  1. I don't think we'd get sufficient cash back to make the deal worth it
  2. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 14, 2009 -> 08:02 PM) The key things to consider is the following: Quentin will hopefully be healthy and if that happens he'll be a hell of a lot more productive - Beckham will have a full year under his belt - Rotation will be much better - Pen should be solid; Pena, Linebrink, and Jenks are better than they've shown and a healthy Putz would be a nice upgrade - Teahen should be a better hitter than Getz - Rios has a history of being significantly better than shown - Ramirez will be much better defensively and in year three much more consistent Obviously all of the above might not happen, but I expect most of the above will happen and that alone makes the Sox a hell of a lot better of a club. +1 from the rosy optimist
  3. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Dec 14, 2009 -> 07:56 PM) Yes you can. Just bring in a s***load of invites to spring to fill out your bench. Who really cares? I'd like to know how any combination of this all-star bench lineup we've got is going to make up for what a hitter like Matsui would have provided as a starter. I'm done with this. The moves themselves, in a vacuum, are not bad moves at all. The overall idea however of blowing our payroll flexibility on a bunch of Adrian Griffins is. We're not a National League team playing in a pitcher's park. We do need some actual offense here. One could argue that many, many teams have lost out on the playoffs on the back of horrible bench play. You could also argue that teams have lost out because they were missing that ONE position player but I don't tend to think one argument is more valid than the other.
  4. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Dec 14, 2009 -> 07:45 PM) Well, we've spent $2.75M on Teahen considering the $1M from the Royals; $1.5M on Kotsay; $500k-$1.5M on Jones; $1.375M for Vizquel; $3M-$6.25M on Putz and that's apparently what we had to work with. So that's $9.125M-$13.375M on bench players and reclamation projects. Matsui is signing for $6.5M. Call me crazy, but I'd glady give up all of those guys and take Carrasco and league minimum bench fodder if it meant having a real DH. you can't just ignore the bench. at least $5m of that HAD to be spent. especially considering fields would have been our 3b option under those circumstances.
  5. QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Dec 14, 2009 -> 07:39 PM) i dont know,i just feel like vlad has the potential to put up better (power) numbers at the cell than matsui personally, I'm just in love with the Vladdy of yore and part of me wants to believe that he's still got some of that. So I agree with you. However, most (all) of that is gut instinct and the reason I suck at fantasy baseball, let alone real-life GMing.
  6. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Dec 14, 2009 -> 07:32 PM) Jenks has all his health issues, Linebrink is Linebrink, Randy Williams has never done anything worth mentioning, Pena is still a highly-talented work-in-progress, Putz is coming off surgery. The only virtual certainty is Thornton. Yes, we have some nice bench players. The problem is we do not have any starters for RF or DH. We've blown our wad on bench players and reclamation projects. You can even make the argument that we have actually downgraded from our already pathetic 2009 offense. The only way that wouldn't be the case would be if both Quentin and Rios perform up to their expectations and Paulie doesn't regress. Who is going to replace the 1st half Dye had, or Thome, or Pods? This offense as currently constructed is terrible. Jones doesn't have hardly any potential anymore. He has slowed down a ton. It's not like if the 2009 Texas version of Andruw Jones got regular playing time he would have been good again. The guy needs to come up with a time machine. The time of year really doesn't matter if we're out of money. We're stuck with Paulie and Linebrink, and Kenny has already said Jenks will be the closer. Where are we going to come up with the funds to sign anyone good? We've blown our resources on luxuries. That's why the offseason blows. I realize this will be very unpopular among the "it's only December!!!" crowd but I don't care. So far, Kenny's offseason grade should be no better than a D. There is still time to make a trade that dumps sallary. People are so quick to say that nobody would EVER take Paulie (i know, NTC) linebrink (NTC again) or Jenks, yet there are all sorts of iffy contracts shuffled around as the year progresses. Also, we tend to undervalue our own players pretty constantly because we're a smarter/more cynical fan base than most, so I wouldn't rule out a sallary-dumping trade just yet. Also, the offseason has not yet begun to heat up, so you can assign him a D but you could assign a D to a hitter that bats .200 in April too. Doesn't mean jack squat because april MVP is rarely october MVP and april goat is rarely october goat. Sorry if that metaphor is a little off-base but I think you get my point. Wait till February before you start worrying. Aaaalso, as some have mentioned before, Peavy and Rios were essentially moves for this offseason. I don't think the Rios acquisition was an appalling move like some people seem to think. In fact, I think if KW had made that move yesterday, there would be a moderate smattering of optimism about the whole thing. It's just that we set an artificial division between the end of october and the beginning of november as the time to make impactful moves.
  7. QUOTE (kev211 @ Dec 14, 2009 -> 06:13 PM) At least the picture is of that slam. okay i must confess, i didnt even look at the pictures hahaha. also, i apparently read playboy for the articles.
  8. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Dec 14, 2009 -> 06:34 PM) Why would this be sarcastic? It appears we've blown our payroll room on bench players and reclamation projects. Kenny has been more under the influence than under the radar at this point. I really hope this changes because this is the most disappointing offseason I've ever experienced, given what the expectations should be knowing our starting rotation. can i buy you a calendar for christmas? it's december 14th
  9. How did they neglect to mention Paulie's grannie in the world series? I'm pretty sure that's what all of us will remember most highly over his career. At least, I will. That was my favorite moment in sports history (Hester's opening return in the SB is a close second, though)
  10. QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 14, 2009 -> 05:11 PM) People keep giving you a hard time, but it's really disappointing how much Rios' contract could be hampering our chances at signing other valuable pieces. I agree with you that Matsui would have been a pefect fit, and 6.5 million isn't a lot. imagine our outfield WITHOUT rios. he's not a guarantee to be good but it's certainly a possibility
  11. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 13, 2009 -> 06:23 PM) People here hated Thome. Thome is better than Cust and at least he won't hurt you in the field. Did we really?
  12. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Dec 12, 2009 -> 04:29 PM) I still don't understand how Melky Cabrera gained this repuation of being a very good to great defender, aside from his arm he's yet to show these special defensive abilities over a full season. There's a lot I don't understand about Melky love. I think the Yanks just went to town hyping him up and everyone listened for some reason. I guess all accounts have him as an incredibly toolsy player but I have yet to see anything to fall in love with...
  13. QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 10, 2009 -> 09:26 PM) Linebrink will never be a long reliever, he doesn't have the stamina. Besides, why would you want a guy who fails at short relief to pitch longer? Because that way he's in when it matters least. But I agree.
  14. QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Apr 23, 2009 -> 10:41 PM) For the life of me, I can't seem to be able to find a Sox hat big enough for my head. I've checked everywhere, such as sports stores such as Sports Authority and Dick's, and even the biggest sized Sox hats are too tight on me. I just have a big head, and I wish I can get a Sox hat that was 8 inches or bigger. I'd like to wear one that actually comes closer to my ears instead of being almost 2 inches above my ears. ask bobby jenks where he gets his
  15. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 21, 2009 -> 01:33 PM) They would go 8-32 against lefties and 84-38 against righties. and the AL Central teams would stop employing any player that plays on the left side of the field.
  16. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 20, 2009 -> 09:14 PM) When is the last time that assists from the outfield measured anything, usually, but the worst outfield arms or defenders that were constantly challenged by opposing 3B coaches like Carlos Lee or Alphonso Soriano? C'mon. I realize Rowand and Anderson are like Immortals to some here, but this is getting ridiculous...above-average arm strength has magically morphed into something more than it is. Brian Anderson has all of 4 outfield assists in 244 games played in his career. Lance Johnson had 11 assists in 1991 and 1992. One Dog had one of the worst arms in the history of the game...rivaling Juan Pierre, Jerry Owens, Scott Podsednik and Johnny Damon. To have a "plus" arm on the traditional scouting scale, you'd have to be at 60+. There is no way that Brian Anderson has a plus arm...maybe 50 or 55, but not a 60 or above for his position. I would be more interested to see his number of innings played, as he often appeared for one inning as a late defensive replacement.
  17. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 21, 2009 -> 07:32 AM) 1) Can we really argue that ST assist totals create a theorem that BA has a "great" or "plus" arm? 2) I never, once....on any message board...have said that Anderson doesn't play "good/great" defense. I just don't believe his throwing arm (or Rowand's for that matter) were/are so great. Anderson's is stronger than Rowand...and he doesn't overthrow so many balls into the mound or balls that bouce 5-6 times b4 they get to home plate, but he's just not very accurate usually. 3) If he doesn't swing at the first couple of pitches...good MLB pitchers will pick up on that and carve him apart. In the Rays' series, I suppose we can just go with another theory that BA "got lucky" never to receive first pitch strikes and got ahead in counts and was able to get some walks and a few scratch singles. Relying on that to continue won't/can't be a "new" offensive theory...as BA down 0-1 or 0-2 usually equals death by lethal injection for baserunners. I'm confused. How do you know he wouldn't have taken a hack at first pitch if it were a strike? I'm not saying he definitely would have, but I'm not ready to concede that he definitely wouldn't either. Also, why would you help pitchers out who are having trouble with the strike zone? If I recall, we took an inordinate number of walks against the Rays. Gameplan.
  18. QUOTE (qwerty @ Apr 21, 2009 -> 01:08 AM) Ya, that always hurts. I can't stand when a player is even closer to home than the average hit (single). I don't think he was trying to imply that slugging is bad, just that you can't focus on slugging to the exclusion of all else, especially since we've got so much of it when averaged over the whole team. It's silly to expect your entire lineup to crush the ball consistently. If we had 9 Jim Thomes on our ball club, I don't know that we would be that good.
  19. Remember the days when we were terrified of starting a season with BOTH Danks and Floyd on the roster as though that were a death sentence? Yeah, me neither. Screw those days.
  20. To quote the horse from Powdered Toast Man: No sir, I don't like it.
  21. HURRAY! my name makes sense again! ...but not really hurray.
  22. That video clip was full of bad signs for the yankees! i love it! and i still love swish even if his stay was less than successful
  23. I never have and never will boo my own team because it's not at all productive...BUT! A) nobody was booing Wise, its not his fault he was leading off, B ) it was opening day so whatever fans feel is magnified way more than it would be on almost any other day, and C) if brian anderson looks as lost at the plate as Wise did, there's a good chance he gets booed too
  24. QUOTE (b-Rye @ Apr 13, 2009 -> 07:19 PM) I'd rather see farmer and stone on tv anyday... hawk needs to join dj I was just gonna post something to this effect. The best combo I think we've had was Farmer/Stoney. They were impeccable together.
  25. what the hell is paulie doing on the basepaths lately?
