) who couldn't really play baseball well. Maybe he was going through some personal problems, like Alexei last year with his father-in-law. Maybe Maddon just knew how to work with an asshole and didnt publicize it.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Jun 27, 2014 -> 10:21 AM) I get your argument as a whole but, said euroleague MVP, Patrick Beverly, just finished playing 30+ min per game for a playoff team so that was pretty weak to bring up Fair enough, but I was asking because I forgot who it was, lol. That was quite a long time ago and the argument now is similar

QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jun 27, 2014 -> 10:11 AM) Brad Miller was undrafted and had a pretty damn solid career. Like i said, there are few exceptions but on the whole they are NBDL fodder. There just isnt a lot of value in UDFA in the NBA. Hell, there is very little value in the second rounders right now.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Jun 27, 2014 -> 10:00 AM) Couldn't tell ya....Draft was just crazy deep. Like the announcers were saying there was 1st round talent in the 2nd round so you gotta figure there's some good talent going undrafted. Dude had 344 career blocks in 122 games.... But at the same time, decent to good athletic centers tend to get scooped up quickly in the NBA, no? Remember when you and RZZZA (that guy) were arguing with me that the Bulls need to bring in the euroleague MVP and he can dunk and stuff? Where is that guy now?

QUOTE (scs787 @ Jun 27, 2014 -> 09:51 AM) How can you not like this guy and think Thibs could turn him into a solid backup center....Between him and Young I think there's a solid backup center out there. I remember bringing his name up during the college season and I really liked him ever since... Why wasnt he drafted?

It would be cool if UDFAs could come up and take jobs, but in the NBA, the cream rises to the top immediately. Guys either are NBA quality or they are not

Jose Abreu general discussion
QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jun 27, 2014 -> 09:18 AM) Abreu is as good right now, as a rookie, as Konerko ever was and pretty close to what Lee was at their respective peaks. Abreu currently has a 149 wRC+. Konerko only had one season that high or better (158 in 2010) and Derrek Lee only had two such seasons (170 in 2005, 150 in 2009). If you want to look at WAR, Abreu is on pace for about 5.3 fWAR this season. Konerko's career highs were 3.7 in 2005 and 3.6 in 2010. Derrek Lee's career highs were 6.8 in 2005 and 5.3 in 2009 with no other season over 4. That surprises me, I figured he would have approached that in 03 when the Marlins took out the Cubs, he was great

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 27, 2014 -> 09:23 AM) I like Young but I think you are kind of on point here. There is a lot of value in the UDFA's though. However if Craft really does sign with the Pacers I will be forced to hate him. Just go to medical school young man. I just dont agree with that in the NBA. UDFA's that succeed in the NBA are a big exception to the rule.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 27, 2014 -> 09:18 AM) I think the years of pent up anxiety and disappointment in the Bulls conservative roster management (including a collection of assets that win games, but are never as attractive as other teams assets that lose games) are creating a bizarre love affair for me with Doug McDermott. I don't claim to be a scout. I only watch mizzou college bball and then hate the rest of the sport. But the fact that everyone was terrified the bulls would trade up to get this kid and then we did just that, makes me think that this has to work, right? I mean this is the most aggressive move I've ever seen the Bulls make. We have to hit 100%. We deserve it. And then next year Mcdermott is going to post up Anthony and do some weird ooopsy woopsy layup that goes in and I will go crazy. And then he'll get posterized by Lebron and we'll be talking about the 2018 plan to sign Jabari. Come on now, Lebron would do that to McDermott, Harris, or Hood. It doesnt matter, Lebron is an equal opportunity posterizer. McBuckets was brought in to shoot the ball, thats all. He should be fine in that role, and he should be good under Thibs. He is a coaches kid, he is a hard worker, knows the game, and has a very pretty shot

QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 26, 2014 -> 09:01 PM) At this point I'd rather Bulls get some one they targeted than keep collecting assets they won't use. High basketball IQ, great shooter, give him to Thibs. I don't give a s*** about backup point guards. Check out how many effing pgs were just drafted. It's the easiest position to fill. Hell, check out how many PGs the bulls picked up off the street that got paid after Thibs let them play.
