Official 2010-2011 NCAA Basketball Thread

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jan 26, 2011 -> 07:03 AM) You're going down tonight, PHF. Clones need to win the next couple games, both of which are very winnable, if they want to see the NIT. Schedule gets real tough after these next two. -
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 25, 2011 -> 08:27 PM) Clean Energy research = our Apollo project Eliminate oil company subsidies. Like. Definitely like, but Congress (mostly GOP in this case, but not entirely) loves oil. It makes all the sense in the world to take those oil subsidies away from the oil companies who are doing just fine thank you, and put it towards an actually future-oriented use. I just think the climate (so to speak) right now won't allow for it. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jan 26, 2011 -> 06:44 AM) Ahhh, the poodles are wagging their tails this morning. Haven't seen one single instance of that in here - care to point it out? I thought the speech was "meh" as Balta put it. Mostly platitudes and flowery prose, some goals that will be nearly impossible to achieve and with no information as to how to get there, and a few actual policy statements.

White Sox Off-Season Catch All Thread

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 25, 2011 -> 03:08 PM) And for what it's worth, Mark Kotsay has zero use to an American League team right now. Kotsay would be possibly useful if he could cover more than 1 position defensively. Even though he'd have an inadequate bat, he could be roster filler. With a DH slot and a 12 man bullpen, you have 4 bench players, at least 1 of whom needs to be a backup catcher. That means you have 3 backups to cover 7 spots. You pretty much need your other 3 backups to be utility guys able to cover more than 1 position. Even if they're not good at it, you need them to handle it in a pinch. If you carry a guy who is strictly a backup 1b, that means you have 1 backup OF and 1 backup IF. You might get a little bit better if you have guys you can shuffle around, or a DH who can also play the field, but a strict backup 1b who provides no value with the bat is a luxury that no AL team can afford. If his bat is good enough to get into the lineup on his own, even part of the time, ok, because you can shuffle him in and out of spots. If he can play several positions, even poorly, ok, because at least he's an extra backup OF if someone gets hurt. Kotsay was doing neither of those last year. He does not have any place on an American League roster. Ross Gload has filled a similar roll nicely for years now, being a backup 1B, occasional corner OF, PH and PR. But he's been in the NL, he can actually still run, and he's younger than Kotsay. -
Bears versus Packers game thread

Its amazing to me there is this much silliness over this situation. Cutler got hurt, the docs/coaches kept him out, it was a 2nd degree sprain (which is a tear) that would have some effect on his play (but we don't know precisely how much). Now you've got idiots out there in the twitterverse saying he's a p**** or whatever other moronic things come from small brains, and others saying that subjective topics are somehow "facts", blah blah blah. What's important here is that Cutler played like s*** the first half, and has consitently played like s*** against the Pack. That's the concern for next season. The rest of this is just noise that the entire Bears team now has to live down next season. -
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 25, 2011 -> 02:02 PM) Sure, they have a "reasonable" restriction. It'll be up to 9 people to decide whether pat downs are "reasonable." 8 years ago there's no way this would be successful. Now? I'm not so sure. And that's the way it sort of has to be. Situation changes, security needs change. I am more concerned about the fact that the searches and body scans are just not worth it, than about whether or not its an intrusion on someone's privacy.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jan 24, 2011 -> 04:24 PM) Found in Chesterfield, Missouri. Pretty cool. Mountain lion. I seem to recall, there used to be a small population of those in the Ozarks and Ouchita mountains, in souther MO, western AR and eastern OK. But suburban St Louis seems to be way outside that range.
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 25, 2011 -> 01:19 PM) I thought you were saying he couldn't maintain an unreasonable search/seizure action because flying isn't a right. But they still limit searches in the context of traffic stops/searches. Search and seizure actions related to traffic stops are restricted, as are flight security checks. The restrictions and checks are different. Since these are not rights but privileges, I think they have significant legal leeway to do what they see fit to ensure security.
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 25, 2011 -> 12:11 PM) So? Is driving a car a right? Nope. And there are many restrictions on that too, such as licensure, insurance, traffic laws, etc. What's your point?

Chico becomes the favorite if Rahm is out. I actually agree with the Appelate court on at least one point - that the voter exemption is not the same, and cannot be the same, as the candidate exemption. I truly think Rahm would be the most effective person to hold that office, among the field. Chico just won't be as good.
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 25, 2011 -> 09:09 AM) I hope he wins. Since flying is not a right, I fail to see how he can win this. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 25, 2011 -> 09:30 AM) I was not being facetious at all. I don't think there is anyway this could be prevented with a body scanner. No one has ever said they would - outside the secure area, which is where this happened.

I think its worth noting, for future years, how much better Hanie looked than Collins. Collins gets the benefit of real reps with the first team on a regular basis, and he looked completely lost out there, and honestly looked like he was in some sort of a haze. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 24, 2011 -> 01:14 PM) Explain that please! Yeah, I think Braun is more well-qualified... but she's also a dolt, and I'd much rather see Watkins run seriously, so I'd love to see more support for Watkins and for Braun to just go away.
-
QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 24, 2011 -> 01:02 PM) I mean, the thing that I find crazy about this is you guys are acting like rahm is getting in on a technicality but I feel like he is being kept out on a technicality. Regardless of whether i'd vote for him, which I wouldn't, this is a guy who was born and raised in chicago, represented a chicago us house district thru the 2000's and left to go work for the president of the united states. The vast majority of his life he's been in Chicago. Do we really think he doesn't know the issues about this town? You guys are acting like he lived in montana, bought a house here and then decided he should run for mayor. No I agree with you in this case - like I said, I have no problem with Rahm being on the ballot. But I also understand why the rule is there, and agree with it. But perhaps it could be written better, like, candidate must have had X years of continuous residence in the city at some point in their life.
-
QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 24, 2011 -> 12:49 PM) If someone was a really great mayor in somewhere else and then wants to take that management to another city, I don't see a problem with that. If I grew up in illinois and moved to a college for four years and then moved back I certainly never stopped considering myself a chicagoan. Unless they are not going to live there while they are mayor, I see no problem with it. I understand what you are saying, but being a mayor is just so highly localized in what it takes to be successful, that I would not want an outsider running. If they are from the area or have lived there for a significant time, maybe. But otherwise, I think that a lack of understanding of the city and circumstances would handcuff any mayoral candidate.
-
I actually agree with the residency requirements... but I disagree that Rahm hasn't met them. Seems to me he has.
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 24, 2011 -> 12:07 PM) WHOA! Holy Frijoles! Seriously was not expecting that. I believe this will now be appealed to the IL SC. Very interesting.
-
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jan 24, 2011 -> 12:01 PM) I agree, these companies, although profitable, are way overvalued. Their predicted P/E ratios have to be 50+, which is absurd valuation. Can't be a market bubble if they don't have stock, which they don't (yet). Groupon and Facebook can't cause a bubble when they aren't in the room. Furthermore, they are both in far better financial shape than a lot of the bubble causing companies were back in the Tech Wreck days of 1998-2000.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jan 24, 2011 -> 09:24 AM) Hm, I thought they came out well for at least the first week or two. Either way, it's still on the team to get the fans out there. I'm just going from experience being a season ticket holder, and selling off my extra tickets. Tickets after the Opening Series, up until late May, are usually a hard sell.
-
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jan 23, 2011 -> 02:51 PM) That's absurd. It's on the team to win early. The fans will show up at the beginning of the season no matter what, as they always do. If you want them to continue to come, you better win. Actually they really don't, other than Opening Day. In fact April games that are not OD are usually the worst attendance of the year.

QUOTE (danman31 @ Jan 22, 2011 -> 07:01 PM) Ha I saw your line of -14 on Rock M and think that's laughable. It's always entertaining with Mizzou. They might pull away late, but we haven't blown out real teams this year. Well... QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jan 23, 2011 -> 01:53 AM) LOL, Mizzou is such a bad matchup for us. Yeah, that sucked. The only good news is, that is the only time all season that ISU has been blown out. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 21, 2011 -> 05:42 PM) The White Sox have just put on sale single game tickets for a number of dates in April and May. I thought people here might be interested Wow, even includes Twins games, and some interleague games. This came out of nowhere.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 21, 2011 -> 04:47 PM) That's a solid rant. By "solid" do you mean pretty darn close to paranoid psychotic?
-
I just want to point out that 2 pages into this topic, and the next day after it was posted, I cannot find a single item anywhere on the web talking about this. Not one, other than here. Source?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 21, 2011 -> 04:26 PM) In that large post, I was trying to say that "Bringing in an outside group to try to audit the government or to deal with the deficit" is something we actually just tried, with the joke that was the deficit commission, and it wound up caring a lot more about upper class tax cuts than the deficit. Wrong people, wrong mission. They were not doing what I am describing, exactly.
