  1. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 17, 2010 -> 10:55 AM) I never expected him to do that. Really? Because it seemed to me that the right wing feared he'd do that and expected it, while the left HOPED he would do that and at least some of them expected it. Just look at the reactions out there from both wings.
  2. I'd just like to throw in here, that given Kagan has gotten such negative reaction from the far left and far right politically... Obama probably made a decent choice here. In fact I'm surprised he had the balls to nominate someone who wasn't obviously far left, which is what everyone expected him to do.
  3. QUOTE (NHDadUmp-RI @ May 17, 2010 -> 10:04 AM) Terry Doyle's been moved to the Dash. Any corresponding move(s)?
  4. Is Marquez finally "figuring it out?" Remenowsky's peripherals are getting back to what they were last year, he's got 31 K in 22 IP now, against 7 BB. Core results aren't as good though - 2.78 ERA and 1.15 WHIP are still good, but about a run worse than last year on the ERA, and thw WHIP is just slightly higher. I suppose it was highly unlikely he'd put up numbers just like last year again this year, since his 2009 was a bit ridiculous.
  5. QUOTE (SoxAce @ May 15, 2010 -> 12:11 AM) Greene with a 3-4 night (now up to .354-.448-.619-1.067 numbers) God the Barons are horrible. They are a young team, but just reading their box score most nights bores the hell out of me minus guys like Morel, Shirek (who was good again tonight) and Marrero. (Gallagher has disappointed me) I don't think Kevin Dubler has had 2 consecutive days with hits in his minor league career. Limited at-bats in May.. .417-.611-.583-1.194 Baby steps... Dubler is a backup, at this point the only way he gets a shot is if other players are moved around so that he can start somewhere. Shirek's peripherals weren't great, but in terms of core results, the guy has yet to pitch a bad game this year. His ERA more than a month into the season sits at 0.82.
  6. QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ May 13, 2010 -> 08:29 PM) Last 3 starts: 22 IP, 10 H, 0.82 ERA, 0.50 WHIP, 1 BB/ 35 SO Yeah. He's too good for Low-A. 35:1 K:BB = good.
  7. QUOTE (BamaDoc @ May 13, 2010 -> 04:12 PM) Sorry, I usually hate hypothetical trade rumors but I saw Texas mentioned on MLB trade rumors as having poor production at catcher. They have Saltalamacchia at triple A. What about AJ for Salt if we keep struggling? Would he be good to pair with Flowers as Salt is a switch hitter and if he is not up now maybe they have soured on him. Anyone know anything about him? Flowers is now sporting a .993 OPS and rising in AAA, and his defense has been improving in the past couple years. If you just want a backup for Flowers, why trade away AJ for something easily found elsewhere, or even within the organization?
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 13, 2010 -> 03:48 PM) Absolutely. And Stoney is about as good of a match as you can find for Hawk as well. (Of course, he's the best color man in baseball, so he's probably a good match for most people, but the ability to understand Hawk's obscure 1960's Red Sox lineup references helps a lot). Problem is, even when Hawk is at his best, Stoney and Hawk work poorly together because they are both color guys. Neither are good at PBP. My hope is that Hawk retires after this year, and they bring in a good PBP guy to go with Stone.
  9. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 11, 2010 -> 04:54 PM) If it does come down to us being sellers...I think we target low a-ball, recent draftee kinds of guys. High risk, high reward, but if they're far enough away from the big leagues, there's probably legitimate value to be stolen from teams. Problem with that is, that leaves some holes - assuming you are a seller, and if PK goes away after this season, you have a serious problem at 1B/DH. Need bats. That's why I wanted Kila, but it looks like he's not going to be available. I agree with your approach on pitching, and certain positions where we have guys solid for a few years (like 2B, SS and CF), and positions where we have good prospects close to ready (3B, C). But some positions (1B, DH, maybe OF), we will need guys in the very short term.
  10. QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ May 13, 2010 -> 03:05 PM) I would feel much better if it came out that he is in fact injured and he doesn't just suck... I honestly don't think its either, I think its very much mental. Might help him if he just decided, for a few games, to forget all the tweaking that he or Walker are doing, forget the expectations, just go up there and do what he does naturally. Easier said than done of course, but I think that's what ultimately gets him out of this.
  11. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ May 13, 2010 -> 02:44 PM) The story I heard was that Hawk also turned around and told other people (even making Wimpy out to be the butt of jokes). Well that's s***ty.
  12. QUOTE (fathom @ May 13, 2010 -> 10:38 AM) With Sox prospects, you honestly never know. That's why I keep saying we need to get rid of Walker so that hopefully we can find someone who helps our young players make the adjustments necessary to succeed after the rest of baseball adjusts to them. I never thought Carlos Quentin would flop as much as he has since his magical season 2 years ago either, but right now, I'd rather have Chris Carter than him. Remove the word "Sox" from your first sentence - this is the nature of all prospects.
  13. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ May 13, 2010 -> 09:14 AM) It just goes to show you defense is never a priority in this organization. They try to churn out as many DH/1B as possible. As I said when you did this in the Cubs thread too, you need to look around at the current Sox team. You have one serious defensive liability (Teahen), one below average defender (TCQ), and then the rest of the squad I'd say is average or better. And if Jones is on the corner instead of TCQ, it gets better. Further, this team has rarely churned out 1B/DH types - how many have come out of the minors? That's just nonsensical.
  14. QUOTE (ChWRoCk2 @ May 13, 2010 -> 09:47 AM) So imo, since both the sequel for Transformers and Iron Man bombed, which did you like better of the two? Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen or Iron Man 2 I can't decide, probably lean towards Transformers. That second Transformers movie was one of the most atrociously bad films I've ever seen. I haven't seen the new Iron Man yet, but I have a hard time believing it could possibly be that bad.
  15. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 13, 2010 -> 09:14 AM) I know what happened to Wimpy, but I don't remember anything about Hawk's reaction to it? I don't even know what happened to him. I just thought those two didn't get along - what's the story?
  16. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ May 13, 2010 -> 09:25 AM) The perfect White Sox. Except on the current White Sox squad, only Teahen is a true defensive liability. TCQ, when he is actually on the field, is below average. The rest are average or better. So not really.
  17. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ May 13, 2010 -> 09:30 AM) Wow! I believe if your major deficiency is defensive to begin with, all of the instruction in the world will not change that at the minor league level. This is just not the case. Joe Crede made a lot of errors in his minor league career, and Robin Ventura did the same, as I recall. They both developed into elite defenders. Dude is 20 with loads of talent, so he has a very good chance of improving defensively. Defenders aren't "born".
  18. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 13, 2010 -> 09:05 AM) You're pretending the stated reasons for the "carry your papers" law were true, and it wasn't just designed to harass anyone who isn't white. That's why it's unbelievable to you. Its not that I actually think that the law's only reasons for existence were valid - I am fully aware that both of these laws are motivated in part by plain old racism and hatred. IN PART, notice I said.
  19. QUOTE (mr_genius @ May 13, 2010 -> 09:32 AM) [/b] tax money won't go towards ones that advocate overthrowing the government or promote hatred of other races. a non issue being sensationalized. these type of racial hatred classes shouldn't be tax funded, that is for sure. Oh I agree, but as you say, they can't be anyway. The law achieves nothing in any real sense, other than to enflame certain people.
  20. QUOTE (mr_genius @ May 13, 2010 -> 09:34 AM) i keep thinking gold will be, but it keeps going up. lots of fear among those with money right now, and that means gold stays up. But, as the economy continues to improve, as a double dip seems so much less likely now, and as inflation and interest rates begin to rise (which they will, soon), that money will start flowing back into the equity markets. That's when the bottom will drop out on gold.
  21. So now the AZ legislature, and Gov Brewer, have signed off on a bill banning ethnic studies classes in the state. But, the law specifically only does so in response to classes that encourage sedition or the derision of specific racial groups. Basically, they passed an law that can only be enforced by the subjective criteria of when some group of people feels threatend by the teachings in a class. WTF is wrong with these people? I mean, I don't really like the idea of ethno-centric teaching in primary/secondary school either, but this is just ridiclous. Seriously, the level of hate - and yes, its hate - in this country is appalling to me. If some class is being taught that is promoting violence or bad conduct towards a group of people, then they already have the authority to end that anyway. This law achieves nothing in the objective sense, and yet causes EXACTLY the cultural tension they are supposedly interested in rooting out. Unbelieveable.
  22. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 13, 2010 -> 07:48 AM) I heard it was the 21st century Dances with Wolves, not Star Wars Or the Tom Cruise Samurai movie. Or Pocahontas. The story line wasn't exactly original, and the dialogue wasn't exactly innovative.
  23. Greene and Short both have OPS's over 1. Short's .400+ AVG is amazing at this point, and Greene's OBP is an absurd .452. And from what I can tell, both can play some D. Greene is old for his level and needs to be in AA, Short needs to improve his batting eye a bit and draw some walks. But I'm still pretty psyched for both of them, neither of which I gave a lot of thought to coming into the season.
  24. QUOTE (Heads22 @ May 12, 2010 -> 02:23 PM) Wow, Sergio throws it with some stink up there. And he's throwing strikes, against very good hitters. Love it.
  25. Looking at the box score, and there are 4 players among the Sox starting 9 with sub-.200 batting averages. Further, only three players are above .226, 2 above .252. Yuck. That is awful for mid-May, but I suppose it means we're likely to see some nice comebacks from the offense soon. Pierre at .252? I didn't notice how much he'd improved that lately.
