The Official Thread for Joe Cowley and his Agenda.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 30, 2012 -> 03:19 PM) Quick look at his tweets. You all give me your opinions Joe: Flight delayed because of "Mandatory Crew Rest." God forbid anyone strains themselves handing out orange juice off a cart for an extra hour. Me: That can be construed as a joke. If a standup comic says that, it MAY draw a laugh. Offensive? Maybe. Fireable? Only in America. Give me a break. Joe: I'm more likely to see a Squatch before I see a hot flight attendant. Then again, I think the airlines are hiring Squatch's to do that job. Me: He thinks they are ugly flight attendants? Big deal. Again, this is like a stand-up comic's joke. Not funny, but fireable offense? Cmon. Joe: Chick pilot. Should I be OK with that or am I just a sexist caveman? Me: He said it can be construed that he's a sexist caveman. It's a joke, folks, albeit a bad one. Joe: @SloaneMartin And when you come back, hottie up that pic a bit more. You look like the Russian icy villain from a 70s Bond movie. XOXO. Me: That is the only one that's offensive. A simple apology, ala Limbaugh, should suffice. He could say he shouldn't have gotten personal with her in a 1-1 diaglogue. That's the only bad tweet and NOT FIREABLE. A simple apology should suffice to the person. Tell you what. You go on a business trip, and tweet that kind of thing in the twitter account that has your company's name on it (CST in this case). See how long you get to keep your job. -

QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 30, 2012 -> 03:12 PM) But he didn't say it to the woman. He tweeted it. He wasn't asking for a fight. Again, he said it, right there for millions to see - and said it in a way that allows him to escape her response... he's the one here who is a coward. -

QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 30, 2012 -> 03:08 PM) 1.) What do you mean hostile work environment? He was on a plane working. 2.) Yes but what I'm saying is he didn't tweet anything that would cause his firing or suspension. Calling flite attendants ugly and calling out the pilot for being a woman? He's a f***ing sportswriter. They travel ... a lot. They can fight back and call him an ugly motherf***er. It goes both ways. As a columnist he's part comedian. Bad humor, of course, but fireable. America has been pussified. Grow up America. You're joking. You have to be. Seriously, try saying s*** like that in your workplace, and see how that goes over. Its not about pussified, and everyone here but you and Marty realizes that its Joe who needs to grow up. And talk about being "pussified" - the guy can't say s*** like that to anyone in person of course, he's too afraid to, so he posts it via social media and he's gone before they know about it. Now that is "pussified". -

QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 30, 2012 -> 03:02 PM) If Cowley is suspended that is stupid. He's a f***ing sportswriter. Sportswriter's travel a lot and have opinions. People who dissent can call him out and put their opinion on twitter as well. He calls flite attendants ugly? Big f***ing deal. They can come back and say passengers who sleep with their mouths open like sportswriters are uglier. He rips the female flight attendant? Why can't somebody just come back and call him sexist and make their point? Why should he be fired for bad humor??? If he threatens somebody's life and MEANS IT ... fine. he did notthing really wrong but represent himself like a sexist jerk. Those he offended can blast back, but fire him??? Grow up world. And if you did that in your workplace, you'd be in trouble too. Welcome to reality. Yes, Twitter is part of his workplace, since he uses it for work. Again, welcome to reality, 21st century style. -
That is because he has awesomeness.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 29, 2012 -> 08:27 PM) How will they do in their next 10 consecutive games against Cleveland, then at DET and at CLE? The easy thing to do would be to predict 4-6 or 5-5, but with our road excellence carrying over from last year, I'll go with 6-4. Hadn't realized they had 10 in a row against their direct competitors until you pointed it out. I'd say at the end of this stretch will be a good point of evaluation for the team, with a quarter of the season or so under their belts, and lots of ALC games.

When was the last game Phegley didn't get a hit? Also, Cameron Bayne has walked significantly more than he's struck out, has a WHIP nearing 2.00... and somehow has a 2.70 ERA. Fun with unsustainable numbers.

Funny movie-Sox story that didn't actually show the Sox... One of the best movies I've seen set in Chicago, at actually getting people to SOUND like they are from Chicago, was Backdraft. Kurt Russell nailed his Chicago-guy role. How did he train for it? Went to a whole bunch of Sox games. He could be seen roaming Comiskey for a while before and during filming.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 27, 2012 -> 01:48 PM) It sounds like he probably never got healed up from this spring. I read a couple days ago, that he was saying this oblique strain isn't the side he was hurting with in ST - it is the other side. Could be related though.

QUOTE (forrestg @ Apr 27, 2012 -> 12:11 PM) Can phegley play any other position besides catcher which seems to be blocked ate major league level could they groom him for any other position? He seems to get hits when the rest of the team goes hitless. He's not necessarily blocked. AJ could very well be gone next year, or even during this year, and they may elect to split time between Flowers and Phegley and see who sticks, with the other backing up. Also, for catchers, keep an eye on Kevan Smith, but he's a lot further away from being ready.

The last two games for this team were both losses, but also each were a first for the season. The 14 inning affair was a game with a bunch of fundamental mistakes by the Sox - something that hadn't happened yet with this team. Last night was the first real blowout loss. So, how the team responds in these three remaining games is pretty key to seeing how a Robin-led Sox team will do.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 26, 2012 -> 06:32 PM) That would have been for cause. They wouldn't have owed him a thing. QUOTE (Pants Rowland @ Apr 26, 2012 -> 11:24 PM) Do tell what the cause is here. Answering a question honestly in an interview? It would be interesting to see where he breached the terms of his contract there. Whether or not it is "cause" is irrelevant. What is relevant is what his contract says, in regards to what circumstances the team could fire him without paying him the full contract. Who knows what that clause may contain.
-
Let's get back on track, and for Danks to start earning that contract. Still in a virtual tie for first, still some favorable pitching matchups in this series. GO YOU WHITE SOX!!! Can you hear me now?

Our village contracts to Veolia for garbage and recycling. Most of the fee is garbage, they add some very small amount for also doing recycling, like 2 dollars a month. For yard waste, we have to buy stickers, $2 a bag for up to like 50 pounds a bag.

QUOTE (danman31 @ Apr 26, 2012 -> 03:01 PM) Not expecting power is one thing, but saying they aren't hitting power because they're not trying to is an awfully convenient explanation. Kanny also has a team batting average of .248 so I don't know what you're seeing in terms of 'lots of hitters with averages up.' Looking at the players individually Ravelo and Pangilinan both hit for little power in the past. Smith's power is down and Buckner doesn't have an extra base hit yet, though he just got there. Walker's power is down from Great Falls, but he played in Kannapolis last year and really struggled so who knows there. There are plenty of possible explanations and certainly going from the hitter friendly Pioneer League to a pitchers' park in Kannapolis will play with the numbers. I just think your explanation was optimistic considering how many factors are involved and how little we actually know. I don't think it's something to worry about, but when specifically talking about Ravelo not hitting for power he has a history of doing it and it's nothing new. I certainly agree there are lots of possible explanations. Further, it could be more than one thing. And now that I look at the actual prospects, I was wrong about how many had power drops - many are actually doing better. Ravelo's SLG-AVG is actually higher than last year, by the way. Last year, it was .056, this year it is .149. Pangilinan's is up a little too. Walker already has 6 XBH in 68 AB, he had 3 in 162 AB last year at the same level. I was focusing on Ravelo, Smith and Pangilinan and their high averages and low power numbers, but really Smith is the only one with a big power drop, relatively.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Apr 26, 2012 -> 02:04 PM) I really hope Cowley writes a column about Viciedo soon. He just did. He's trying out the idea here first to get a feel for how it would go over. Sorry Marty, couldn't help myself.

QUOTE (danman31 @ Apr 26, 2012 -> 12:30 PM) Man, it takes some serious rose colored glasses to say that. Rose colored glasses? No, rose-colored glasses would be if I said I thought those players would keep up those batting averages. What I'm saying is, there is an obvious trend on that team - lots of hitters with averages up and slugging down from last year, relatively. Could be the ballpark, maybe, but I'm going with the likely scenario being it is the way they are currently going about hitting. Probably from coaching. Do you have another theory? Do you think it just happens to be that guys all became contact-first hitters due to other factors? Also, I'm surprised how few people seem to recognize this, especially people who (like you) are very knowledgeable on this stuff... very few hitters that are age-appropriate for that level hit for serious power. Certainly not home runs. Obviously, you want to see doubles numbers that are solid, as that is a good indicator of power potential. But this is Low A, and we're talking about younger guys. I don't expect a lot of power just yet.

These... QUOTE (MEANS @ Apr 26, 2012 -> 11:55 AM) just give up on everyone!!! threads like these are hilarious. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 26, 2012 -> 11:55 AM) we must have lost last night. Viciedo had adjustment periods at two levels in the minors as well. Give the man a chance. You can't develop young talent by giving them three weeks as a starter and then throwing in the towel. Total absurdity.

I remember doing this in here years ago, and really enjoyed it. However, that was on political topics. Any chance we can go with that? Honestly, a debate over pizza just doesn't involve much debate skills, it is entirely about taste.

Their Sawks at our Sox - 4.26.2012
NorthSideSox72 replied to tonyho7476's topic in 2012 Season in Review
I like the pitching matchups in this series. I also like that the Sox are coming off a game where they screwed up some basic stuff - something they hadn't yet done much under Ventura. My bet is they are much sharper this series. I predict the ChiSox take 3 of 4. -
QUOTE (danman31 @ Apr 26, 2012 -> 01:29 AM) Yeah, when you're on a 15-game hitting streak and hitting almost .400 you should be able to draw some walks. I'm still more worried about the power though. Patience can be learned. Power can come late as well, but he hasn't had an extra base hit in 7 games after a good start. Let's see how this goes. I'd hate to think he's just a slightly better version of Jon Gilmore. Take a look at the stats for Kanny's starting position players as a whole. Other than Mark Haddow, it is remarkable how many of them have relatively low SLG compared to their AVG and OBP. Kevan Smith, for example, is doing pretty much the same thing Ravelo is. So, is it that Kanny is just full of non-power guys? Looking at what some of their guys did last year, I'd say the answer is No. More likely, this is something they are teaching the team as a whole - contact first, power later. I wouldn't worry about it. Especially with Ravelo, who is still so young.

Shirek making the most of his opportunity with Charlotte. Named IL pitcher of the week. His stats so far in 4 starts: 24 IP, 20 H, 9 ER, 4 BB, 19 K. 3.38 ERA, 1.00 WHIP.

QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Apr 20, 2012 -> 12:09 PM) ...I wish Danks was pitching... Why? -
Looking at Rios over the years he played in CF, and even having watched him be less than stellar there last year, I'd prefer him in CF over De Aza. I wish they had gone with De Aza - Rios - Viciedo, instead of Viciedo - De Aza - Rios. But now that De Aza is there, hopefully he improves.

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Apr 19, 2012 -> 11:51 PM) Kenny Williams Jr. Who is batting leadoff in yesterday's game. Sad. Being a reliever seems to agree with Nevin Griffith.
