Wow. I could see him having them outside the top 5 but near middle of the pack? Sure, many of the prospects in the system may have some warts but are there really 12 others that have better prospects or fewer warts?!?

Padres are not a serious suitor. This is all smoke and mirrors to appease a fan base still irritated with the “paying down debt” narrative Padres spun just a little while ago. To further prove that point, the original interest was if the bidding and price stays low enough to their liking. And then the recent “leaks” that they were leaning towards Harper for the marketing power he provides just as Hosmer was vouching for Moustakas. This is all agent and team BS to help one another...agents with “mystery team and more bidders” and Padres with “we are trying.”

And on top of it, if we were to develop or draft more Eloy or Moncada type premium rated prospects, we could use those to get someone who is on a Sale-type team friendly contract. Good to plan for next 5 years by estimation but trying to project that out 10 years is a fool’s errand. The best we can and likely will do is only sign both with potential opt-outs near the end or swell opt closer to those earlier years when you can see what you truly have in the current crop of prospects.

If they are of the now popular “swell-opt” variety, we rejoice as we have flexibility in 3 years to opt in or let go and sign someone else or focus on internal talent ready to be paid (Lopez, Moncada, et al)
