My basic thought is, the Sox only sign 1 to 3 guys a year over 300k. That's 2 to 6 guys over two years, almost all 16 year olds, each with a less than 10% chance of ever making the majors. Moncada, on the other hand, is a proven talent. Basically, I don't care about the penalty. Blow by it if you want the guy. What it is MUCH more about in this case is the money. Is he worth, say, $40M in bonus PLUS a $40M penalty to be paid right away? Can the team even afford that? And what impact does that loss of money have on the rest of their plans? Forget the penalties in a case like this. Worry more about penalties if we are talking about one guy pushing it over by a million, then it may not be worth the loss as that one guy's value is much lower and the penalty prospect-wise is the same.

Will Siskel, one of our newest writers, wrote this analysis piece comparing two LHP prospects with a lot in common. They shared a tandem rotation slot last year, were drafted in the same round (one year apart), and both are among our Top 30 prospects. Will talked with both over email to get some information directly from them for the article.

NCAA basketball 2014-15 thread

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Feb 9, 2015 -> 05:07 PM) They have the @SFA win and the Wichita win so they got a few good one's. They don't have the ceiling of the last few Wichita State teams(or this years) as they're not as skilled but per usual they're really good defensively and Seth Tuttle is one of the better post players in the country. They're a top 15-20 team imo. Thanks, good to see a little more info on UNI. -
NCAA basketball 2014-15 thread

Rankings are strange to me. Kansas wins at home against #11 Iowa State, loses on the road to an unranked OSU team, and stays 8th. Iowa State loses on the road to #8 Kansas, wins big at home against Texas Tech, and drops from 11th to 14th. Not that it matters much, but it seems weird. Iowa State did what you'd expect and fell, Kansas had a less-than-expectations week and stayed put. Also, Northern Iowa - anyone actually watched them play yet? It doesn't seem like they've beaten much of anyone big yet, seems hard to believe they should be ranked that high. Then again I'm not sure they shouldn't either, just don't know what to make of them. -

Really like this addition for FS. Weekly web cast. Looks slick, and some people really like the video format more than the articles. Nice work again, Daniel!

QUOTE (LDF @ Feb 9, 2015 -> 09:13 AM) put it this way, if he was on anyone's radar, future sox people would have found him earlier. but either way, i like a new hidden prospect has emerge. While I appreciate the sentiment, there are certainly players who pop up that no one is expecting. It happens. Marin is a guy that has been on my "radar" for some time, but he never pushed himself up enough for me to look all that deeply. The new reports do make him bump up a bit on my mental list. Then again, I also have a much looser definition of "prospect" than most. To me, pretty much anyone in the system that is A) getting starting games/innings, and B) is not a ringer who is multiple years too old for level, qualifies as a prospect. Basically, anyone with a non-zero chance of making the majors.

BP's Top 101 list is out, just two White Sox: Anderson at 39, Rodon at 41. Probably the list I agree with least at this point.

QUOTE (LDF @ Feb 9, 2015 -> 08:55 AM) very good write up on all of them. i like it. an fyi, i agree with the ranking of Montas, in being #3. i love the faith in Adams. question, with all the recap and rethinking on Hawkins, are yous guys going to reanalysis your scouting rpt on him. i mean he is still only 21 and hitting AA, i still like to see how he does this yr. I'd imagine I'll revisit Hawkins in April or May, as this is sort of becoming an annual thing. I did a detailed write-up of him in April 2013 amid his enourmous struggles, then did an update in 2014. In both cases I made heavy use of video, so I need to see when I can find some video (or see him in person) in early 2015 in order to feel like I can make a meaningful update.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Feb 8, 2015 -> 11:46 PM) I don't remember ever hearing reports about Marin throwing in the mid 90's. Who knows...he might have made some delivery changes. I know he made some delivery and grip changes when he was indy ball. And he certainly did perform better on returning to the Sox system. But the mid-90's FB is news to me as well.

SSS posted the first half (1-5) of their Sox top 10. Not much in there different from what we said, but... look at what Larry says about Montas' knee issues. Does add some interesting color.

Callis "Rodon's pure stuff up there with Sale"

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Feb 6, 2015 -> 01:17 PM) Ronon! I'm glad someone got my joke. -
QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 6, 2015 -> 11:50 AM) There is not a single index fund offered. I definitely need answers, I'd love to manage myself as there are plans I am a fan of, but I do not know how employee match is affected if I move to Roth. Not a single index fund? I've never heard of a provider who didn't at least have a 500 index. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Feb 6, 2015 -> 11:57 AM) Post the funds they're offering here, and their cost basis'. That too, though I think you mean fees, not cost basis. Cost basis is how much you pay to purchase it, which in the case of Mutual Funds is either the clean price or dirty with fees up front. It's the fee level, and how/when it is charged, that are relevant here.

Are there 47 of them? Because that would be awesome. -
My equities portion (which is about 85% of my portfolio) is mostly index, but not entirely. You can use an SP500 for your large equities, and a Russell 2000 index for the small to medium side. But I also have a little money in each of EUR and APAC funds for global spread, and a div-heavy value fund as well.

Next Wave - Prospects who just missed the T30
NorthSideSox72 replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in FutureSox Board
QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Feb 5, 2015 -> 03:47 PM) Wow, yes I did mean Brett Austin. Austin Davis was a player by me who got drafted out of Illinois but never made it far. Sorry for that confusion. But yes, I think Brett Austin is an interesting name to keep an eye on. He started out really slow in Kanny, but did start coming around toward the end of the season. Also another name I just thought of, Zach Fish, OF from Oklahoma State. He struggled too in GF but was a decent pick and was pretty popular around here when the selection was made. Fish was one I eliminated at the last minute. I had other guys I almost put in there too, like Danny Hayes, Christian Stringer and Maiker Feliz. But I didn't want a giant list. I just added Austin to the article though, he really belongs in there. -

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Feb 5, 2015 -> 02:39 PM) No one really surprised me here. A couple names I am interested in though not on the list is C Zach Fisher, C Austin Davis, and SS Ryan Leonards. Do you know by chance what the organization thinks of these kids? I assume you mean Brett Austin, and dammit I should have included him. Never heard of Austin Davis. Fisher's odd. He's played all over, not just C. He was in GF for a year and hit poorly... returned (usually not a good sign to repeat GF as a college guy) and hit well, promoted to Kanny during season... then went to GF for a third year, and some more time with Kanny. Looks like in 2014 he was basically the victim of Williams nepotism. But the fact that he's been treated that way tells me the org doesn't see anything there. Leonards I know very little about, to be honest. -

Anyone people expected to see here and didn't? Anyone on there you didn't know about until now? I almost included Danny Hayes. -
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Feb 5, 2015 -> 12:37 PM) http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2015/02/05/fiv...d-with-measles/ I would sue the pants off the parents responsible for this if they're found. Might be tough to prove causation, but i'd still try. The day care / preschool my kids are/were in requires an annual certified form from a doctor that they have all vaccinations. And unlike a public school, they enforce it for all students except true medical reasons.

When was the last time you bought a pack of baseball cards?
NorthSideSox72 replied to Texsox's topic in SLaM
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 5, 2015 -> 12:36 PM) Good move, I bet those cards you sold aren't even worth $180 today. Sometimes I glance eBay to see what some of my best cards are worth, and it's very, very sad. It seems like sometime in the 90's the market just collapsed. -

Wait... are there still baseball card packs that have gum? I assume not, just curious. I remember exactly how that awful, stale thing looked, smelled and tasted from a pack of Topps. -

NorthSideSox72 replied to Texsox's topic in SLaM
I collected heavily until around high school graduation (1991). Sold all my cards but three before I went off to college, so I'd have some spending money. I think I got like $1800 for everything, which seemed like a huge windfall at the time. I kept: --A 1956 Mickey Mantle Topps card that I found on the ground in an alley --Carlton Fisk rookie card (was actually a three-rookie card, also had Cecil Cooper I think), which Fisk later signed --Billy Ripken F*** FACE error card Still have those three, in a box in my closet. -
There were a number of prospects who just missed our Top 30 list, that received votes or serious consideration from our writers. Yet others were discussed on SoxTalk as players to watch. For the third year in a row, we're publishing a pair of "Next Wave" articles, listing a handful of those marginal types. The position player article is now up, with 10 players. A number of players from these Next Wave articles the past couple years went from obscure to on-the-radar within a year of appearing, and some have made the majors. So in all likelihood, a few of the names in each article will probably get a lot more attention in the coming year.
