  1. We have the most outs given up in MLB... 2. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 09:55 AM) There are obvious complications to that as well...AJ getting caught stealing in a game may be a bad thing, but if the next guy coming up is hitting .160, then it might hurt more or less than CS at other times. I wonder how many sacrifice bunt outs we've given up 34 successful sac bunts out of 43 tries.
  3. How do I run a query on that site to rank all teams for total outs given up? I'd be more than happy to do it.
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 09:45 AM) That number is useless without context. How does it compare to what other teams have given up? The next closest for CS is 39. Not sure about the others.
  5. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 09:32 AM) Productive, sure. You can be productive long after that if you're healthy. Your exact phrase was "Past their prime". I believe it's almost uniformly agreed that most players hit their "Prime years" somewhere between age 26-31. Almost by definition, anyone you bring in after age 30 is past their prime and could be criticized under that standard if they don't perform. Whatever. I think most people got the gist of where I was going with a potential Beltran acquisition.
  6. According to baseball reference we have 56 caught stealing, 16 picked off, 3 picked off caught stealing, and 39 outs on base for a total of 114 outs given away. There's your rationale for getting rid of Ozzie ball.
  7. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 09:28 AM) He was 31. Players can still be very productive until 32 or 33 for the most part.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 09:25 AM) Like Jermaine Dye and Freddy Garcia. Jermaine Dye wasn't past his prime when we acquired him. And more like Griffey, Andruw, Erstad, Kotsay, etc.
  9. Yesterday is the perfect example of why so many of us were concerned with Freddy in the long term for this season. I don't know how much gas is left in his tank. At the very least we now know who our starting 4 are if we make the playoffs.
  10. I'm sick of bringing in past their prime, injury riddled players to this ball club.
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 08:45 AM) And I'd say he's walked something of a tightrope for 1/2 of both of his starts. No doubt but he has the ability to get out of a jam with a key strikeout. And this year he's 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA, 10Ks and 3BBs against his next opponent, the Tigers.
  12. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 08:42 AM) So, are you or are you not going to hold Jackson to a higher standard than Hudson? I would say yes and he is delivering so far. It's the walks that make me want to throw the TV out the window and he's not giving up many.
  13. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 08:23 AM) Depends on how he gives them up. IMO, if you combine innings 1-3 against the Tigers and innings 4-6 against the Orioles, that's a 5 earned run game, all it would take is 1 hit to capitalize and blow it open. If you combine innings 4-7 against the Tigers and 1-3 against the Orioles, that's 7 shutout, 1-2 hit innings, and he's probably good to go for 8+ on that night. I want to see more of that middle-innings guy. Am I reading this right? You're saying he would have given up a lot of runs if the opponent were to get that 1 key hit? Well he didn't give up that key hit and has 2 consecutive quality starts while only walking 1 per game. What if Hudson didn't give up a million walks and hits against KC last month? He would have had a great start!
  14. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 05:51 AM) It's like they say, in baseball momentum only goes up to the next day's starting pitcher. The Sox are throwing one of their top two pitchers out there, while the Twins are bringing up a guy from the minors who struggled his last two seasons in the big leagues. Tonight's the type of game the Sox need to win with the pitching matchup in their favor. The Twins are hitting the ball well now, but the junk that the Sox pitchers were throwing had a lot to do with their HR outburst last night. Danks should be able to quiet their bats. Danks is hit or miss against the Twins. I'm not going to be overconfident. Could be a slug fest.
  15. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 10, 2010 -> 10:08 PM) And they tried and got outbid. Sometimes players dont automatically want to come to the Sox. In fact at the deadline, KW tried AGAIN to bring a serious bat into the lineup, once again denied. If you don't have a suitable replacement lined up then don't get rid of him.
  16. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 10, 2010 -> 10:06 PM) 99 percent of the people on here didnt want Thome back while watching him last season. Hindsight is a fun game. But we all assumed he would be replaced by a major league bat and not Mark Kotsay.
  17. QUOTE (mcgrad70 @ Aug 10, 2010 -> 09:45 PM) It is falling and for all you Pena fans out there, your boy did it again. The had momentum going into the 3rd and Pena took it all away. Like he does again and again and again. Who did you want to come in to relieve Freddy? Thornton?
  18. QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 10, 2010 -> 09:42 PM) Yup, I heard it on Boers and Bernstein, Bernstein brought up Thome's numbers and I just shook my head. .404 wOBA...would be second best on the team right behind Konerko. He must really hate Thome for some reason. For whatever reason he has to use every opportunity to tell everyone how he couldn't use him in our lineup.
  19. I don't see how we win this division. The Twins have a better 25 man roster and an easier schedule. Oh yeah...they own us head to head too.
  20. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 10, 2010 -> 09:36 PM) That doesn't even take into account the numerous outs we've given up with bunts. Or runners picked off. I thought CS would include those but looking at our box score Pierre's pick off wasn't included as a CS.
  21. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Aug 10, 2010 -> 09:33 PM) Before the game, wasn't Ozzie saying something about how he couldn't have Thome on this roster? What a joke he is at times (when it comes to his stupid man-crushes) What a brain dead moron.
  22. ML leading 56 CS for the Sox including Rios' tonight. Next highest is 39. That's a heck of a lot of outs to give away.
  23. QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Aug 10, 2010 -> 08:38 PM) Still if they go on to win the AL Central, they ll do their usual one and done, especially if the play the Yanks. Who gives a s*** what they do in the playoffs. The fact that they make it there means we don't. That's what bothers me.
  24. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Aug 10, 2010 -> 07:42 PM) Man, tonight is a great reason why losing Peavy hurts BAD. Would we have gotten Jackson if Peavy didn't get hurt? Probably not and Freddy would still be the #5 starter.
