QUOTE(Cerbaho-WG @ Mar 29, 2007 -> 07:11 AM) It's becoming more and more apparent that this organization is littered with incompetence from the top down. You want a long f***ing reliever? There's a guy who throws a knuckleball just begging for that spot, but I guess the 6'10 lefty with no idea where the ball is going is better. And because Logan isn't on the team, you're basically delegating Thornton as your LOOGY, when it's apparent to anyone with a f***ing brain that he's more valuable than that. Jesus f***ing Christ. To be fair, Haeger doesn't know where the ball is going either On a side note, I'd rather have sisco in the pen than effing Aardsma. At least Sisco has more than 1.5 pitches in his repetoire.

Sorry to get off topic (and by off I definitely mean ON), but: I think Logan is trade bait. I think KW is (maybe?) looking at his spring training numbers as a showcase of potential, the same way that the D-Rays use their entire regular season. So other teams can window-shop for a lefty reliever. Based on stuff alone, it's conceivable that KW and co. see Logan's spring stats this year and last year as an anomaly but good enough to get a trade out of...i.e. package him with someone else and get a backup catcher. If it works out this way, I'm okay with the decision to keep Booney down. I honestly don't think he could go a full season with an ERA under 4. And yes, I'm entirely aware that he could potentially do that but we'll never know so I win! This is the only explanation I can fathom that doesn't involve Ozzie and Kenny being complete jerkwads. Maybe I'm deluding myself, or in denial.

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Mar 28, 2007 -> 12:16 AM) I generally agree that Hall's absence, Molina's addition and Perez's removal aren't moves which will ultimately determine our success. It's just small moves such as these, in addition to points Santo illustrated earlier, that have just morphed together to completely irritate me as a Sox fan. Our overall offense will still be in the top third of the American league. I'm not worried much about that. The problem is right here: Ozuna Iguchi Thome Dye Konerko Crede Uribe Anderson Molina That's a lineup we can frequently expect against lefthanded pitching. Sure, substitute Anderson for Erstad or Molina for Pierzynski, but you're not changing a whole lot. The first game against Sabathia should be an absolute hoot. Considering how pitching will determine our success, I"d rather try and provide the starters with as much offensive support as possible then just sitting back and hoping a repeat of 2005 occurs. What has transpired within the last week certainly doesn't help that belief. No question Hall and Perez would have been welcomed additions. Now that neither are on this club, one key area that the team struggled against -- and Williams attempted to upgrade -- has experienced absolutely no improvement. That's sad. It will be on the field as well when Santana is mowing through the order and all people can do is shrug their shoulders. Judging from the comments within this thread, I'm not the only one who just feels watching this ballclub that something isn't quite right. Almost as if it's inevitable we're going to struggle throughout the season. I'll tell you what I think's not quite right: the pitching staff. If I saw a fastball hit 93 mph this spring, I wouldn't give a crap about Eduardo Perez. But seeing as our pitching staff shows no signs of turning over a new leaf, these little moves are amplified. Right now I'm inches away from panicking about our rotation, particularly Buehrle who appears to have zero stuff and still gets the ball up.

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Mar 26, 2007 -> 03:54 PM) But hey, atleast our minor league depth should make replacing Hall somewhat reasonable. What? There is no depth at the catching position? yeah we shouldn't have traded miguel olivo, what were we thinking? -
Final out of the WS. That was a heck of a throw. And then he got mugged by paulie.
-
Buehrle also, i wish i had a shingo takatsu jersey. i dont care how he ended up, when he was on he was the most fun pitcher i've ever watched
-
Yeah that wasn't a very revealing interview. I think I knew all that before they made the trade.
-
woohoo! he's on WSCR now!

anybody else thinking floyd's got an uphill battle now?

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 22, 2007 -> 07:58 PM) I have no idea what else a man can possibly do to earn a bullpen spot other than put up an ERA of 0. Wild pitch, smith to 2nd. Kenny Perez grounds out to Bloomquist. Wikipedia up with 2 outs, runner on 3rd. He told me the elephant population has tripled in the last month. He's a knowledgable one, for a 3rd string catcher. -

hurray for booney! so I just got in and saw contreras' pitching line, 1 IP...I panicked for a second thinking he was injured but after looking at this game thread, it was just because of the rain delay, right? please say I'm right........ -
QUOTE(VAfan @ Mar 22, 2007 -> 01:33 AM) 6. Why did we devote $11+ million a year starting next season to lock up our worst starter from 2006? It seems to me that Javier Vazquez's contribution (or lack thereof) to our pitching staff would be the easiest to replace from among our young arms. So why not take the $10 million difference between JV's deal and what we'd have to pay a rookie pitcher and use it to keep Jermaine Dye? Then you could have traded Vazquez == now, or in mid-season -- to get some real outfielders to play alongside Dye. (Like Chris Young -- the one outfielder in our system that actually had major league talent.) I'm not ripping Kenny for the trades he made this offseason. We needed mound depth, and he got some young power arms. But I'm not crazy about the Vazquez extension, and I'm downright disgusted that Darren Erstad and Scott Podsednik are 2/3 of our starting outfield. It's the deals we DIDN'T make that have left gaping holes in our roster. Maybe this team will surprise us. But just wishing it will all turn out won't make it so. At the moment, I'm not optimistic. Because he's better than Jason Marquis, yet somehow cheaper. On a side note, I think it's funny that all the "concern" about our ballclub revolves around our lineup, which is frankly stupid because that was not our problem last year. If we need to be worried about something, why aren't there more posts on Buehrle/Contreras/Garland/Vazquez? (VAfan's post is excepted because I'm directly responding to a post about Vazquez )

QUOTE(Capn12 @ Mar 20, 2007 -> 02:46 AM) I can't wait for us to be Ross Gload's b**** all year, and you KNOW its going to happen, he will have the big hits against us at some point. someone had to pick up where mike sweeney left off...since he's 13059173957 years old now...

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Mar 19, 2007 -> 11:41 PM) Red Sox: 1.) Julio Lugo 2.) Covelli Crisp/Kevin Youkilis On a completely random side note, when did people start calling Coco by his full name? It's not nearly as funny...I'm boycotting Covelli.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 19, 2007 -> 07:42 PM) Hopefully it'll be KW signing him anyway and the spot he hits in will therefore have no effect on his contract. Anyway, I still think that eventually, if Anderson can cut down on the strikeouts, he'll make an ideal #2 hitter, probably sooner than some of us think. i like the way you think!
-
QUOTE(Capn12 @ Mar 19, 2007 -> 07:38 PM) Clearly #2 hitter material there. Like Gooch and his 350+ OBP should hit 2nd, yeah right!! I bet the gooch gets back to the 2-hole before the season starts. I'd be mad at KW if I were him cuz he's got more talent than that.

wow, does wiki have a really good arm?

He's got a point about all the Gonzalezes. Potentially, you could have the following call: "Gonzalez sets up low for Gonzalez. Gonzalez delivers. Gonzalez swings and hits a one-hopper to Gonzalez who throws on to first for the out." I wish that had actually happened.

oh noooo! we never should have given up ross gload!

Personally, I think Danks clearly has the better stuff. I just hope that if he makes the ballclub to start the year, he doesn't have too short a leash. Historically, he struggles early at each level but turns it on by the end. From the first article, it appears Danks is a quick learner because he seemed to know exactly why he was getting burned and didn't give the usual interview tripe that means nothing. Floyd's an unknown quantity, but part of me wants him to start the year in the 5th spot because I think whoever starts there will get yanked before the end.

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Mar 18, 2007 -> 04:50 PM) Might be reading a little too much into it. On the the radio ads they have running, they mention Aardsma, and I really doubt he has much chance at the bullpen right now. They're just talking him up to Cubs fans so we can trade him back

QUOTE(rpmahr @ Mar 18, 2007 -> 01:54 AM) i dont understand people bashing pods and erstad before the season starts. if they can both stay healthy i think that they will only help our team. you cant really make any judgements before the season because anything can happen. erstad has been a great hitter in the past and he has shown this spring that there is no reason that he cant regain his past performance even after his past couple of years. look at frank thomas last year, he had a couple of injury plagued bad seasons then had a change of scenery by moving to oakland and then had a solid season. there is no reason that erstad cant have that same fate. Hahaha, I agree but people are never done beating their favorite dead scapegoat. Anyway, if we're going to move Iguchi out of the two-hole (which I don't necessarily think is a bad idea since he's wasting a lot of talent there), I don't see how we can move him anywhere but the 6-spot. That said, I also don't see how we can't plug Crede in there with the power he has. I mean putting him 8th? That's like the dead spot in the lineup. In any case, I understand the theory behind Erstad hitting 2nd. He's the prototypical no. 2 guy because he practices excellent fundamentals and has good speed but doesn't have good enough tools to belong elsewhere in the lineup. Too bad he's a lefty. I agree, put Dye in 3rd, Konerko in 4th, and Thome in 5th. Then you have LLRRLRLRR. Not too shabby. Hard to dodge that if you're the opposing manager.
