  1. The Sox system does indeed suck right now. But that doesn't change the fact that Law, as a pattern, has consistently talked Sox prospects down below where everyone else has them, and has taken every opportunity to bash, even when off topic. There is clearly a bias there.
  2. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jun 30, 2010 -> 03:30 PM) Justin Greene went 0-3, 2 Ks in his Birmingham debut. Welcome to AA!
  3. Win the game, win the series. 2-1 vs Royals @ KC is good enough.
  4. QUOTE (JorgeFabregas @ Jun 30, 2010 -> 10:40 AM) I think you might be better off looking at poverty as opposed to red/blue. I'd also wonder about urban vs. rural/suburban. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jun 30, 2010 -> 10:49 AM) Look at what they eat down south. This really isn't surprising to me at all. I'm actually surprised Texas isnt on the list since they deep fry pretty much everything haha Both of these. I lived in Tennessee for a few years, and my god are the diets there awful (on average). Also lived in CO, IA, IL. So I've seen some variety.
  5. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jun 30, 2010 -> 09:10 AM) I dont think so. Looks like Olivander, who is not played by Ian McKellen Without checking IMDB, that looks like John Hurt of Alien and Contact fame.
  6. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jun 30, 2010 -> 09:19 AM) Still, he's never been up with the Sox before and with his great minor league numbers perhaps a bit of an introduction is needed for those with less knowledge of the Sox minor league system. He's a guy who throws very hard, one of the few lefties in baseball who can match speed with Thornton. But he's had control issues and injuries. He's seen the majors for brief stints multiple times. Seems like maybe a good "project" for Coop, in the way that Thornton was. Lots of potential there, but a low probability of ultimate success.
  7. QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Jun 30, 2010 -> 10:13 AM) im just asking... not attacking. Mississippi weighed in for the sixth year in a row as the fattest state, with 33.8 percent of its adults obese, while Alabama and Tennessee tied for second (31.6 percent). The other top 10, also concentrated in the south, were West Virginia, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Arkansas, South Carolina and Michigan tying with North Carolina for 10th place (29.4 percent). So of the Top 10 most obese/fat states, 8 are deep red states with 1 deep blue and 1 in between. (NC) The healthiest states in terms of weight were congregated in the Northeast and West. Colorado (19.1 percent) came in first, followed by Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Massachusetts, Hawaii, Vermont, Rhode Island, Utah, Montana and New Jersey. The District of Columbia was the only region to experience a decline in obesity rates. So of the Top 10 healthiest states, 7 are deep blue with 2 deep red and 1 in between. (CO) Again is this a coincidence or is their a correlation between lifestyle and political affiliation? I'd say its coincidental, in that certain regions of the country have always tended to be fatter (the South), or healthier (the West and New England). It also happens to be, at present, that the red/blue lines up that way.
  8. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 30, 2010 -> 08:01 AM) for the white sox top 25, are you just gonna throw all the s*** to the wall and see who sticks where? Our farm system took a step up last year, but has taken a huge step back this year. We do a little more research than that. But certainly, after the first few names, there is going to be a LOT of variability, because there is a lack of depth in the system. There have also been some injuries: Mitchell out for the year, Shirek out for an unknown period, Trayce Thompson out for probably the year, Martinez just coming back from injury, Phegley's medical condition, Remenowsky just got hurt... all those guys were in one or more of the recent lists.
  9. Its Keith Law, you can't really take anything he says about the Sox without a huge pile of salt. By the way, watch for a new FutureSox Top 25 list in the next few weeks, we're starting the mid-season process up now (typically we do lists in late March after ST, July after major draft signings, and November after fall ball.
  10. Badger, thanks for the thoughtful write-up. In undergrad, I took two Con Law classes, and one of the papers I wrote covered 2A. Your feeling about the militia being equivalent to the state armed forces is both correct and incorrect, in my view. You are certainly correct that at the time it was written, the state militias were the control over federal power in at least an indirect sense. And I agree that is who they meant to protect. However, what you are seeing is that the current "militias" are actually the national guard, which is ultimately under federal control. Therefore, the PURPOSE of the militia is now served by the state government AND its people. It therefore only makes sense, in my view, that incorporation to the states and the people of 2A has to be protected.
  11. My road bike is a Trek Pilot 5.0, about 2 years old. Fully composite bike. I added TT bars and a Selle San Marco seat. I love that rig, and am a fan of Trek generally. That said, its not an entry level bike. If this is your first road bike, don't go overboard. No matter what road bike you get, I HIGHLY recommend you get a professional fitting on it after you buy it. Higher end shops will offer this for free if you buy a bike from them. They put you on the bike on a trainer, and tune all the variables for your body - seat height, neck and head set height, pedals and stays, etc. Absolutely worth it.
  12. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 29, 2010 -> 03:07 PM) The only buzzkill in this lineup is Kotsay/Beckham. Beckham has been looking better lately, that's not a buzzkill, that's a player I'm psyched to see play.
  13. QUOTE (Benchwarmerjim @ Jun 29, 2010 -> 12:11 PM) Thome had a 3B and a HR (opposite field no less!) last night. Digging around some stats after the triple, I found this interesting Thome- 571 HR/ 25 3B Harmon Killebrew -573 HR/ 24 3B When Thome was on this team, he was not the slowest guy, in terms of effective speed on the bases. Konerko was definitely slower, Crede was slower too in 2006-2007, and AJ might even be slower. Thome is big and not very fast, but he's not as incredibly slow as some people think.
  14. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jun 29, 2010 -> 01:47 PM) broken bone, non-displaced. No ligament damage. That's good news for him. He's done for the season, but sounds like he could come back next year. I don't get it. How do you break off the tip of your elbow pitching? Seems mechanically impossible. I actually broke off the tip of my elbow, in a mountain bike wreck. But the actual tip of the elbow doesn't hit against anything else in a pitching motion, except the tendon and sheath that pass nearby. A tendon wouldn't break a bone, right? The tendon would go first. Maybe ptatc can shed some light.
  15. QUOTE (flavum @ Jun 29, 2010 -> 01:59 PM) Infante to AA. Anyone think Bellamy could be moved up soon too? His numbers haven't been all that spectacular - I would have thought Bellamy, or Rem before he was injured, before Infante being promoted.
  16. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jun 29, 2010 -> 01:38 PM) Heh, Peavy for Zambrano. Phil Rogers, you're a f***ing moron. He really suggested that?
  17. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jun 29, 2010 -> 01:14 PM) I'm actually really excited about this. Jose has been out of baseball so long, I'm still skeptical he can make it back. But Greene's promotion was overdue and I'm excited to see what he can do at AA, where he is more age appropriate.
  18. MB giving up 3 ER in 6.1 IP wasn't the problem last night. If this team's bad nights are 3 runs given up, then the pitching staff is more than fine. We need a f***ing bat, to replace the failed Kotsay/Jones experiment.
  19. QUOTE (scenario @ Jun 29, 2010 -> 12:17 PM) I really wasn't trying to read too much into it... I was just pointing out that he was hitting better lately. May was a lousy month for him. June has been much better and closer to what he did in April. May K-rate (I am using K/AB here): 37.4% June K-rate: 30.8% So his K rate is down as well, and that's good, but 30% is still pretty high for anyone other than a huge power/OBP guy in AAA. Improvement is good though.
  20. QUOTE (scenario @ Jun 29, 2010 -> 10:12 AM) OK... whatever. He's gotten on base in 8 of his last 10 games. It appears he's making better contact. Just seems like something people should feel good about... Rather than look for yet another reason to pan him. Getting strong core results is a good sign, but how often a minor league hitter strikes out is a very good predictor of future success. And his K rate is just far too high. I'd like to see him bring it down a lot, and repeat AAA next year with that lower rate, before I get excited about him being a future starter in the majors.
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 29, 2010 -> 10:09 AM) Consumer confidence number declines sharply and surprisingly in June and the markets are cratering in response. There is an interesting dichotomy right now in market expectations. The recovery has still been pretty much the same - slow and steady. Consumers actually spent basically the same in May though as April, and April was the same as March, so no growth. And consumer confidence is going down. New home sales are plummeting, existing sales increasing slightly. The x-factor though, is business health. Analysts are looking for 2Q numbers to be ugly across the board, while the companies themselves are reporting expectations of the best quarter since the recession started. It will be interesting to see how the numbers shake out in July.
  22. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 28, 2010 -> 11:17 PM) Just watched Book of Eli...a little disappointed. Was a cool setting, well-done, I liked the idea of the plot, just...well, a little underwhelming at the end. Never really felt like it reached a crescendo or anything, and then it sort of just winds down. While I love Denzel, and Mila Kunis is hot, I needed something more out of this one. I actually was pleasantly surprised by that movie. Went in expecting nothing much though. I thought the twist near the end was nicely done, solid acting, well directed and produced, good dialogue.
  23. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 29, 2010 -> 08:02 AM) There was more to that than a broken arm. AS I recall, he had a cancerous tumor in his throwing arm, got it treated and healed, came back to baseball, and in I think his first game back, suffered a massive injury to the arm. I remember watching the pitch, he was facing Tim Raines. The tumor had come back without them knowing it, and that caused the muscles to break down in his arm. I think he actually, eventually, had to have the arm amputated. I'm sure someone could wiki me and correct anything I got wrong here. I was wrong about it being his first game back, but right on the rest. Cancer. surgery, recovery, rehab, played again, cancer, broken bone delivering a pitch, out of baseball, and eventually amputation.
  24. QUOTE (balfanman @ Jun 29, 2010 -> 08:05 AM) There are several minor leaguers who would be a better option to dh right now than what the major league club is currently offering, IMHO. I would be all for bringing up De Aza and DFA'ing Jiones. But if they aren't going to dh Viciedo I would doubt that they would bring anyone up to dh. De Aza may have value for this team eventually, as a 4th OF most likely. But you do not DFA Andruw Jones for Alejandro De Aza.
  25. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jun 29, 2010 -> 08:12 AM) Seriously, I have to step in here and bring some sanity back to the conversation. Do you *honestly* believe what you just said? Because that is so far from true it's not even funny. The fact you even wrote that/and or had that thought shows how biased you really are. Fox News is the ONLY right wing media on television. NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, the Chicago Tribune, NY times, Huff Post, Washington Post, Sun times are ALL liberal news organizations. For you to even pretend otherwise is ridiculous. Of that list, CNN is the closest to center as I've seen, but even they lean left. The radio is a bit closer, but even then, the right wing doesn't dominate. The only thing the right wing has is more popular/higher rated programs, but they have far fewer of such programs. Remove Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck from the radio and people would assume no conservatives existed on the radio waves anymore. The Trib is actually pretty much universally seen as right of center - I'm not sure how you put them on that list. The Sun Times is the liberal paper in town, always was. Trib at this point isn't very far right though, they might be basically in the middle.
