  1. QUOTE(3E8 @ Jun 24, 2005 -> 07:12 PM) Remember how everyone was scared about loss of power. 5th in majors in HR's. Yeah, I did a calculation earlier. The Sox are on pace for 200. With Frank's return, it could be 210.
  2. Did you see those explosions in St. Louis today? The Cardinals probably are the "hottest" team.
  3. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jun 24, 2005 -> 04:17 PM) What was the largest margin of victory in any of the Sox/Cubs games? Was todays game? Sorry if the subject already came up. Yes, this was the largest margin. I just read it somewhere, but I don't remember where.
  4. Baker may get more grief, but it's because of his AAA players.
  5. QUOTE(longshot7 @ Jun 24, 2005 -> 04:13 PM) Ozzie calls everyone "this kid" - even Contreras and El Duque, who I think are older than him Yeah, I know. I still get a kick out of it everytime he says it about an older player.
  6. Ya gotta love Ozzie. Frank's what? Four years younger than Ozzie? Ozzie calls him "this keed."
  7. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jun 24, 2005 -> 03:49 PM) MEN AGAINST BOYS. Whenever I hear that, it reminds of how one announcer described Super Bowl XX
  8. I know it's meaningless, but I hope Viz doesn't blow our chance at overtaking the Angels for best team ERA.
  9. I hate to admit I visit the dark side, but I enjoy reading the Cubs forum when they're getting shelled. They basically called it "game over" when it was 2-1. It looks like they were right. It must suck to be a Cubs fan.
  10. Cotts was the last pitcher on the staff to give up a HR. Good job, Neil.
  11. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jun 22, 2005 -> 10:36 PM) Why do I not remember this? I saw Allen hit the back wall of the CF bullpen on a line, but I don't ever recall anybody hitting the scoreboard. Since it was more than thirty years ago, the memory doesn't have a lot of context. It was on a Wednesday afternoon. Harry was doing his broadcast from the CF bleachers, and we were out there. I remember the ball smacking the scoreboard hard. That, and the sound it made are clear as if it happened yesterday. But now that I think about it, it was probably during BP.
  12. Wow! Now that's news. The fact that the Cubs draw more than the Sox has been the best kept secret in baseball. Kudos to CBS for enlightening the baseball world. Gimme a f***in break.
  13. Too many memories to choose, but I guess the most memorable was a homerun, but not by a Sox player. My school buddies and I were at a game in '68. I was eleven years old, and it had to be one of the first games my mother let me go to on my own. It was an awful year for the Sox, attendance was sparse, and the three of us were in the left field upper deck, all by ourselves (The park was empty, and we moved around throughout the game.) We were watching Mickey Mantle bat, and he hit a homerun that landed not twenty feet from us. It hit one of the empty seats and bounced away. That's something I'll never forget.
  14. I'm not positive, but it looks like those rankings were compiled before yesterday's games. For Rogers, writing "Won't stay here after Angels debacle" only makes sense as an afterthought (edit). If last night's Texas game were included in the rankings, they wouldn't write that. He would have already been moved down. Therefore, I think Mark is probably a bit higher than sixth. (Now that I look at the stats, I'm positive this doesn't include yesterday. The higher the number, the better the stat. Halliday has 27 points for ERA, and Mark has 24. Buehrle passed Halliday in ERA yesterday, so he should have more points than Halliday for that stat.)
  15. To put the salary vs. talent argument into perspective. Players' contracts have been sold outright in the past. You could argue that one team received absolutely nothing in return, but that isn't the case. Money has to be considered. In many cases, such as the Lee trade, money is the deciding factor. In other cases, such as selling a player, money is the only factor.
  16. QUOTE(Jimenez4MVP @ Jun 23, 2005 -> 11:20 AM) Yes but you like others do NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT I WAS SAYING.. Um duh, I know money matters.. but what I was talking about was what we got inreturn for Lee.. I was looking at it that way, NOT talking about the money, I was talking bout what we got in return.. understand? The contract goes with the player. You can't separate the two. In fact, legally, what is traded is the contract. The player is just part of that contract. What we traded was Lee's contract, and we received Pods' and Vizcaino's contracts in return. That is the only accurate way to assess the trade.
  17. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jun 23, 2005 -> 11:19 AM) In MLB salary has EVERYTHING to do with a trade. Do you think in the real world the Rangers would have accepted just Alfonzo Soriano for Alex Rodriguez? You are kidding yourself if you leave out the $7 million in payroll the Sox freed up, because that is why the deal was done. They knew they need to fill depth and didn't have the money to do it. If they don't do this deal, you are looking at another year of Ben Davis on the roster, Felix Diaz and company in the 5th starter spot, and some 2 more AAA pitchers in the pen in place of Vizcaino, and Hermanson. The money DOES matter. In fact to this team it was critical. If we don't make the Carlos Lee trade, this team is floundering in 3rd place, yet again, sucking wind to the Twins. No kidding. It's interesting how salary is or isn't an issue, depending on the trade being discussed. I remember threads (not sure if they were here) on how the Sox could get Todd Helton because Colorado wants to dump the huge salary. Salary is always an issue, and sometimes it is the only issue.
  18. This year's team is much different than last year. The Sox have won without Ordonez, Thomas and Lee. Last year's pitching staff sucked. Buehrle was the only starter with an ERA under 4.00. Shingo and Marte were the only reliable bullpen arms. As long as the pitching holds up, the chance of collapse is slim.
  19. Dick Allen hitting the old Comiskey scoreboard.
  20. QUOTE(Antonio Osuna @ Jun 22, 2005 -> 07:55 PM) Big whoop. This team has won absolutely nothing. The 1983 team was up 20 games at one point. The 2001 Mariners were around that too. The 2000 White Sox were in the lower single-digits consistently. They faded without winning a playoff game. The 2003 Royals were up 7.5 at the All-Star Game, 8.5 over the team that won the division that year. Where are the 2003 World Series flags at Kauffman? We must never, ever lose sight of reality, folks. This team has yet to win anything, this team is still vulnerable. This team can still improve, and I hope that Kenny isn't among those who is drunk with joy over our recent win streak. It sure sounds like Ozzie isn't. That said, it could be worse. Far worse. There's nothing wrong with celebrating that. But let's not go overboard. Don't ruin the party. And we ARE talking about reality. In case you haven't noticed, the original poster simply mentioned a 10 game lead. Where in that do you not see reality, and where is it implied that the team has won anything yet?
  21. QUOTE(Soxnbears01 @ Jun 22, 2005 -> 07:52 PM) this came so fast, seems like yesterday the twins were 4 behind and i was worried. I know what you mean, but the Twins have been pathetic for the last week and a half. The Sox have never played that bad all season. I said it earlier, cautiously, and I'll say it again. The Twins are not that good this year.
  22. QUOTE(Rohan @ Jun 22, 2005 -> 04:03 PM) Yeah that's pretty cool.. Gotta love Everetts signature thing... It's a lot better than Corky the ex-Northside Clown's ridiculous kiss and heart taps. The only thing about pointing to the sky is that half the players do it now.
  23. Chuck Tanner was an excellent manager. I remember when they hired him. He turned a god awful team into a winner, and he was able to tame Dick Allen.
  24. I agree. Kenny is no-nonsense, put up or shut up. I respect him for that, and I trust he'll do the right thing, whatever that turns out to be.
