  1. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Mar 30, 2014 -> 08:51 PM) That's what some people say but it is there for a reason. Boggs was cut because he sucked in the spring. Plenty of people think Jordan Danks has shown his worth because of his spring. Well, I should modify my statement. You can show you completely suck in Spring Training, but you can't show you're awesome. Every professional player has a good couple of weeks. There's no way to know whether those couple of weeks are sustainable, though. Thus, Boggs can pitch his way out of a job, but Semien shouldn't be able to play his way onto the team unless he's completely proven his mettle in his development process. He hasn't yet. Soon.
  2. WOOHOO! Only Opening Day could make me not hate the 5 hour exam I'm about to take!
  3. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Mar 30, 2014 -> 08:06 PM) This is a very tough call. On one hand Balta is right. What Semien did last year at the ML level screams for more AAA time. However what he did in spring training is screaming I'm ready now. Which situation do you think is more indicative of the truth ? Marcus played at 3 levels last year , then the AZ. Fall League. If his AFL performance is any indication he was worn out by then. In ST he hit well and took his walks , easily leading the Sox with 9 when the next closest guy had only 5. If you want to argue Beckham was rushed and somehow it hurt his development ,go for it ,but at some point the talent has to show. One case does not apply to another case. I've argued in the past about maximaizing what you get in trades for guys like Beckham , Gillaspie, De Aza, Viciedo when rebuilding but sometimes you have to bite the bullet and get nothing close to what you had hoped to and just be happy you have someone who can step right in. Finally depth at 2nd base with Carlos Sanchez and Micah Johnson means even if Marcus gets sent down where will all these guys play ? Who's the better SS Semien or Sanchez ? Does it make sense to get sent down and play out of position ? Bottom line if Semien is ready then play him . At least 2nd base will be one position out of the way during the rebuild and Sanchez and Micah are good problems to have. Never, ever put stock in ST numbers
  4. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Mar 30, 2014 -> 06:25 PM) If Semien is even average, he goes down for seasoning, IMO. But there should absolutely have the opportunity to steal the job. If he decides he's going to break out this year, the FO would be insane to interrupt it. If he breaks out in the majors, he should destroy the minors. The whole Beckham experience has convinced me that you can't necessarily learn pitch selection at the major league level. For that reason, I say give Beckham another chance unless Semien forces the issue from AAA (and I guess if he absolutely lights it up the next week or so, then you can talk but I wouldn't buy a good week as actual progress anyway). This is legitimately Beckham's last shot, though. For the first time, there are actual competitive options to shorten his leash.
  5. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Mar 29, 2014 -> 03:09 PM) I'm just curious as to how Shields is a better option than Jimenez would have been. To answer your question, aside from track records, whether or not Shields makes sense depends on how the Sox development goes this year. If we're at essentially the same point next year that we are right now, then Shields makes as little sense as Jimenez (very little).
  6. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Mar 28, 2014 -> 02:37 PM) The fastest way to contend is to find a top-of-the-rotation starter. Yeah, just ask the 2007 Giants.
  7. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Mar 28, 2014 -> 02:15 AM) Recent Sox history tells us differently. Win games and make the playoffs or be ignored I don't think we've been in a position like this since the 90s
  8. Just saw the Abreu jack -- MAN does he have some plate coverage!
  9. I suppose it has something to do with this: http://articles.latimes.com/2012/nov/02/sp...oulder-20121102 Maybe they just thought his 2013 results were an accurate representation of his health.
  10. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Mar 26, 2014 -> 03:38 PM) There's no law against releasing him. There's also no law against signing him to a 10 year, $200M extension! Let's do all the things there aren't laws against! Excellent explanation of your position, sir.
  11. Anybody know more about what happened to him last year and how he ended up slipping through the whole NL on waivers?
  12. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Mar 26, 2014 -> 03:28 PM) Hope Veal is shown the door. Me too. He's a righty though. So unless they feel the same way I do and don't give a crap how many lefties we have in the pen this year, I bet not.
  13. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Mar 26, 2014 -> 02:38 PM) If he had signed somewhere else for $68.5M you know this board would be more than ok with it. $13M a year for a 27 y.o. 1B goes against a lot of what I've seen written on this board about how to best allocate financial resources. Name a comparable player that this board has said no to. Please note that neither Pitcher S nor Pitcher J are REMOTELY similar to Abreu in age, talent costs, controllability or projected performance.
  14. I know Marty has been a consistent contrarian for a while now, but was he staunchly against the Dunn signing at the time? Not playing it down the middle? Because he's sure been harping on it for a while, as though it's evidence of something.
  15. We don't have the bullpen to ACTUALLY win games. Which is fine, no need to pour unnecessary resources into the bullpen for a team not designed to go deep. But even if we were capable of .500 I think the bullpen will keep us from it. At least as things stand today.
  16. Everyone looks like a Reinsdorf apologist when arguing with irrational Reinsdorf rants.
  17. Question: when you trade for a guy you got through the Rule V draft, what are you then allowed to do with them? How long are they allowed to be in the new team's minors before becoming eligible for the Rule V draft again?
  18. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 25, 2014 -> 03:52 PM) (I think this setup suggests that Paulino is the weakest, he's surrounded by the 2 strongest pitchers in the rotation.) But how are we gonna sweep series' with Paulino in the middle of our two best?
  19. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 25, 2014 -> 03:44 PM) In the end, it won't matter. Definitely true.
  20. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 25, 2014 -> 03:39 PM) L, R, L, R, L What's wrong with LLRLR? Breaking up the lefties equally.
  21. Of course, the order of rotation matters very little or arguably not at all, so I guess I don't really care. Just not what I would have done.
  22. QUOTE (peppers312 @ Mar 25, 2014 -> 03:33 PM) Robin Ventura has confirmed the rotation to start the season: Chris Sale, Felipe Paulino, Jose Quintana, Erik Johnson, John Danks. i really hope this is in no particular order because Paulino doesn't belong in the #2 spot. Yeah, that order makes no sense to me. I said it (in several locations) in the FB comments, but I think it should be Sale, Q, Johnson, Danks, Paulino. Gonna have two consecutive lefties no matter what, so they might as well put our best ones at the top.
  23. Sorry, what's the relevance of the exact ranking in the rotation that Q ends up as? It doesn't change the value of his contract, nor does it change your approach to the offseason.
  24. There was a time in my life when I internetted so good. I guess I'm just past my prime.
