  1. QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Apr 21, 2008 -> 11:06 AM) I do worry about the run scoring aspect however. This team has 3 regulars hitting above .250. yeah but what's their OPS? run production doesn't always come from how often you get a hit, it more often comes from how hard you hit it and how often people are there to drive in. after all, it may take 2 seeing eye singles to get a runner in from 2b, which would raise batting averages, whereas one double will always get them home. thats just my opinion of the matter
  2. QUOTE (Hawkfan @ Apr 19, 2008 -> 06:43 PM) billy koch did it without the velocity how dare you
  3. this thread is silly. konerko can kill the ball. why would you ever sit him on the bench? what, are you gonna move swisher to 1b, anderson to CF, and move everyone up in the order? anderson's bat > konerko's? hurray for reactionary baseball!
  4. haha i forgot what topic i was in. yeah, nice win! gotta love seeing the count return to form, even if it was just for the night. jenks, you are a monster.
  5. Personally, I'm in the boat of not touching Uribe till our offense cools down. At the moment, we can eat a bad batter in exchange for stellar defense. Pretty much every team has a mediocre bat hitting somewhere towards the end of their order, and we're no different (Tigers excluded). I've seen Uribe save a few runs himself, and pretty directly. I don't recall against whom, but the game where he pegged out the runner going to third as the cutoff man, that saved a run. He did something else in that game, too, though I can't remember what now, so feel free to hack away at my argument. I firmly believe that Richar doesn't make either of those plays, so his defense is not negligible. I also generally disagree with the sentiment that 2B defense doesn't matter. Does SS defense matter? He's the SS on the other side of the field. Against left handed batters and slap-hitting righties, 2B defense is more important than SS defense. The proportion of lefties to righties isn't split evenly, but it's not of negligible impact either. This is not to mention his services as a cutoff man, which could be huge in close run-scoring situations which is exactly when you need good defense. Someone previously stated that we'd be all over Uribe once the bats started slowing down, so why not start now? Well, I agree. I'll be back all over his crappy approach (though he does appear to be TRYING to be patient and hit what he's given, so give him an ounce of credit) once we need a better bat in the lineup. The thing is, who knows how long our offensive wave will last? Why interrupt our game-changing defense before we need to? It's like taking a starting pitcher out after an inning of hitless ball just because they have a history of poor performance. You gotta wait till they need to be taken out. Just my two cents. By the way, I'm no big Uribe fan. Long term, Richar all the way!
  6. depends, is it possible to make a statue of his Mickey Mouse-like voice?
  7. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Apr 15, 2008 -> 11:14 PM) I was always a Frank fan growing up but I remember reading in a card magazine that Griffey loved playing video games online is his spare time -- so he was cool too. Hell of a player too. I remember a game I went to with my summer league team in MI back at old Tiger stadium vs the Mariners. We had terrible seats like way back in the lower deck CF but we moved down right by Griffee as nobody was there. Watching him that close, even for one game, was fun. He made a lot of plays. oh yeah, that was back in the tigers stadium days. that was one giant piece of crappy seating, tigers stadium. i went to a tigers/sox game there when i was a kid, too. i had a great view of a pillar.
  8. as probably the best sox player in history, i'm amazed that there's a question regarding this. even if you like aparicio or shoeless joe better, he's still top 3 and deserves all the accolades we can give him regardless of the circumstances of his departure.
  9. Really could happen. All this is true, not to mention I feel like our bench is pretty studly. Granted, we haven't seen much of the season but we have seen things we can draw a trend from. For instance, there is almost certainly a new hitting approach. Lots of nice, stay-back swings on the nasty stuff away that turn into up-the-middle and other-way singles. Definitely more patience. I dunno, I tend to think it's possible but my real guess is we finish just short. At least we'll be a pain in the butt to a lot of teams. P.S. I'm not a huge Owens detractor, I think he could have some value if he develops appropriately. But not on this team as it's currently configured. Right now, we're an OBP team and Owens is not yet an OBP player. So keep him away from my lineup! Please!
  10. QUOTE (Shadows @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 02:02 AM) dude i can respetc that.. but me, im a logn hair facial hair pierced up tattiod dude and im in the wrong threwad cyuz im lookin for the drunk one are you a happy drunk or an angry drunk? cuz we have positive and negative threads now so take your pick QUOTE (CryptviLL @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 12:07 AM) I think the facial hair is fine, Swishers + Bobby's looks very normal.. Can't say much about Boone's tho.. for the record, i think logan's beard is very appropriate for someone named "Boone". don't ask me why. i just think it's a very lumberjacky name. and yeah, lumberjacky's a word, look it up!
  11. Joe Crede with an unbelievable, miraculous play! He sterilized another Twin! Oh yeah, and I guess he hit a grand slam, too.
  12. QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 8, 2008 -> 11:07 AM) I would argue that of all the major professional sports, strategically speaking, the job of manager in baseball is the least important to a winning team compared to a NFL head coach/coordinator or a NBA coach. There are basic things that all managers should know how to do across the board that are done on every team, but overall, a manager can do much more to bring a team down by being a complete moron than he can bring it up by being a genius. A manager is only as good as his players almost all the time, and a lot of things are out of his control. I actually agree with most of this sentiment, which is why I value managers who can do the things that don't show up on stat sheets, like keeping a cohesive clubhouse and giving the team a fighting attitude.
  13. all i know is i wouldn't trade Crede's granny today for any kind of hindsight. Keep it up, it couldn't hurt!
  14. QUOTE (PWSox87 @ Apr 8, 2008 -> 02:12 AM) He got all ball haha i like this one best
  15. One quick correction: the red sox and yankee fans always think they have the best manager in history because they're self-entitled f***heads
  16. Not gonna lie, I'm a pretty big Ozzie fan. As a message board, we tend to overanalyze things on a statistical basis, and are therefore hyper-critical of Ozzie's decision-making (a bunch of us said Thome shouldn't start vs. Sabathia but that turned out alright). Overlooked is the fact that he keeps his players loose and cohesive, he takes pressure off of them, he defends them to the press and the umps, and more often than not he DOES make the right in-game decision. You can tell by his record as a manager. Everyone on every team's message board thinks they have a bad manager, though, because they only see one team's mistakes. And they don't realize that if they did away with their current manager there would be absolutely no guarantees that they'd get a more competent replacement. Oh yeah, and he's mostly hilarious. He crosses the line on occasion, but for the most part I think he's pretty amusing. His players sure seem to think so. Anyway, could be worse. We could have Jerry Manual.
  17. QUOTE(TitoMB345 @ Apr 4, 2008 -> 02:20 AM) Let's start him off with a nice sparkly 18.00 ERA!! c'moooon, we can do better than that! let's give him a buehrle-like ERA of 30.00+!
  18. QUOTE(BearSox @ Apr 3, 2008 -> 10:33 PM) Also, Owens and Pods are pretty much a wash. In fact, I'd say Owens is a downgrade because he is even worse defensively (if that's possibly), and is just a terrible hitter. Lets compare last year's opening day lineup vs. this year's... you really think so? i'm not saying owens plays stellar defense, but i don't see how someone who can play centerfield is worse than someone who can't serviceably play left field. i mean, i didn't see any fly balls bouncing off owens's head

QUOTE(stretchstretch @ Apr 2, 2008 -> 01:27 AM) Ozzie seems to prefer players of his native tongue when they're an option vs. those not of said tonguage, I'm not one bit surprise by this or Alexei out ther over BA wow.... i HIGHLY, HIGHLY doubt that has anything to do with dotel over linebrink in this situation. where is it written that linebrink is ahead of dotel on the list of reliable 'pen arms? we've barely seen either one, so it was a tossup.
  20. QUOTE(GreenSox @ Apr 2, 2008 -> 01:09 AM) Owens needs to stay in AAA. He can't hit and he can't field and he has scant little potential to hit. Guillen's man-love for players who hit like he did is absolutely ridiculous. Erstad last year "a .400 hitter" because he swung at everything and could make his outs wherever Ozzie told him to - just like Ozzie did as a player; Owens this year over 3 superior candidates (Ramirez, Anderson, Quinten). Uribe - anothter Ozzie-style hitter, but with more power. Meanwhile, legitimate talent wallows in AAA or in Ozzie's doghouse. Here's a suggestion to young players: forget taking pitches and drawing walks. Swing at everything and emulate Ozzie and Walker as hitters as best you can, and you'll have a better shot. I'm not saying that's an exaggeration but... Wait, yes I am.
  21. The thing i liked most about yesterday was folks staying back on the ball and hitting it the other way. I noticed AJ did that a few times, as well as Swish and OCab. That way they can stop killing us low-and-away. Guarantee you the Indians never saw that coming! Oh yeah, and the heart was very evident, though I actually think the staying-back thing will have a greater affect on our W/L record than our heart. HIGHLY entertaining! Can't wait for more! Oh yeah, and nice job stepping on Garko's back, AJ! I know you had no choice but I'll give you credit anyway. Go ahead, call me classless, but that amused me.
  22. Back to the original topic, I'm all over Owens batting 9th (it's what I do) assuming we HAVE to have him on the team. The only problem there is that Ozzie will never ever ever ever EVER bat him anything but leadoff. Okay maybe not that many evers, but quite a few. Also, Quentin should be in our lineup in my opinion. Or Anderson cuz he plays superb CF, as we all know, and might develop a bat sooner or later. Anywho, I'm on your side.
  23. QUOTE(lostfan @ Mar 31, 2008 -> 08:57 PM) Holy s*** that is just plain eerie, I didn't read this until just now. lol Haha yeah, I'm quite proud of that one, even if it was entirely unintentional and came at the expense of the Sox. Anyway, Masset made it and it was the right call. Woo! Just please don't use him when it matters, Ozzie...this outing did not convince me he's anything more than Mr. 2nd-6th Inning.
  24. Now, I'm not trying to say I'm Nostradamus but... anybody feel like jumping on my bandwagon? EDIT: For the record, I really didn't think Buehrle would blow it today. I'm just trying to say that this is EXACTLY the situation I was talking about previously.
  25. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Mar 30, 2008 -> 06:14 PM) Thats not my job, it's Williams and Guillen job, something they clearly screwed up on. This didn't sneak up on them. I don't know if they expected Nick to come out strong in Spring Training, but given his AAA numbers, along with his career MLB numbers, there was NO REASON to expect him to be able to handle regular work at the MLB level. Ozzie in the last day has basically come out and said Nick is here solely for the reason of the organization not wanting to lose him, not because of the numbers he put up, which pale in comparison to Wass. They could, and should have seen this coming in November. Stretch out Wass over the off-season, or, if they are that concerned about having a true "mop-up" guy as you claim they should be, go out and get someone that can put up an ERA under 7. It's the exact same situation as Owens. There are better players currently on the roster, but because he is fast, he is given a free ride because "the team needs it more." Bulls***. Assemble a team, and put the best players on the field. The only way to justify this move is Williams and the staff being completely irresponsible this off-season, and a solid pitcher like Wasserman has to waste effective innings in Charlotte, while Nick can throw his 5 innings a week in blow outs, when we really need him the most. You're more concerned about garbage innings than effective, important innings in the 6th-7th. It seems as if the Sox are as well. A nice winning attitude. Okay then, your argument is that KW and Ozzie screwed the pooch by not landing a better long guy. I agree wholeheartedly. Our long guy likely sucks. But given the choices we currently have for the last roster spot, I don't see how you could pick Wasserman and say "Nah, this team just doesn't need a long reliever".
