  1. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 01:40 PM) According to MLB network, Cabrera's fielding stats should improve significantly with Morneau at firstbase. I didn't know the first baseman had something to do with the shortstop's range shrinking with age.
  2. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 01:28 PM) Nick Punto has played 75 games this year and is hitting .208. If you don't think its an upgrade, I think you need your eyes examined. Punto also has the same OBP as Cabrera and has better defense. There's an obvious difference in slugging (100+ points this year), but Punto has been epically bad even by his standards in SLG this season (SLG is 70 points lower than his career average, 130 points lower than his last season). Going forward, I don't think there's a massive difference between the two, when you look at everything involved. Of course, if Punto continues this and finishes the year like he did in 2007, then OCab is an easy and obvious upgrade.
  3. QUOTE (Benchwarmerjim @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 01:23 PM) Apparently, when teh Twins were in Oakland the other week, Morneau and Mauer were chatting it up with O-Cab, saying they want him on the Twins...fwiw Im pretty 'meh' on the deal. his numbers are a duplicate of Brendan Harris Yep. This isn't really an upgrade, but at least it's a move that makes them look like they care (meaning it will likely make Mauer happy). OCab isn't particularly good (in fact he's been pretty bad this year), but he has the name and reputation to keep their golden boy happy.
  4. The amount of respect I have for the Twins is already pretty damn low, but if they were to do that.. well.. they'd be approaching Yankee levels.
  5. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 05:45 PM) Cowley just said that the Sox told Lillibridge he could go back to AAA. Shouldn't have gotten the call in the first place. That is, unless his .262/.342/.374 line in the hitter's park in Charlotte is a good indicator of major league success. He's certainly having himself a nice July (to the tune of .326/.414/.465), but after his .271 OBP in June he was bound to rebound and even it out a bit.
  6. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 12:00 AM) A small part of me hopes that O-Cab gets traded to the Twins just so we could see how far Joe Cowley's vendetta will go. Did anyone read some of his tweets about Swish during the game? Like this one? Swish is probably digging himself so much right now he doesn't know what to do. Maybe he could put more gel in his faux hawk.about 1 hour ago from txthttp://twitter.com/cst_sox Is this really necessary? Is this anything more then petty and vindictive? Cowley's been doing this s*** for years, and he's yet to be called on it. Not liking two players who had a difficult time here is perfectly logical. But continuing to harp on them even after they leave the team, offering nothing conducive to intelligent conversation is ridiculous for a guy who wants to be respected in his profession. As long as these sorts of shots don't creep into his writing, I have no issue with it. But if he starts turning himself from a beat writer into an opinion writer (such as some local columnists here), then my opinion of him will really begin to drop.
  7. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 10:56 PM) Why did you guys get rid of IRC anyways? The IRC server is still up, but Soxtalk apparently doesn't like superior chat services and isn't going to have the java IRC chat anymore. I'll still be idling in there and around during games I'm not missing due to work, so if anyone wants to chat free from java, just get a client and join up. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 10:55 PM) You won't be using chat then FWIW. That's a shame, but so be it.
  8. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Jul 30, 2009 -> 10:35 PM) Baseball's kinda weird in that somehow Floyd's stats pay for that. Not really. I mean, I guess Floyd's wins are going to be affected, but that's why you don't look at wins. It's a stupid stat to evaluate an individuals performance, and this is one of the obvious reasons why.
  9. BOOOOOOOOOOO I won't be using the chat until it's back to IRC.
  10. QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 02:43 PM) Dick...there's a stat in the Trib, which was posted earlier about Kotsay being the second best pinch hitter (active based on 50 PAs) right now. That has been a HUGE problem for the Sox this year. And Kotsay's defense at 1B is pretty good. Wise isn't good, but he tries. Fields isn't good and either isn't listening or isn't capable. Either way, as much as I like him...it's time for a change of scenery. Anderson had his chances, didn't listen to his coaches, partied a bit too much and over-all didn't back up his own crowing and therefore, I'd much rather have myself a Mark Kotsay and cash than a Michael Dubee and...well, Michael Dubee. Sample size.
  11. QUOTE (qwerty @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 03:28 PM) Optimizing your lineup. The Book is a good resource. I bought it a couple months back, and although I haven't gotten completely through it yet, I've found it very interesting thus far.
  12. I'll be at the Tuesday game. f*** the Twins and the Metrodome.
  13. Haren >>>>>> Floyd I'm all for this move if it doesn't cost one of the untouchable prospects in the system (such as Flowers), which I kind of doubt. The difference between him and Floyd is massive though, and Haren would be a fantastic upgrade to our rotation.
  14. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Jul 24, 2009 -> 03:42 AM) I feel pretty good about never really jumping on Wise like some have. Why? One play doesn't change anything, even given how amazing the play was.
  15. A look at the Phillies clubhouse as they were watching the game: Ignore me, I obviously didn't read the last page where it was posted twice
  16. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 10:42 PM) The replay has Wise just plain sprinting after the ball immediately. Like it was fate. What would Pods have done on the play? We know what many say BA woulda done; what about Pods? Sorry, but I'm confused about this. A player running after a fly ball is fate? Outfielders chase fly balls all the time.. it's their job. How is it fate? Don't get me wrong, I'm sure I come off sounding like DeWayne Wise kicked my (non-existant) kids or something. He made a fantastic catch, and he deserves all the credit in the world for it. It was a great read, a great jump and a great grab to keep control of it. But let's not be silly and pretend this changes his whole career or anything. It was a great play and I'm glad that I'm going to think of it when I see him now, but nothing has changed from yesterday. He's still a bad player, and he still shouldn't be in the majors.
  17. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 10:35 PM) I'm a bit suprised we're doing this here. I know what Wise did today was extraordinary, but it doesn't change much outside of today. I'm not being harsh, I'm being realistic. Anyone remember yesterday? Dewayne Wise wasn't very good at baseball yesterday… what about today? He made an incredible catch, I've given him his due, doesn't mean I have to give him my full unconditional support. I love this team, but their have been too many times when I have seen Wise have at-bats that have been to this teams detriment. I acknowledge that we all the reason in the world to be so damn proud of him today (and i am), but it won't change yesterday, and it won't change tomorrow. There’s no tabula rasa. Not for me anyway. Hey, get your logic out of here. One play OBVIOUSLY trumps a whole s***ty career.
  18. f***ing awesome. You still suck DeWayne, but that was a f***ing amazing catch to save it in the 9th.
  19. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 02:03 PM) What the hell? Who's apologizing for BA? Even he isn't apologizing for himself. God damn do I hate any topic having to do with Anderson and this is exactly why. I went a long time without clicking any thread about BA. I don't know why I bothered to read this thread, but I'm ashamed of myself for doing it.
  20. QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 02:00 PM) And still, the BA apologists remain resolute. Just trade him already KW, so we can get a semblance of realism back on this board! BA did nothing to earn the 4th OF role. No one is denying that. The point is that Wise has done even less than him, and yet he still is given the benefit of the doubt.
  21. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 01:44 PM) I still cant figure why people think its this huge insult that the Sox kept a guy thats a better PR, and had some clutch PH stats last year. And a postseason clutch moment as well. Because those "clutch" stats last year were complete luck, and not what you can expect. More times than not, good hitters are good in important situations. The same goes for bad hitters, they aren't miraculously good in important situations. Wise just happened to walk into a few last year and because of that, he's getting paid a major league salary to have a sub .600 OPS. It's sad, really.
  22. QUOTE (Felix @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 01:29 PM) DO NOT BUNT Thank you.
