QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jun 22, 2009 -> 01:12 PM) Easier to explain it away that way, isn't it? No. The easy path in these sorts of discussions is going to the extremes, creating straw men, and screaming bloody murder when no one else was doing so. Its the destruction of any sort of useful conversation, and its the cop-out method.

QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Jun 22, 2009 -> 01:11 PM) All you are doing is changing the name from Blue Cross Blue Shield to Government. Because I can tell you that the same life or death decisions will be made by the government. This is true. To the extent insurers do now, the government takes over that part. But I'd argue there are both good and bad sides to that being the case.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jun 22, 2009 -> 01:10 PM) Yes, because the streets are littered with dead bodies of the people that insurance companies like Blue Cross refuse to care for... I mean, they couldn't be in a hospital receiving care when on their death beds or anything, because then they'd be in the hospital -- but since they aren't they must be dying on the streets! No, it doesn't work that way, literally or in any other way. Sure it does, despite your ridiculous example that no one was claiming (except the straw man you built). Insurance companies decide coverage or not many thousands of times a day, including people with serious illnesses. And if people can't pay the ridiculously large bills themselves, nor can they just switch providers when they are diagnosed with somethign like that... then some are just plain screwed. Now, if you are OK with that, then have the guts to say so. But to say it doesn't work that way is just patently false.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Jun 22, 2009 -> 11:49 AM) i wanted it to be because of lord of the rings... OK... It was totally because of LOTR. I'm sure if I moved there I could find me some orcs.
-
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jun 22, 2009 -> 01:07 PM) Yes, because that's how it works. In part it does.
-
QUOTE (Reddy @ Jun 22, 2009 -> 11:38 AM) this is because of Lord of the Rings isn't it? No, its because I spent a couple weeks there, and despite the fact that I've been to something like 20 foreign countries, that was the only one I really found myself saying "I could live here and be happy". Ireland comes close, though.

This team, missing its starting LF and best hitter last year, missing its DH who is a major producer, and missing their starting RF at the end... managed a 5-3 record on this road trip. Not bad.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 22, 2009 -> 09:25 AM) Who are all of these currently underutilized health care professionals, and what are they doing now? I don't think there are any, or not many. Is your point that you don't currently have staffing for that sort of rebalancing? I think that's obvious, as is the case most of the time when you rebalance a company or industry to change personnel focus. You lose some of one type of personnel through attrition or whatever, and you open up new jobs elsewhere.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jun 22, 2009 -> 08:36 AM) You just want one of these dont you? Maybe I already have some Maori tattoos. I always wanted to look like Mike Tyson.

QUOTE (Markbilliards @ Jun 19, 2009 -> 03:32 PM) Are you a cop? I've been testing for years, but these days it doesn't appear that anyone is hiring. Former. When the economy is bad, its a lot harder to get into departments. You'll show up for a test for some suburb that might hire 2 or 3 guys off a 2 year list, and there will be 200 people there. The way most departments in the Chicago area work, they test every two years regardless of need, create a 2 year hiring list, and make their way down the list as they need people.

Albuquerque or Santa Fe, NM Possibly Denver area Possibly Oregon If I had to move overseas... New Zealand, no contest.

Garrett Johnson, after starting the season strong as a 20 year old, has been in utter meltdown lately.

QUOTE (scenario @ Jun 20, 2009 -> 10:30 AM) Saw this interesting note in the mlb.com story about the game... What was the difference on Friday? Maxwell said he found a new pitch before the game. "I started throwing a new pitch, a cutter," he explained. "The last game, I was coming off my fastball and cutting it a little, and I started working on it in my last bullpen. It started to become a really good pitch for me." Maxwell, throwing the cut fastball in the mid-80s, also featured his usual off-speed pitches. "I was getting guys to swing early in the count," said Maxwell, who induced eight fly balls and eight grounders. "But that cutter was how I got all my ground balls." Chances are the cutter will be sticking around for the rest of the season. "Everybody was asking about it and I said, 'Hey, I just learned that the other day." This is interesting, because he was getting hammered most of this year. He had in fact been removed from the starting rotation at one point.

I just wanted to point out one thing I do like about the health care reform bill in its current form. They are putting a stop to the habit of insurance companies to deny or delays coverage for pre-existing conditions. That I like.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 19, 2009 -> 01:24 PM) It's sarcasm...if you're unloading Dye and Dotel, you're obviously going into a rebuilding period. Thus, why would you want a veteran 4th outfielder? I was 50/50 on the sarcasm, someone suggested Dye going out earlier. I still think, if we're serious about this year, Dotel for Reed Johnson plus the right type of prospect is something worth pursuing, as I think Johnson would be better than Anderson. Obviously I'd prefer we got a more serious impact OF, but that may not be possible, and would of course cost more.

QUOTE (shipps @ Jun 19, 2009 -> 02:01 PM) Any city that I have been to in California I have loved. I have been to all the major citys there (I think). So I would love to either live anywhere in SO Cal. or the San Fran area. I have thought about trying to get on the police force in San Diego. If you want to talk shop on becoming a cop, let me know.
-
QUOTE (shipps @ Jun 19, 2009 -> 01:48 PM) I have lived in Chicago all my life and never really traveled anywhere until I was about 23. I have fallen in love with California and I really feel like that is where I should be living. I havent had the balls to move forward with it but I really feel inside of my shipp that I will be happy living there more than Chicago. Do you guys think that maybe I am just seeing California to be a better place just because I have had good experiences when I go to visit? Maybe I am glorifying it in my head to be a place that is far better than it actually is. I dont know but I become obsessed with moving there sometimes. two thoughts... 1. If you want to live somewhere, not visit, then think through the types of things you do when you aren't travelling... what area your job is in, what activities you like, etc., and then take a look at the place. Its not the same when there on vacation. 2. Cali has a lot of great places, but its like a small country - the cities can have vastly different cultures and what not. So where in Cali are you thinking?

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 19, 2009 -> 12:38 PM) Can we get Reed Johnson thrown in to the Dye/Dotel for Dickerson trade? I suggested something very much like this but without Dye, Dotel for Johnson plus maybe a prospect, and got blasted. You want to throw Dye in there too?

2 of 3 here and I call it a solid road trip. -
Too bad for Torres losing the chance to continue that perfect game. Kroeger is on fire in June: .419/.457/.698/1.154 And we get Dewayne frickin Wise.

QUOTE (joesaiditstrue @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 04:02 PM) this new over-conservative soxtalk is for the birds Have you read this thread at all?
-
QUOTE (WCSox @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 03:58 PM) He's been getting hard lately. Given that he admitted his shoulder may not ever be 100% again, I'm not feeling too good about him being under contract for two more years. Uggh... um... Seriously though, this thread will be ugly.
-
QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 03:52 PM) are you kidding? Because it's really not, worse case scenario is they're 4 out after tonight. They lost a bad game, it happens He's said it multiple times now, he's just angry. So am I. But the season is far from over. And I've decided that while Ozzie should have taken out Linebrink, certainly after Lee's HR, I put most of the blame on Getz and particularly Linebrink.
-
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 03:27 PM) Where the hell is Thornoton? While I agree, its not like Linebrink has had a terrible game - he gave up one hit, one out, and one should-be-out. Check that, now a K too.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 18, 2009 -> 03:24 PM) Glad a couple of my boys are having games....Getzy/Becks/Floyd. Getz is swining great now, but he's made two errors today. Not like him.
