One of the first "projected" standings, Sox dead last
ScottyDo replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Apparently losing Vazquez, O-cab and Swisher = 20 game swing. I don't buy it. We're a mid-80's team that can swing 8 games either way. -
just add the qualifying article "a" to the title line. White Sox get a Ryan Braun. see? much more palatable.

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jan 12, 2009 -> 08:01 PM) Figgins for Dye makes me want to vomit. ditto. we can't be that desperate for a leadoff guy..........can we?

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jan 11, 2009 -> 05:48 PM) I almost had a chance to do that at Flyers Stadium in schaumburg during a Memorial Day weekend event. I was in charge of sound. During a sound check, i ALMOST did it. PS: Thanks to all the mods/admins... past, present, and future. you're welcome

I know I'm not the only one who took Quentin/Dye, but am I the only one willing to admit it? I'm not really taking into account contract situations, but on a pure talent level, I've seen JD's peak and it's at least equivalent to Morneau's IMO. Quentin will likely be better than all of them. And while Mauer throws an interesting factor into the equation with his position, I just see OPS as being the most valuable stat. Of course, I'd take him. That would be nice. Mmmm, OBP...

DAMN YOU!!! you almost made me crap my pants, in which case you would have owed me a new pair of pants! stupid pitchers...

QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Dec 21, 2008 -> 07:41 PM) That would be great! I just want to see The Q playing for someone. The man deserves respect, dag gummit!

God, I love that kid...if only our offense would have picked him up a few more times in the W category, he would be getting a LOT more attention. I don't know if that's good or bad but it's nice to see one of our best players recognized.

Obsessed with (the lack of) Sox off-season moves?
ScottyDo replied to shipps's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Dec 21, 2008 -> 08:14 PM) I check Soxtalk just about daily, but not really for any big news, just cause I dig on baseball and this is just about the best thing to satisfy that hunger during the offseason (especially one as cold and f***ing ridiculous as this one has been this far). At this point I'm in a sort of a "surprise me" mode. I don't expect too much to take place until the new year, and even if then. Waiting for the Sox to make a move is sort of like waiting for Guns 'N Roses to drop Chinese Democracy. Hopefully when it happens the wait will have been just as worthwhile. And WAS Chinese Democracy worthwhile? /hijack -
QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Dec 20, 2008 -> 03:08 PM) Here is a CF I would love to see KW go after... of course the price would be high I'd imagine... Jays Listening On Wells By Ben Nicholson-Smith [December 20 at 8:58am CST] Jon Heyman has heard that the Blue Jays "have fielded a few trade inquiries" about Vernon Wells, though they are not shopping him. Wells has six years and over $100MM remaining on his contract. Because of the Jays' financial constraints, they could consider trading Wells or closer B.J. Ryan for the right package. Trading the center fielder would likely take a lot of creativity on the part of Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi given the amount the club owes Wells. I want to stay as far away from that contract as I can. I think Vernon Wells is an excellent player but I don't think anyone should be signed for more than 5 seasons, MAXIMUM. How can you project that a guy will be worth $16MM/year six years from now?
-
The sad thing is, people will shut up about his "possible concerns" for now, but he'll have to do the same thing in a year. I don't see why nobody's willing to accept that velocity and K's aren't the be-all, end-all statistics of a closer. You'd think saves, ERA, and BAA would be proof of effectiveness.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Dec 17, 2008 -> 09:30 PM) Why? We had high expectations for the guy, and he came here, didn't fit in, was overrated defensively, was as bad as ROYCE CLAYTON at the plate for the majority of the year, that to me gives plenty of reasons to hate the guy. don't forget he was a jerk... that said, i don't really hate him that much, i just don't mind him going elsewhere

Rumors: Sox/Reds Talking Dye for Bailey Swap

Angels May Consider Trading For Dye or Paulie
ScottyDo replied to Kenny Hates Prospects's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 06:10 PM) If you trade Paulie and not Dye then you sign Adam Dunn to play 1B. Unless you get Weaver + Figgins (not likely but whatever), then you move Fields to 1b where he probably belongs anyway and you have a leadoff hitter. Yum. -
Angels May Consider Trading For Dye or Paulie

Weaver! To continue the math from the Abreu posts: Abreu + Weaver >>>>>> Dye (although I do heart Dye) DO IT! -
I would trade TCQ for a single-A 1B prospect

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Dec 9, 2008 -> 12:02 PM) This is interesting (from MLB Trade Rumors): Ludwick is worrisome simply because he had been a AAAA player up until last year and is 30 years old, but if he's going to come that cheap then the Sox should really take a good luck at him. I assume they want more than just a top reliever under team control, but would anyone send them something like Linebrink + Richard + a prospect or two? Or something along those lines? That would seem a very cheap price to pay for a guy who hit .299/.375/.591 last year with 37 HR and 113 RBI. I'm a little rusty, but I think we'll have a hard time dealing Linebrink anywhere with his contract. The move was kind of laughed at around the baseball world when we gave him all those dollars. I think we're stuck with him whether it was the right move or not (my leanings say he'll be worth the money in the long run, but another injury or two...)

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 9, 2008 -> 11:54 AM) I would rather avoid Bradley's attitude, I just don't like him at all. Just my personal opinion, which I am sure most don't share. But no doubt he could be a huge bat in the lineup. Don't worry, you're not alone in that sentiment. I wouldn't bash the signing because there's no doubt he's got a lot of qualities we need, but eesh, the clubhouse stuff...I'm not sure how the Sox clubhouse is going to be next year with all these changes, let alone adding a potential catalyst like Bradley... It could work, but I think there are other outfielders I'd rather see in a Sox uni.

QUOTE (beck72 @ Nov 29, 2008 -> 10:43 AM) When Ozzie "called out" Javy about not being a big game pitcher [i forget which game it was late in the year], and Javy responded by being too cautious, and trying to be too fine with his pitches instead of attacking hitters, he probably wrote his ticket out of here. His starts after that were all the same--he wasn't being aggressive. That's been Javy's MO all his career. The sox gave him every opportunity to turn it around. But if it's not in his makeup by now, it probably isn't going to happen. When a guy has the pure "stuff Vazquez has, and can't step up when his team needs him for a big game, and he has an ERA in the mid 4's, it's time to move on. The sox have [or should have] consistent guys in Buehrle, Danks, and Floyd who can give the team 6 innings and give the team a chance to win even when they are struggling. Javy can do that for the most part, especially vs. weaker teams. But he's been MIA in games when it's mattered. The sox should expect more from a guy with Javy's arm and salary, and be able to come up big like Danks did vs the Twins in the 1-game playoff. That said, Javy has very good value for teams out there needing someone to give a staff innings and a decent ERA. I guess I don't understand why everyone assumes the White Sox DON'T need that... Like, do we have a guy coming up that can replace Vazquez's ERA and innings next year that I don't know about? Or is there some big FA deal in the works that would totally be out of KW's character? I'm not a big Vazquez fan, he's done a lot to hinder himself while here and definitely hasn't lived up to his potential (like everywhere), but if we trade him, whoever replaces him has to be of his value or better...

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 28, 2008 -> 12:00 PM) Ok so I see here that he points out Alexei's high BABIP as some kind of red flag... ok... when you're batting over .300, how are you NOT going to have a high BABIP? His point with BABIP is that he's only hitting over .300 BECAUSE of his high BABIP, which tends to regress to a number slightly below Alexei's. That said, if Alexei were hitting grounders through the holes, this stat would have a lot more applicability, but I guarantee you BABIP for a line drive is much higher than BABIP for grounders, and Alexei is a line drive hitter. Another piece of that blog that bothers me is that he continually references the small sample size for the things Alexei appears to be doing well, but completely ignores the small sample size for the things Alexei appears to be doing poorly. Cherry picking stats? Looks like it.

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jul 26, 2008 -> 11:05 PM) Sox now 21-2 against the Tigers when Dye homers. That stat is ludicrous if only because of the total number of times Dye has homered against them. He hasn't been with us THAT long, christ!

QUOTE (Brian @ Jul 25, 2008 -> 09:02 PM) Nice approach by OC. yeah but he swung first pitch

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 25, 2008 -> 08:46 PM) Actually he's the CF'er, Paulie plays 1B. Maybe you meant the batting order? The new cleanup hitter is doing a hell of a job. what he's saying is that if we got rid of konerko, swisher would be playing 1b and then people would be complaining that their 1b is still hitting .230ish.
