Sox Acquire Yency Almonte (as PTBNL in Gordon Beckham Trade)
NorthSideSox72 replied to Whisox05's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 4, 2015 -> 02:59 PM) When OFers convert, does their velocity tend to improve or does it pretty much start where it starts. Further fun on this, I recall a long time ago, watching a report on when someone decided to put Dave Winfield in a batting cage as a pitcher and see how hard he could throw. As I recall he was well over 100, closing in on 110, but of course couldn't throw strikes consistently. -

QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 4, 2015 -> 02:59 PM) When OFers convert, does their velocity tend to improve or does it pretty much start where it starts. Good question, and I don't know. On the one hand, having to isolate a delivery and command a pitch with a repeatable delivery probably slows things down... on the other hand, getting yourself into a proper delivery with better leverage and lower body usage probably helps increase it. Not sure which wins out. -

Quick report on Almonte - scouting info, video link, stats. -
Just please, please, please no friggin cheerleaders or the like. The stupid Chevy Crew thing is bad enough.

Who gives a fudge what political party they are in. This is party-agnostic ignorance and stupidity. Whether it's far-right paranoids or far-left snobs, it's equally idiotic. Seriously, for once, let's forget the party affiliation here because it isn't even relevant.

Good time to break this out again: Jeff makes the case for the White Sox signing Moncada.

Parker Frazier also playing in the series with DR's representative team. Not sure he's still Sox property though, he may be an FA still.

So IL's exemptions are medical necessity (which I think we're all OK with), or religious. To me, any objection based on religion or philosophy just doesn't fly when you choose to endanger the public health.

QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Feb 2, 2015 -> 01:00 PM) No, I'm not even talking about medical exemptions. There are exemptions for personal belief. http://www.ncsl.org/research/health/school...state-laws.aspx The pertinent ILCS section...

I haven't been to an NBA game in years... but I personally want LESS of the goofy crap between innings and before the game, other than the standard anthem, announcements, first pitches and opening video.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 2, 2015 -> 12:50 PM) Do most public schools not have rules about vaccinations? I know in Indiana, you can't enroll your kids if they aren't up to date on their shots. Even at the high school, they sent a bunch of kids home last year who they found hadn't gotten their shots they were supposed to have by a certain age once they missed a deadline. They wouldn't let them come back until they had all of their shots. Here's the policy from the elementary school my older kids is at: Physical Examination & Immunizations: Required before Kindergarten or upon first entry into an Illinois school, and upon entering 6th and 9th grades. The physical exam must be completed within one year prior to the first day of school and should be filed with the school nurse by July 30th. Required immunizations include diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, poliomyelitis, measles, rubella, mumps, hepatitis B and varicella. QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Feb 2, 2015 -> 12:52 PM) Some states have policies that allow a waiver. That's the part where I am unclear. They must have some allowance for waivers, because some kids do have real maladies that make SOME vaccinations dangerous. But I don't know what the waiver policy is. I'm tempted to email the school and ask.
-
This sort of idiocy combined with selfishness drives me nuts. I have no problem with keeping kids out of the schools my kids go to that are not properly vaccinated, unless they have an actual medical condition preventing it. Don't want to vaccinate your kids? OK, go pay for some obscure private school some distance away that will allow for that. Can't afford it? Guess you're in for some home-schooling. Not willing to do that work? Here comes the truancy officer. I know it's harsh and meanwhile some kids will be puppets to it, but in the long run, society is far better off.

Hm, maybe I'm underestimating. I always go with the lowest point of snow pack, but maybe that's not the best way to guess. I tried to google a local site for Northbrook, but the one I found said zero precipitation yesterday, LOL.
-
Haven't seen anything official, but we are certainly over a foot here in Northbrook. I'd guess 14-16" in the end, but hard to say for sure with the drifts. Older kid's school closed, younger kid's actually stayed open. Office open (because the markets are open) but I'm working from home, staying with the older one.

NCAA basketball 2014-15 thread
NorthSideSox72 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Sure would love it if Iowa State would play a complete game at some point. Even at home against TCU they were within single digits most of the game. They just can't seem to keep their foot on the gas for 40 minutes. I'm convinced they are able to match up well against just about any team in the country, but I'm not convinced they'd win a first round game as a 2 or 3 seed. -
QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 31, 2015 -> 08:21 PM) The really high strikeouts is very concerning. It was the reason I didn't think Joas Fields was going to make it. He still has time but it is going to be tough. I'm less concerned about the K rate (which was high but not monstrously so), and more concerned about the nearly complete lack of walks.

Hawkins is definitely a corner guy now. He's got plenty of arm for either, and his speed isn't elite but it's above average.

We put something new and pretty cool over in the FS forum just now - a whole new thing for us, courtesy of Quinarvy. Go check it out.

We are adding a whole new thing at FutureSox, thanks to our own Quinarvy. It's a weekly video blog series, covering various prospect-related topics. For its debut, we actually have two episodes. Here they are: 1: FSTV: SoxFest, interviews and more 2: FSTV: A look at some tough calls in our Top 30 Prospects This is new for us, so be gentle, but feedback is great. Also I'm on my phone so if another mod could embed those links thy would be great, lol.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jan 30, 2015 -> 10:05 AM) Rodon Anderson Adams Montas Johnson Davidson Michalczewski Danish Adolfo Hawkins Rondon Sanchez Beck Sanburn Thompson He said he can do it because he witnessed it with RISP. But he said when he isn't bearing down like that "he'll cut through fastballs up and chase breaking balls down until the sun swallows the earth." Davidson 6th? Seems very high to me, for him at this point.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 30, 2015 -> 09:46 AM) My thinking is that 6% isn't really bad. Think about it, mortgages are where now 4%? 3.5%? Those are asset backed securities. People getting mortgages have incomes. Secured loans - not asset backed securities. If those mortgages were then packaged into a REIT or swap or some sort of other instrument, then that is an MBS (a type of asset backed security). Nuance.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 30, 2015 -> 09:58 AM) The last time Keith Law thought a Sox pitcher was going to be a reliever, Chris Sale became one of the best pitchers in the league. Can't wait for Danish to do the same And to Law's credit, I recall him tweeting this past season (maybe during All Star Game? Can't recall) something like "told you Sale was a reliever". At least he can poke a little fun at himself.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jan 30, 2015 -> 09:49 AM) - Montas just missed his top 100. Said he'll either be a 220 inning beast, Aroldis Chapman or flame out due to lack of control and/or knee issues. - Micah Johnson will be a top 100 next year if he still qualifies. - Rondon is #11 and he rates his defense a true 80 - Adolfo is his sleeper, says he has a 70 arm and 60 raw power right now. 30+ HR potential down the line - Likes what Hahn has done with the system, best he's seen it since he's been rating them. - Still thinks Courtney Hawkins (#10) can turn it around if he stops trying to hit everything 500 feet - Believes Danish is probably going to end up in the bullpen due to his arm slot - Pretty positive article overall If he actually watched Hawkins (there is a lot of video), I think he'd know that in 2014, that was definitely not his problem. If anything he may have dialed it down too much in terms of bat speed. His issue is with pitch recognition and adjustment.

I'm a subscriber to BA and BP, but not Law/ESPN, so... if anyone happens to be able to see just the names/order of the T10, I'd appreciate it! No need to clip in anything beyond that, don't want to get into any trouble.
