  1. QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Aug 14, 2009 -> 11:30 PM) Stoney can't come back soon enough Fully agreed. Huff is brutal.
  2. Hey look! We played for one run and only got one run. Joy!
  3. QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 14, 2009 -> 10:56 PM) In this situation I don't mind bunts, you get 2 runners in scoring position and your best hitter coming to the plate. I still mind them. We had two runners on and no outs with the top of the order coming up. It's silly to give away an out. To be fair, at least the bunt was successful. But still, I hate the move.
  4. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Aug 13, 2009 -> 07:10 PM) Way to contradict yourself. Yes, people have been using the bunt for many years yet it's the worst play in baseball and it's NEVER a good idea. I'm not a huge fan of bunting 1st and 3rd with no outs, but the claim above is just baseball stupidity. BTW, I remember this earlier in the summer: C Getz walked. G Beckham walked, C Getz to second. J Danks grounded into fielder's choice to pitcher, G Beckham out at second, C Getz to third. S Podsednik reached on bunt single to first, C Getz scored, J Danks to second. I don't see how I contradicted myself. I said that bunting is the right play in _some_ situations, but that situation isn't first and third and one out. I also said that the majority of situations when bunts are used (especially by Ozzie) are downright silly and end up hurting the team's run expectancy for that inning. You simply shouldn't be playing for just one run anytime before the 8th inning (which happens way more than it should). Also, citing one instance of a bunt working with runners on first and third doesn't really mean anything.
  5. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Aug 13, 2009 -> 06:49 PM) I am not commenting on last night's situation in particular. But, who the hell taught you the game of baseball? Someone who has a brain? I won't go so far as to say it's never a good idea (because there are some situations where it increases the odds of scoring one run, but that's only when you need just one run to take the lead/tie the game/etc.), but it's very rarely a good idea and is incredibly stupid in the majority of situations that it's used.
  6. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Aug 13, 2009 -> 03:54 PM) Is that true? If so, I had no idea. Also, I'm pretty sure Hawk said that the Mariners and White Sox are the two worst fielding teams in baseball. Did he actually say that, or am I making this up? The Mariners are a fantastic defensive team, and the fact that Hawk thinks that is hilarious. He's probably looking at fielding percentage, because I have major doubts that Hawk knows any real defensive metrics. As for this thread, I love defense. I absolutely hate watching the Sox in the field, given how awful we are defensively.
  7. Stone Pony is an awful nickname. I like Stoney the most, though.

  10. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Aug 4, 2009 -> 10:58 PM) Lets do an average of what that comes out to as wins-per-year. Then adjust for the kind of competition in Central vs. East. As I stated earlier, my goal is to be better than that. It would be good to be like one of those East teams. If yr perfectly happy being what we've been the last few yrs, then I would not expect you to agree. As far as the Balta list of pitchers, it's a good illustration of his point, yet it highlights all the mediocre names that Thome also is unable to get hits against. Found it shocking, and still believe in my point about wanting more cleanup hitter production. Again, I'm not saying JT off the team. Saying that based on what our payroll is, we need a different type of cleanup hitter. And I think we may have a solution in-house, as I've listed - but few seem to be fans of it. To those disagreeing with me, I again am not calling the current situation awful. But I do want better and I'll just hope to god we dont have pitchers adjusting their willingness to pitch to Thome in this home stretch. Thome gets on base nearly 40% of the time. That means almost 40% of the time, he's not making an out. That doesn't even mention his power, which is incredibly underrated around these parts. What more do you want? If you can improve on that, while not hurting the team financially or parting with plus prospects, then you're a genius.
  11. Just stop posting in this thread, Princess. Reading your posts is hurting, and it's just getting worse.
  12. Unfortunately, Joe Mauer will never be a Chicago White Sock.
  13. Today's 4 walks for Nix were an abberation, don't consider it something that will happen regularly. And he really does try to swing for the fences every time from what I've seen of him this season. He definitely tries to pull everything, regardless of where it's thrown.
  14. Home runs from Maicer Izturis and Juan Rivera have extended the Angels lead over the Twins to 10-4 in the 6th inning. And Twin fans continue to show their intelligence by throwing the ball back on the field. Hey, Kendry Morales just destroyed one of his own, making it 11-4 with 3 homers in the inning, including back-to-back shots from Morales and Rivera.
  15. QUOTE (CQMVP @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 07:58 PM) It's hard to get caught stealing when you NEVER attempt to steal, isn't it? Swisher is not a threat on the basepaths at all. He has pretty poor speed. He sucks not because of any stats you decide to pull out, but because the guy would rather walk than get a hit. That would be great if, once he walked, he could at least bother the pitcher or steal some bases, but he can't. He has 7 stolen bases in 15 attemps in FIVE YEARS of MLB play. He's basically a poor offensive version of Jim Thome, that can play corner OF and 1B. His power numbers aren't good enought to bump 90% of the corner OFs or 1Bs in the MLB out of their starting job. He's not an RBI guy because his BA with RISP is poor, and he'd rather walk than get a hit, as was already pointed out. He's afraid to swing the bat. So, he pretty much sucks, as he doesn't really have a role on a team whose starting 1B, RF, and LF put up good power numbers and RBIs. He makes a ton of money, and is probably one of the most overrated guys that I've ever seen wear the Sox uniform. He sucks, period, and I am SO glad he's not on this team anymore. Stats be damned. Watch the guy play for f***'s sake. I believe the point he's making is that Podsednik actually hurts the team on the basepaths because he doesn't steal at a high rate, meaning by not stealing, Swisher doesn't cost the team outs (and ultimately runs). I'd rather have Pods not steal when he's on, because he's only stealing bases at a 64% clip (a number that I don't think includes his multiple pickoffs this year), which really defeats the purpose of stealing in the first place. But yes, this goes back to the whole statistical people vs old school baseball guys. Personally, I like stats and people telling me their opinion of a player just from watching isn't going to change my mind if the numbers don't agree.
  16. After I said "that's nice", I said "WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"
  17. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 05:13 PM) This is why Danks doesn't go deep into games. And it is why he isn't as good as Gavin. Your man-love for Floyd is ridiculous.
  18. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 06:28 AM) keeping Danks' 5.2, 3 ER performance out of the picture, here are their lines since interleague began (according to B-R)... Gavin Floyd - 2.33 ERA, .538 OPSA John Danks - 3.45 ERA, .658 OPSA use any analogy you want to, but Floyd has been the FAR better pitcher since late May, even if Danks has been good. Point being, as of this moment right now, I want Floyd starting game motherf***ing 2 of the playoffs for me, if only to break Buehrle and Danks up. All 3 have proven their worth, and all 3 give me hope and reason as to why I believe the Sox will win the division this year. So we're opting for a sample size of ~13 games instead of 2 seasons worth? Floyd has certainly been on a tear since struggling at the start of the season, and right now I might start him over Danks. However, at the end of the season, I don't think I'd do that same thing as I'm of the opinion that Danks is a better pitcher (and the numbers over the past 2 seasons back that up).
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 11:56 PM) We might not have the best starter for a #1, but pretty much we have 2 #1 starters and 3 #2 guys. That blows away most of the AL. If we can get a consistant offense, and a defense that doesn't hurt us too bad, we have a chance. Jose Contreras is a #2 guy? Are we talking about the same Jose Contreras that is "37" and hasn't had an ERA below 4 since 2005 (which was also the last time he threw 200+ innings)? He's far from being a #2 guy, and is much closer to a #4 or 5, which is exactly what we need given the rest of the rotation. But let's not kid ourselves here.. he's not a #2.
  20. Here's a look at their numbers over the past two seasons: Danks: 308.1 IP (52 GS), 3.53 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 7.4 K/9, 2.9 BB/9, 2.57 K/BB, 0.8 HR/9, 130 ERA+ Floyd: 343.1 IP (55 GS), 3.93 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 6.8 K/9, 3.1 BB/9, 2.23 K/BB, 1.1 HR/9, 117 ERA+ So basically, Danks gives up slightly less walks while slightly striking out more batters and giving up less home runs, and ultimately less runs. Gavin has thrown more innings per start, but I think some of that has to do with Ozzie's handling of Danks given Gavin's extra few years of age.
  21. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 07:54 PM) Right now, if it was the playoffs and you had only two choices, I would want Gavin Floyd over Danks. But that's just me. Yes, it is.
