Sox at Yankees August 30th game thread

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 30, 2009 -> 04:46 PM) If Garcia can be adequate the rest of the year, I have no objections to that option at all. Worst case, he's a couple month bridge to Hudson. Uh...worst case, he is starting a lot of games that he shouldn't be starting. Wouldn't be the first time. That said, he might be needed, especially at that price. -
QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Aug 30, 2009 -> 07:59 PM) OK, a caipirinha sidetrip was in order before getting to some beers, particularly after the sweep completed against our craptacular ball club. G&T mentioned using Leblon cachaça, which is what most bars around here are starting to use for their caipirinhas. I tend to like those a lot when made correctly, but since Pitu was the brand I was first exposed to and I like the flavor AND I can still get a liter for $17, that's the house brand for now. My caipirinha is only slightly tweaked from the Pitu label recipe, basically subing 2:1 simple syrup for granulated sugar. It's very often an acquired taste — the flavor of cachaca being very forward and earthy, and not like Martinique rhum agricole in that regard. But, the damn things are really addictive once you develop a taste for them. As refreshing as a good mojito can be, they can get too sweet, and caipirinhas are the perfect cure for that. Modified Pitu Caipirinha • 1/2 lime, cut into 4-6 pieces and muddled in mixing glass. • add 1.5 oz Pitu cachaca • add 0.5 oz 2:1 simple syrup • add crushed ice – Shake all ingredients and pour into serving glass with wedge lime for garish. – Drink and repeat as necessary until baseball season is over. All that looks good, but I don't even know what that stuff is. Must have been someone else.

YES just showed Tex's eyes when the ball was thrown. It was the same look Colon gives at a pig roast. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 30, 2009 -> 03:31 PM) Haven't we been told its nearly impossible to sweep a major league team even if you win the first 2 games of a 3 game series? Only for crappy teams. -
Cigar City has been getting a lot of hype lately. My brother lives in Tampa. Maybe, I should have him grab me some when I head to Orlando next weekend. I love me some brown ale and sweet stout.

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Aug 29, 2009 -> 04:12 PM) That is what I am worried about. I am in the process of applying to law schools right now. Hopefully in three years, the economy is better, but that worries me. Boo the LSAT, by the way. Taking for the first time in about a month. You shouldn't be affected. By then, a lot of this will have settled out and big firms will be back on track, which will trickle down to smaller firms. As much as it sucks for me (and most of my class) right now, in the next year or so, it will probably be the older attorneys who aren't bringing in enough money who get the axe and younger attorneys will be brought in. Good luck on the LSAT. It absolutely sucks, and has almost nothing to do with your ability to succeed in law school.

QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 29, 2009 -> 04:53 PM) What is Leffe Blanche considered? Do you mean blond? A blanche is generally a witbeir (white ale). A blonde is generally considered a "belgian ale." Sort of the catch all belgian style for those that don't fit anywhere else. I don't see a listing for Leffe Blanche, however.

Wow. Kay is ripping Jeter for the bunt. -
Soon enough more fall stuff will be out. Nice complex beers. Although, I'm really happy to have sat down and taste tested those wheats. Definitely feel like I've learned something. I'm heading to the beer garden soon. Wolff's Beer Garden is the best thing that has ever happened to Albany. Get me some pancakes and Celebrator.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 29, 2009 -> 11:47 AM) Why am I the only person who has trouble sleeping on hangovers? Because I feel just miserable right now. Came home at 6, wake up at 10 and can't go to bed. I have that problem. I usually get up and drink water and watch tv until i get tired again.

Michael Kay: "There's been a lot of pie at Yankee Stadium." Talking about the pie in the face tradition after a walk off win for the Yankees. -
I suspect I got into mine a little too early. Both were poured into wheat glasses and I drank both over a period of time to get a range of temperatures. Similarly, Allagash beat Witte for me too. The Allagash was surprising. For whatever reason, before putting the two side by side, I associated it with more fruitiness, but I realized that the flavors were essentially the same, but the Allagash was more pronounced. Much more orange, fuller palette, better head retention. As it warmed, the Allagash's bitterness became sweeter while the Witte went flat.

QUOTE (WilliamTell @ Aug 28, 2009 -> 07:59 PM) I'm looking to get involved in city and local government. I eventually want to be a City Administrator. I am having a TERRIBLE time finding a job, mainly because of the economy and the lack of experience. It's great not being able to get a job because of lack of experience, but no one will hire you to get experience. On the law side, I'm trying to do the same. Unfortunately now there are far more experienced attorneys out there willing to take entry level jobs, while 3rd year law students are in internships with the companies looking to hire. I decided to go back to school to get my LL.M. while I'm waiting for my Bar exam results. Hopefully I can get a clerkship in the meantime. I'm honestly at the point where I can't ever see myself getting a job. It's a bad feeling.

Don't know if I was supposed to but I've poured my beers. I'm surprised that the appearance is as similar as it is. I saw more orange in the draft version in Maine. Both with plenty of white head. The Allagash has both a fuller mouthfeel and is more bitter. I assume that's the orange mentioned earlier. The Witte is smoother, but watery. There's also a lemony finish.

QUOTE (WCSox @ Aug 28, 2009 -> 05:48 PM) I'd probably lean towards Carrasco at this point, with Jose in long-relief duty. The weather is supposed to be bad in NY. If there are delays, Carrasco might have to get some innings tonight.

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Aug 28, 2009 -> 05:37 PM) This will probably be his last start in a White Sox uniform. How many times have we heard that?
-
QUOTE (hogan873 @ Aug 17, 2009 -> 12:27 PM) Does anyone else reviews beers at ratebeer.com? can you explain to me what all the Orval talk is about? Does it ever end over there? I've been on that site for 2 years (I don't really post in the forums) and there has always been an orval thread.

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Aug 28, 2009 -> 03:48 PM) Alrighty then, it's on like Donkey Kong. Yep. I'm gonna have to tune up my skills to keep up.

QUOTE (SnB @ Aug 28, 2009 -> 03:20 PM) I ordered bell's amber last night because of this thread! ...it was good. that is all. That's awesome. Happy you liked it.

Alright, I've got my Allagash and Ommegang. I also picked up a Weinstephaner Dark. Can't wait to crack that.
-
I took a tour of Fenway, but never went to a game. There's a brewpub across from the stadium that pretty good. Also, Yawkey is filled with vendors (I believe) on game days which is probably where most people go.
-
QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Aug 28, 2009 -> 10:41 AM) I have a 750 each of Allagash White and Ommegang in the fridge for a witbier throwdown tonight. I'll pick up a 6-pack of Hoegarden as the benchmark and maybe also some Chambly or White Rascal, Great White, or anything else that catches my eye. If the wife is up for setting it up, I may go blind on the tasting. Go out and get 'yer beer! Your wife is a very understanding woman.

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Aug 27, 2009 -> 10:52 PM) Stone Brewing Company's 13th Anniversary Ale is REALLY REALLY REALLY GOOD! How's that for a beer review? 90+ IBU's, eh? That might be too much for me in large doses. I am heading to bottle shop today. Sam Adams has a dunkelweizen out which has received some decent reviews. Dark wheats are a favorite of mine so it might be worth a whirl. It feels like fall here anyway. I keep thinking its late September. BTW, your suggestion to have a wheat tasting is a good one. Would be a nice way to send out summer for us northerners. Of course I'll be in FL next weekend where it'll be nice and warm.
