Official Opening Day Post Game Thread

QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Apr 7, 2009 -> 05:58 PM) Glad you enjoyed it. Did Buehrle look hurt or just plain out of it? More out of it, unfocused. His velocity was typical Buehrle, so I doubt its an injury. His fielding was good too. Just he couldn't locate, and he wasn't as quick to deliver as usual - did a lot more wandering and pausing. Like he had no rhythm. -
QUOTE (JPN366 @ Apr 7, 2009 -> 05:55 PM) Looks like NRI pitchers Brad Salmon and Ryan Z. Braun got cut. Doesn't appear that Ryan O'Malley was retained either. Knights roster Who is going to play shortstop? Also, its a real shame that guys like Owens and Restovich are keeping David Cook in B-Ham.

Official Opening Day Post Game Thread

Got back from the game. Awesome. For those who didn't get to really watch it, some things the box score didn't tell you... --Wise's strike outs weren't just strike outs - they were absolutely pathetic at bats. --Wise's bunt attempts were just plain stupid - the 3B was at the pitcher's level, and Wise was STILL trying to push, instead of dragging down the empty first base line. --The play Fields made at third to peg at home was outstanding --Chris Getz can play a very good 2B, it would seem, and he NEVER slowed down on that single-he-hustled-into-a-double. --WTF is up with the baserunning? Three horrible running decisions made on the basepaths. Not just being aggresive, but being outright stupid. They weren't even close plays. --Jenks had good velocity - 95-96 on the park gun - even though its just Opening Day. --Buehrle was not himself - not just in the results, but his motion and demeanor didn't look right. --F-18's are loud. --Gate 5 looks decent but incomplete. --The new out of town scoreboard needs some work, and had errors and bad data pretty regularly. FUN GAME THOUGH!!! -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 7, 2009 -> 09:59 AM) The Trib needs to get their guys on Twitter, like yesterday. I poked them today about our little project. No word back yet.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 7, 2009 -> 10:07 AM) Anyone want to tell Bush, er Obama, that Austrian isn't a language? http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=206...&refer=home Actually, it is a dialect of German, with its own differences, recognized nationally by Austria as their language.

QUOTE (JustWin @ Apr 7, 2009 -> 08:45 AM) This is what scares me. Right now whenever Cub fans poke fun at our attendance, we use 2005 to strike back. That's our trump card. What happens if one of these years the Cubs do win it all? Then we have nothing....absolutely nothing....to use against them. They'll have the better attendance AND the trophy. We cannot even try to use the argument of "well we won it first" because that won't mean a damn thing to anyone. In fact, even now I hear Cub fans say things like, "ha, you guys won a world series and your team is irrelevant in this town." It's so frustrating. Your frustration is what they are after. So don't waste the energy. Besides, really, who cares? The Sox do well, they are among the winningest organizations this decade, attendance has been middle to upper half for years now, the park is great, the team is set for a lot of solid years with a solid young core of talent in the majors and minors... life is good for Sox fans. Just forget about the Cubs.

Whatever puts Contreras out there in the warmest possible weather is best.

QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 7, 2009 -> 08:29 AM) WSoxMatt scared me, what's the weather looking like? 46, partly cloudy, moderate winds. Not too bad. -
QUOTE (danman31 @ Apr 6, 2009 -> 10:24 PM) Sucks that Cook has to go to AA again. He clearly is too good for that level. It would be nice to let him get another look in AAA. I guess the Sox really want these prospects to win together. Yeah I agree on Cook, but holy crap is that a strong AA lineup.

3rd annual Soxtalk softball game thread

QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Apr 6, 2009 -> 06:40 PM) Are we all supposed to bring our own bats? If so, are metal bats ok? Are we gonna play with gloves, or barehanded? If we're playing barehanded, then I don't want to play 1st base. Last time I played softball barehanded at 1st base, I sprained my left pinkie and couldn't write for a couple weeks. Also, put me down on the list, but keep in mind that I might not be 100% certain that I'll be able to make it, but I'll really try my best. And to follow up on the positions request from the poster above me, here's the positions I can play: SouthsideDon48: 2B, SS, 3B, LF, RP (I throw right-handed). Also, if it matters, I'm a switch-hitter. (However, I have more power right-handed, but better average left-handed, so pick your poison.) Its 16" softball. If you bring a glove, you will be made fun of mercilessly. -
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Apr 6, 2009 -> 06:13 PM) Now our president is bowing to the Saudi King? WTF, are you serious? Didn't you JUST get on Obama like a couple days ago for breaking protocol with foreign heads of state? For not respecting their level of office? You are seriously getting to the point of being obsessive, man.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 6, 2009 -> 03:59 PM) Same deal. The radon gas releases would happen because of just about any shift in the fault happening in certain types of rocks. Just did a bit of googling, and it really does depend on the fault. Some faults, 50% of the events might be proceeded by a radon spike. In others, 10-20%. In others, meteorology determines it a lot more. I'd be surprised if any area having an earthquake swarm didn't show a radon release spike. The gas is produced by radioactive decay, and is released by the breaking/crushing/heating of rocks, which happens any time even a small event occurs. The issue is, if you think there's a 20% chance of a major earthquake happening in the next 3 months, what do you do? Right now, the Southern San Andreas is probably at a heightened risk, compared to the 2% a year or so chance we've estimated, given that there's an active swarm happening now. But what can you do? We don't know how to evaluate the probabilities that well at all, and we certainly can't put a date on when things will happen. Should we have evacuated these cities and kept them empty for months? Should everyone have been living in tents? Should we be evacuating L.A. right now because of what the San Andreas is doing right now? Meteorology? The weather effects tectonic or volcanic changes?

QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Apr 6, 2009 -> 03:17 PM) Possibly 50 and clear Where did you see 50?

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Apr 6, 2009 -> 03:00 PM) What are the conditions supposed to be tomorrow, still cold I assume, but no chance of snow or rain? Last I saw was high of 40, possible light snow in the AM, then partly to mostly sunny in the afternoon, and less windy than today. Winds out of the NW, which is out to CF.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 6, 2009 -> 02:38 PM) 28 with as limited success in the major leagues as he has had, with an organization that values power arms, the writing is on the wall. KW would rather bring up a guy who throws hard and have him get torched than a guy like Wassermann. He's good AAA fodder, but that's it. I think this says it - Wassermann isn't a great fit here, now. But I have to say I am surprised he made it through waivers, as I am still convinced (and am in the minority) that he can be effective in the bigs in the right role.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Apr 6, 2009 -> 01:52 PM) Bachmann: Obama Wants "Re-Education Camps For Young People" LOL @ Bachmann. Is she actually Ann Coulter? Has anyone ever seen both of them at the same time?

Justin made a couple appearances in ST this year. 2 games, 2.2 IP, allowing 2 hits, 1 walk, and striking out 4. Likely he'll be in the rotation in Charlotte this year, after putting up a very good season in B-Ham last year.
-
Lucy showed up in ST looking healthy, which was a pretty big accomplishment in and of itself. He made a legitimate run at the backup C job, outlasting Armstrong and Stewart, but Miller was just too good at the plate. Lucy will be in Charlotte, with Armstrong. Hard to know how that split will work. But it seems likely that if Lucy can hit a bit in Charlotte and show he's back to 100% physically, that he'd be the first choice to take over for Miller if he does poorly (which history indicates he likely will).

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Apr 6, 2009 -> 01:05 PM) Catcher Francisco Hernandez and LHP Eric Stephenson have been placed on the restricted list. This means they either went AWOL from the organization or retired. Wow. Wasn't Hernandez looked at as a catcher of the future, at one point? He just never seemed to live up to the hype.

Are the Sox moving Opening Day to Tuesday?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 6, 2009 -> 12:08 PM) There was actually a genuine meteorology guy from Western Kentucky who did the math on this a few years ago. His results are interesting. Long, worth glancing through, but interesting. Bashes the Twins a bit for not sticking with a dome. Oh I am not saying I support things the way they are - just that its a reality that MLB does that. I would be all for altering the schedule. And I have said all along that Minneapolis building an open stadium is just assinine. -
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Apr 6, 2009 -> 12:12 PM) Ahh yes, Obama is always right and good and wholesome and everything he does is justified and right, and GWB is the asshole of the world for which everything wrong must be blamed. *YAWN* In other news, the sun will set sometime later today.

QUOTE (dmbjeff @ Apr 6, 2009 -> 10:09 AM) it really isn't that hard to avoid Chicago, New York, Boston,Cleveland,Detroit, etc. the first few weeks if they just did it right. schedule all dome and warm weather cities as the first week games. of course people would b**** still when the weather is perfect and there is no baseball. its really a no win situation. Part of the reason this isn't done is that they try to avoid the Sox and Cubs being home at the same time. Still happens a couple times a season, but that's it. If you put both Chicago teams on the road the first 2 weeks, that means you end up having them both at home for almsot 2 weeks of games.
