QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jun 5, 2006 -> 08:53 AM) Stories like these are why I love the game of baseball. I remember situations and stories like this from my own childhood, and can't wait for my youngin to have her own memories like her dad, and her dad's dad, and his dad. Keep Maddy close. He was looking for poon.

QUOTE(RibbieRubarb @ Jun 2, 2006 -> 02:42 PM) But those were the best, damn-looking mice in the East Coast! Those weren't some s***tin' 2-star mice, right? We saw the 2 star ones also. The rickshaw ride from the hotel to the park was quite the experience. The park sucks. The bathrooms are vile. The food wasn't bad at the park, but I figured if a star resturant wasn't concerned about the mice.. Fenway surely wasn't either. :puke And if you ever have to pick up tickets via will call... good luck. Get there at least 2 hours before game time and expect to wait. And wait. And wait. They are the most un-organized park I have ever been to. And a lot of the fans were assholes.

QUOTE(henry wiggins @ Jun 2, 2006 -> 12:13 PM) Another feature of the race/class aspect of all this is that we city residents tend to get really annoyed when the stereotypes, generalizations, and canards are put about by people who don't live in the city and have not spent any real time in the areas that they say are so horrible. I'm a lifelong resident of the south side, and I can't begin to explain the context and background for some of this to people who grew up in or live now in suburbs or outside of the Chicago area. The race and class of those that live immediately south of the ball park and for anyone that's driven down 37th street can't be disputed. It's not a stereotype or a generalization. It is horrible. It is a fact.

QUOTE(JimH @ Jun 2, 2006 -> 12:39 PM) A few things to add on this discussion ... 1. I remember a media report, Sun Times I believe, in the mid 90's about bullet or pellet shots damaging some of the seats in the upper deck. There was speculation regarding the source. Some said it may have come from the Robert Taylor Homes and others said it may have been from people breaking into the ballpark and vandalizing. I don't know if it was ever proven one way or the other. 2. The Robert Taylor Homes were less than a mile from the new (and old) ballpark. Their addresses were on State St. and Federal St. roughly from 3800-4300 south. Some of the southernmost buildings would've been slightly more than a mile away, but most were 3/4 to one mile away. 3. I grew up in Bridgeport and never worried whatsoever about wandering north of the park. However I never went to 39th and Wentworth, 39th and Shields, etc. There was a currency exchange and liquor store there and it was rough ... really rough. 4. At old Comiskey it was not uncommon in the late 60's and early 70's for the security guys who came on duty to find drifters/homeless people sleeping in and under the stands. That is, if the stories of a couple of long time security guards who lived in Bridgeport were true. The old ballpark was fairly easy to get into, heck, my dad snuck into the 1947 Chicago Cardinals football championship game thru the back vendors gate. I remember driving with my mom to the McDonalds at 35th and Wabash around 1968 and we saw a couple of security guards and Chicago police escorting about 7-8 "bums" (as we used to call them) with their sleeping bags out of the front entrance of the ballpark at about 11:30 a.m. roughly. We presumed they'd slept in there and my mom mentioned she'd heard from people in the neighborhood it happened a lot. Ya got a link for that info Jim... :rolly

Expensive s*** hole. Not nice anywhere. Ate in a 4 star resturant and there were mice running around the dining room. Fenway sucks worse than Wrigley.

QUOTE(My Dixie Normus @ Jun 2, 2006 -> 12:00 PM) Broken into, sure. Not unlike any other construction site in the city. But there was round the clock security and I have have never heard of any beatings or stabbings. Please show me one credible source about the bullet holes. My eyes. And from the mouth of the under cover cops that work (and worked) there.
-
QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Jun 2, 2006 -> 11:30 AM) Just curious, was this all with the Old Comiskey, or even in the early 90s? It was worse at Old Comiskey because that place was easier to break in, and on a daily basis bullets were pulled from the cinder blocks along 35th street.
-
QUOTE(My Dixie Normus @ Jun 2, 2006 -> 11:24 AM) It is impossible from a ballistics perspective to hit and make a hole in 3/8" plastic from 1.25 miles away without some serious weapons. It never happened. Urban legend propigated by racists. THE RTH's (across the DR) and what's left of the section 8 homes (a block away) are not (were not) 1.25 miles away. I am not going to argue with you. It happened. Several times. The place was also broken into dozens of times, and several times there was evidence of violence (beatings, stabbings, etc) taking place IN the park over night.
-
QUOTE(My Dixie Normus @ Jun 2, 2006 -> 11:11 AM) That is factual incorrect. There were NEVER bullet holes in the seats in the upper deck. Whatever you say.

QUOTE(Hangar18 @ Jun 2, 2006 -> 10:30 AM) I went on a Marlins website, and one marlin fan asked the other why SOX fans were so jealous of Cub fans (stereotype propogated by the Tribune-now widely believed myth). Another Marlin fan said it was because SOX fans were "poor" and the area around Comiskey is "rundown" and "desolate" and nobody wants to hang around the park because its "dangerous". Wow, bridgeport is home of gangs and crack houses apparently. Of course the Trib wont hurry anytime soon to quash that stereotype. I told him in no uncertain terms that Bridgeport, TheNearSouthside and Pilsen have been the HOTTEST realestate markets in Chicago Metro for years .........that million dollar homes are just in the shadows of the park, and that the area is actually one of the "safer" ones (compared to wrigleyville). SoxFan1 will say Who Cares what the Trib says, but this is what happens when people start believing Stereotypes. These are all perceptions put out by your Chicago Tribune, in order to make their product look better. Its a clear conflict of interest. Soxfan1 willsay "who cares, its their paper why should they cover the SOX?" in 1981, when the Tribune shocked critics by announcing they were buying the Cubs, Critics said wont that cause a conflict of interest (reporting the news/sox) they said NO, we promise, we will provide unbiased coverage to both teams like we've always done. We see now that was a bunch of BS. Henry.. I read the posts on their board. Very different from what you portray here. You got the s*** ripped out of you. And in case you weren't aware, the area around Comiskey Park DID used to be filled with whores and crack corners. It WAS run down and dangerous. There WERE bullet holes in the UD seats and lights shot out on a REGULAR basis. Things have changed - though not to the tune of million dollar houses. But I wouldn't expect a fan of another team living in another state to know this. It wasn't because of the trib they think this about the neighborhood. It's because it was true. As for the comments on the fan base... you don't set a very good example so I'm not all that shocked when boards you visit think we are all nuts.

The housemates while away the time All pictures and videos With questions being asked about her parenting skills, and reports circulating that her husband has walked out on her, Britney Spears could definitely use a man about the house right now. So it is perhaps no surprise to find this newest staff member - a male nanny - on Miss Spears' payroll. The 24-year-old pop star has hired the male nanny, or "manny" as American showbusiness observers are calling him, to carry out such tasks as lugging around her eight-month-old baby Sean Preston, unload the shopping and wheeling the pram. He is also a trained bodyguard and more than capable of fending off Britney's ever-present following of photographers. In fact, the new recruit, who is named Perry, looks to have been drafted in to do all the things her husband Kevin Federline did before he reportedly flew the coup recently. Miss Spears took Perry on amid intense speculation over her ability to be a good mother. Two weeks ago she almost dropped Sean Preston on the pavement when she tripped up in platform shoes. Britney had been holding the baby in one hand - and a tumbler of drink in the other - when her flared jeans caught under her shoes making her stumble on a pavement in New York.

QUOTE(aboz56 @ Jun 1, 2006 -> 06:11 PM) With the new nose, Ashlee > Jessica. Yea but with her new lips, she looks like s***. Oh.. go Sox. What's the attendance in Cleveland tonight... and how many articles were praising the Tribe win last night.. -
QUOTE(Hangar18 @ Jun 1, 2006 -> 04:56 PM) Kind of. Except what Im saying is that they wont mention anything then. they'll just ignore this and do a feature on why AJ is the biggest "jerk" in baseball. The SOX selling out all of their season ticket base for the 1st time in their history, was quickly pushed by the wayside of the Trib talking about how thier team sold 600,000 tickets in one day. I still like ya Steff There have been plenty of articles on the Sox selling out Henry. You just continue to focus on the negative.

QUOTE(Hangar18 @ Jun 1, 2006 -> 04:48 PM) Ive got a better story, and I'll bet NOBODY here ever knew this has happened. I went to the Target near my house (on Roosevelt downtown). There was a giant kiosk of Cubjunk, tshirts, shorts etc, with 2 separate hanger kiosks with more cubcrap. Next to it, hidden behind it, was 1 hanger kiosk, and only about 7 Sox shirts. There was nowhere the amount/selection of SOX shirts, so I asked the MGR, hey why arent there more SOX shirts and displays, we did win the World Series after all. The Mgr LAUGHED and said I was like the 10th person looking for SOX stuff. He said they cant KEEP ENOUGH sox stuff on the shelves and said the whole kiosk was filled a couple times and soldout already so they moved the kiosk away. He said SOX stuff flying out the doors was unheard of and its selling great. I asked how did that compare to Cub junk. Said it didnt compare, even in 03, at another store, the stuff sold, but not like how SOX stuff is flying. He said he triples the amount of stuff available to them when they order. You would think that one of the lazy reporters here in this town of 5million people, 2 major newspaper dailies, might mention this very positive piece of news. It is great news .......... And look at that.. it's selling WITHOUT the Sox being in the paper as much as the Cubs... Kind of took a poop on your own theory right there Henry..

QUOTE(Hangar18 @ Jun 1, 2006 -> 04:41 PM) the Media used to have control over attendance at Sox park. For the 1,000,000,001 st time... You need help, kiddo. :banghead

QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jun 1, 2006 -> 04:24 PM) The Sox bags were all sold out. Sox stuff is a hot commodity right now. No one wants to go up to the counter with a Cubs bag. No one wants that shame and embarrassment. That is what she told me. The Friday Sox/Cubs game I had to go to 3 different Jewel stores to get a Sox balloon. They all told me the stuff was flying off the shelves. Thank God the Trib hasn't gotten into the minds and brainwashed the good folks of Plainfield...

QUOTE(Hangar18 @ Jun 1, 2006 -> 04:13 PM) Its "stating facts" about media coverage of the Chicago White Sox. You dont think coverage has anything to do with a team? Explain why 39,000 continue to fill that stadium up north, when theyve only had THREE 90win seasons? Cant be because theyre good. They stink. Its because their owners (and they control the rest of the media here because of how big they are) make sure to tell everyone how Great that park is, and how dangerous our park is. Simple as that. Well that and they have the dumbest fans in baseball. The Pittsburgh Pirates have probably one of the most "beautiful" parks in Baseball. What was todays attendance on a 85 degree day at PNC Park? 12,899. They have a more beautiful park, and are even WORSE than the northside team. Oh bulls***. If the media had that much control over attendance there would be NO ONE at Comiskey. And last time I checked... I write the check for my season tickets without help from a media outlet. Sox fans who aren't obsessed with the Cubs go for the product not the atmosphere. That's that. And the atmosphere around Wrigley is more lively - note I did NOT say better. The attendance was s*** in Pitts today because the fans have brains, unlike most of the Cub "fans". It's not about the coverage... it's about word of mouth. And if it's not then let them read and fill that s*** hole up all they want. I don't want their stupid asses at my "house".

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jun 1, 2006 -> 04:10 PM) SO does Old Style Beer. I would like some comparison's on that. And Jewel and Dominicks sell cubs and white sox bags of nuts, I wonder if the ratio of cubs to sox bags in the display is sqewed based on the attendance the previous week. ^ I hate to admit it.. but when I went into Jewel the other day I saw no bags with Sox on them and I complained..

QUOTE(rangercal @ Jun 1, 2006 -> 04:07 PM) it's not that we are obsessed with the cubs. The fans who live in or around the city are tired of being force fed cubs. Thats why they have such a huge fan base, the people who gave in to the force feedings from wgn, the tribune and the rest of the media. I understand all the regulars view on this situation, as it is a very tough one. You guys do not want soxtalk to be labled as a site that worries about the cubs more than the sox. I know that the hardest put down a sox fan can ever hear is, "you hate the cubs more than you love the sox". But the first thread was all fact based. I seen nothing wrong with it. If it were a thread titled "the cubs suck" for stupid reasons, then we have problems. OK. QUOTE(rangercal @ Jun 1, 2006 -> 04:07 PM) stop complaining, about me complaining ,about you guys complaining about henry. I'm not. I was defending your accusation of people attacking him. I don't give a s*** who complains about what, especially Henry. I've been listening to his mumbo jumbo so long I've conditioned my ears to only respond to him at Holiday Parties and other personal events we attend. Like I've said to Henry to his face... he's a sweet guy, and a real fan... but his obsession - maybe YOU aren't obsessed... but he IS - drives folks nuts. If he toned it down just a bit he wouldn't get the reaction he gets. But.. he loves it anyway so it doesn't matter..

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jun 1, 2006 -> 04:02 PM) Please god, let the sox win tonight, this board sucks right now. Thanks -Rock Oh stop your complaining...
