  1. Minoso once got into some sort of minor trouble with the law, and he had to face a judge who happened to be my wife's grandfather. Some time later, Minoso actually sought out the judge from his trial, to handle the marriage of he and his wife. So my wife's grandfather "married" Minnie and his wife at the time. We have a signed Minnie baseball that came from that.
  2. QUOTE (LDF @ Mar 2, 2015 -> 04:29 PM) thanks for the update and i am now corrected in my thinking. that other player you mention, i don't anything about him. did he sign with anyone?? Choplick went back to school, didn't have to sign, wasn't a senior. Will be draft eligible again this year.
  3. QUOTE (LDF @ Mar 2, 2015 -> 04:09 PM) i will put a disclaimer here. i am looking at this from a draft nik point a view. so pls take this with a grain of salt. now, what kind of pissed me off, if Rodon and agent would have sign for the allotted money for the pick, the sox would have that money to spend on De Oca. the assign slot was + / - 5,700.00 and Rodon signed at 6,500,00. i think that was around that. so the question is what would it have taken for De Oca to sign?? De Oca was looking for 7 figures. Zero chance they could do that unless Rodon signed well under slot, which was never going to happen.
  4. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 2, 2015 -> 03:11 PM) The school and AD's office are two different things. You would hope their interests aren't aligned so much, and they aren't at a lot of schools, including sports schools. Yes, there is obviously a potential for conflict in either case, but the school should still have concerns of a rapist in the student body, just like they're concerned about underage drinking or theft or whatever else happens on campus that the AD's office is less likely to care about. And who cares about due process? The punishment and investigation would be based on violation of school conduct, something schools do all the time and train for all the time. The police are going to make it public by virtue of their investigation. Just like the AD or school. They have to call and talk to witnesses to verify the allegations. I'm saying they should be getting the victim's permission first, before doing so, unless some kind of punishment/charge can be brought without their participation (confession, other witnesses, video tape, etc.) I think it's incredibly s***ty for a victim to not only go through the act, but then be forced to have other people find out about it, even strangers, without her permission. Obviously if the victim wants to go forward, there should be no issues with the school blocking those allegations, trying to dissuade the victim from making a complaint, refusing to look into the matter further, etc. I stand by what I said. The chances of information going public are identical, probably even riskier at the school. And if the school (or AD at the school) does any real investigation, they'd also be putting the victim to task because you'd have to. So the risks are the same. Which means it comes down to, who should be investigating a crime? School or police? No contest in my eyes.
  5. QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Mar 2, 2015 -> 10:44 AM) [/b] Less so than an Erik Johnson, or any number of other players, though. EJ killed it in AAA (in 2013), while Davidson experienced a large drop-off (that no one seemed to notice - still don't). There's hope because the ceiling remains high, but (once again I'm feeling the need to remind) he has been in a 2 year decline. 141 wRC+ in 2012, 117 in 2013, which is league adjusted for PCL, but not park adjusted for Reno, which would undoubtedly make it more dramatic. http://www.fangraphs.com/qa/517/are-wrc-an...e-minor-leagues Last year, he was somewhere in the 70's or 80's (couldn't find in quick search), but not a huge amount more than he'd already dropped off from 2012 to 2013. Our braintrust was literally fooled by his successful cup of coffee with the DBacks. They're more than forgiven by this fan, looking at the overall ledger, but there seems to be a lot of denial surrounding MD on all sides. And of course, I would love to be dead wrong. I don't think anyone was fooled by his cup of coffee, since it wasn't a very good one. They misread more on his tools and potential for development, I think.
  6. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 2, 2015 -> 02:42 PM) Yeah and I don't agree with this, at all. I think you're (potentially) forcing women to go through something they might not want to. Taking it to the cops means more interviews and possible public testimony about it all. Some women might want to just keep it a secret and be done with it. Whether that's healthy or not I dunno, but it shouldn't be our decision to make. And leaving it up to the victim to participate doesn't just end her involvement. Cops are still going to investigate the event (i.e., talking to friends, family, anyone with knowledge), which again, might not be what the victim wants. In theory I like removing any doubt about what the school should be doing in that situation, since it will most likely lead to more cover ups. But I dunno. Getting the cops involved makes it all a public affair that seems unfair to the woman involved if she doesn't want it to go any further. I cannot understand any circumstance wherein allowing an athletic department to handle an investigation into potentially criminal acts makes any sense. It's a terrible idea. They aren't trained for it, their motives don't align with the victim (in fact run counter), they don't have the legal authority and they have the ability to block due process. Terrible. And taking it to the police doesn't make it public any more than someone taking it to the athletic department. It only becomes public if A) something is done about it, which could be either, or B) someone leaks something. Either way it could go public, in the same way, and in fact a police department will be LESS likely to have controls for that sort of leak than some athletic department.
  7. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 2, 2015 -> 02:06 PM) I don't think the school should get the police involved without the victims' ok first. But the school absolutely should be looking into it on their own and should be dolling out punishments as it sees fit. This is backwards. Laws in virtually every state were changed a few decades ago for domestic and sexual violence cases - the victim no longer needs be the complainant. Police (via the state) are allowed to represent them that way now. This was done to protect the victims who might be scared to press charges. If the coach was made aware of accusations, he should have escalated to the AD (which it sounds like he did), then the AD or him (pick your poison) should absolutely contact the police. Right away. If it is nothing, so be it - but that is not for a school's athletic department to decide, ever. Not sure of Coach K or the AD or someone between holds the responsibility here, but one or both should absolutely have gone to law enforcement.
  8. Like Rob did with second base, we now take a look at the 5-player field for backup catcher: Soto, Brantly, Kottaras, Nieto and Smith. Who does SoxTalk think wins the job? Probably more to the point, who is most likely if for some reason it isn't Soto?
  9. QUOTE (LDF @ Mar 2, 2015 -> 10:06 AM) fry, reetz..... wow. for me that is too close to pick. i like fry. i like what he has to bring. if i remember correctly he was injuried and i think he would have gone higher. what hurts the most is loosing de oca. i wanted him to sign so bad. oh well. De Oca was the emergency backup plan if Rodon didn't sign. They knew he wouldn't sign for the amount they'd have left after Rodon, but without Rodon, they may have been able to scrape together enough to get De Oca as a consolation prize. They also drafted a guy lower down named Adam Choplick. He wasn't nearly at that De Oca level, but the idea was that if they managed to get Rodon signed for something like slot, they'd have a little more money to play with to grab him. It's a complex game.
  10. QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Mar 1, 2015 -> 11:08 PM) I didn't realize that. I'll add them in. Cool. Here is the link to the channel, we've got 124 vids on there. Some of the recent ones aren't prospect videos (they are FS TV and SoxFest stuff), but virtually all of them before those are prospect vids. Looks like we've got video(s) at this point of: Tim Anderson Micah Johnson Courtney Hawkins Trey Michalczewski Chris Beck Jacob May Trayce Thompson Cleuluis Rondon Kevan Smith Keon Barnum Andy Wilkins Mike Recchia Kyle Hansen Jason Coats Myles Jaye Jared Mitchell JB Wendelken Joey DeMichele Keenyn Walker Nick Basto Kelvis Valerio Jarrett Casey Toby Thomas Nolan Earley Nelvin Fuentes Ryan Kussmaul Plus some guys now in the majors (i.e. Daniel Webb, Jake Petricka and others) or with other clubs (i.e Rangel Ravelo, Marcus Semien and others). All videos we took ourselves. Some are a little too short, but they're mostly from the last couple years so they are recent. Some we have a bunch of video on, others just 1 or 2. Fangraphs used some our videos in their latest White Sox Prospect list (the one from McDaniel).
  11. QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Mar 1, 2015 -> 06:14 PM) This is another playlist that I made that contains video of all White Sox prospects. This playlist contains video of players acquired by the draft and through international free agency. I will keep on adding to this playlist. This is great stuff, thanks! By the way, you could about double that by adding in videos from our YT channel. We've got video on many of those same ones, but also a few dozen more that you don't have there.
  12. There's a thread in PHT, and we tweeted it yesterday, but the Sox pool for 7/2 is $3.443M, 7th highest.
  13. QUOTE (asindc @ Feb 27, 2015 -> 11:57 AM) ? Welcome to SoxTalk.
  14. For all those wondering why Hahn wouldn't or couldn't trade the guy... he's now struggling to find a minor league deal.
  15. QUOTE (Douglas Rome @ Feb 27, 2015 -> 10:21 AM) my original thought got lost in the rhetoric, can a manager impose appearance code? The owner/boss wants some semblance of class befitting an elite member of society. It was many many years ago we were staying at the Drake hotel downtown and the Pistons were in town and staying there. Those guys looked and dressed like they took pride in their game and team and not like a bunch of slobs. If I was manager, as long as you had a uniform on, clean shaven, no jewelry, short hair GI cut preferred. When not in uniform you still had a code when in public. I know members here will say as long as they perform, they can look like clowns is okay, not the point. thanks, douglas No in-between? If they aren't "clean shaven, no jewelry, short hair GI cut preferred", then they look like clowns? It's baseball, not the military. It is entertainment.
  16. QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Feb 27, 2015 -> 09:00 AM) I hate shaving in the winter. Get a mirror for the shower, ideally one that hooks to the water feed to not fog up. Shave in the shower. You'll thank me later.
  17. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Feb 26, 2015 -> 02:05 PM) Thanks for this. If you ever read Larry on SSS I'm the exact same way on Micah. I don't see the hype and I guess I don't see why the hell the Sox do. I mean, WTF has he done other than put together 200 nice PA in high A ball? He hasn't even STAYED HEALTHY in for a full season yet. FFS, back the hype train up on this guy. The Sox can totally carry Sanchez' 240/280/330 if he's 10 runs above average at 2B, and I think he is. Micah won't hit much more than that and he might be -20 runs at 2B. Put him AAA, wtf is the rush. He may be in AAA. And while Larry doesn't like Micah a lot, I'm sure he is well aware of the org's liking him for the job.
  18. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Feb 26, 2015 -> 01:35 PM) I'm looking for the PRIMARY SOURCE on this Micah hype. Like, Rick Hahn saying "we think he's the 2B of the future". FFS someone, post it please and I will shut up about it. I'm so sick of the Micah hype, it's like officially a thing and I'm not sure how the hell it ever got to be a thing. Scott Merkin, the Sox MLB.com beat writer and a good barometer of how the team sees guys, wrote a full article in the fall predicated on the idea of him being the guy but Johnson not wanting to take if for granted. Bruce Levine (whom I dislike as a writer but he's close to the teams) specifically said that management sees him as the guy. Then there are the facts other have said - he was hinted as a September call-up last year, for example. It's been pretty obvious for a while they see him as the guy, either now or very soon.
  19. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Feb 26, 2015 -> 01:17 PM) No kidding. Repeat it enough and I guess it becomes a fact. I've seen NOTHING from the Sox that indicates they think Micah is anything other than a future utility guy. First, you have seen zero people around the game say he's a future utility guy. To be a utility guy you need to be able to defend multiple positions competently - he is having a hard time with one and hasn't played any others in his pro career. Second, if you listen to words from Rick Hahn himself, they hint strongly at him getting the starting gig. Also, read what the beat writers are saying - that isn't coming from nowhere, they are there on the ground getting a feel for things, and this is their impression too. Hawk too, and again, he has the pulse.
  20. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Feb 26, 2015 -> 12:33 PM) If Johnson wins the job, what happens to Sanchez? Do they keep him or try and move him? Almost assuredly keep him, at least for this year. I think the org has him above Saladino on the depth chart, and possibly (hopefully) Beckham too. Its a good problem to have. That said I think Sanchez probably makes the MLB bench of Johnson wins the 2B job.
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 26, 2015 -> 12:17 PM) Any chance they decide they can use Sanchez, Beckham, and Bonifcacio as their bench, basically declaring that they all will "figure out" how to play OF spots? Bonifacio already can do it. Therefore I think that may very well BE the bench (along with Soto or Brantly), if Johnson gets the 2B job. Sanchez and Beckham can play all the skill IF positions and Sanchez has enough speed to be a good PR, Bonifacio is the backup OF. That said, I don't think that's the best use of the skills at hand. If you only have three non-C bench spots open, I don't like the idea of having two of them play basically the same three positions. My personal preference would be to go with a bench of Sanchez (skill INF), Taylor (OF), and Bonifacio (all over). Gives you layers everywhere.
  22. I think the org is leaning towards Johnson. My big question with him is the defense. If he looks like he can field the position competently, then I'm Team Micah. And with his speed and range and athleticism, even if he makes the occasional boneheaded error, he can make up for some or all of that. But if Johnson looks like the glove needs more work or he just isn't able to get on base, then I'm good with Sanchez.
  23. QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Feb 23, 2015 -> 03:08 PM) If he were a year older, wouldnt his glove and diminishing youth make him an all-out candidate to make the team? Question for those who know him inside & out.........is the defense easily MLB 4th OF quality if (worst case scenario) that's all he ends up offering as a top tool Defensively, all indications are he's MLB-ready right now for all three positions. The issue isn't that he needs to be a year older - it's that his hit tool needs to translate into better contact/average numbers, particularly at AAA, before they feel like he has a chance offensively. The power is there, the speed, the defense... but he might also be Joe Borchard. This year will tell us a lot.
  24. Anyone here listen to it? It's been downloaded a few hundred times, I figure some of those most be SoxTalkers. Give us your feedback!
