Do you think Paulie would retire midseason?
ScottyDo replied to Buehrle>Wood's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Hawkfan @ Apr 23, 2014 -> 02:10 AM) "I'm going to sit on the bench all season" and be a cheerleader That is the role he was asked to play. Everyone in the organization made this abundantly clear. Hahn said "200 ABs for Konerko" at Soxfest. This is not an attitude problem on anyone's part. Not just referring to Hawkfan here, but what's with the emotional reaction to a fading veteran on the bench of a rebuilding team? At this point, the roster spot isn't keeping anyone out of the Bigs who should be here. -

QUOTE (Hawkfan @ Apr 23, 2014 -> 01:52 AM) Anybody who truly thinks like that, I don't want them on my team. Thinks like what? Like "I'm going to mentor some guys and show them how to prepare for a game/season properly since this is a young team"? Okay.... -

QUOTE (Hawkfan @ Apr 23, 2014 -> 01:45 AM) I don't give a s*** what he said in some stupid interview. saying so and meaning it are two very different things for a player with his competetive mindset. Getting fewer at bats was expected, but this is rediculous. It was like a 20 minute interview, he was very candid. Not your usual fluff piece. He went into great depth on his role and how he felt about it. EDIT: A quick search didn't turn it up. But I'm sure someone who listened to it can back me up. -

QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 23, 2014 -> 01:35 AM) I can't believe he signed up for this, either. Unless behind the scenes he's some great coach in waiting or something. Maybe he's coaching during the games. But I'd think his current role would be mighty boring. Although he still is making a lot of money compared to the rest of humanity. It's easy $$$ just taking batting and fielding practice. This is exactly what he signed up for, he said so himself. -

Apparently people never heard his interview on The Score. I'll find it if I can. Paulie knows he's going to get little-to-no playing time and his primary role is mentorship this season. Since that's what he willingly and knowingly signed up for, I'm sure he's feeling just fine right now. The only way I can see him retiring is if Hahn asked him to mid-season, and Hahn won't do that. -
Some positive news...Eaton could be back tmrw, or def Wed

QUOTE (Bigsoxhurt35 @ Apr 22, 2014 -> 05:52 PM) Just be patient with this. Hamstrings can nag Adam Eaton probably sprinted to his physical therapy appointments, you might have to tie him down to get him to be patient. -
Holy crap, this is a lot of apocalypse and certainty about something experts debate. Going on the DL = bad. But not THAT bad. Lots of pitchers go on the DL for short stints, turn off the car and come in from the garage, honey.

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Apr 21, 2014 -> 09:53 AM) He has to learn to take more walks. He does expand the zone . Expects way too many fastballs and looks to turn on them and has been outguessed a lot. Likes to extend his arms on the outerhalf of the plate and even outside the zone pitches away and up. Has looked better lately laying off the inside pitches. Have to be strikes to swing at those otherwise you get the weak grounders . Hge adjustment from Cuban league to ML but the guy can rake . He's very professional and mature so he should adjust well. This is probably true, although his BB% is almost identical to Miggy's and he is in the top 80 in baseball in that stat, so not terrible. But when he's right, it really seems like he can tell a ball from a strike, maybe better than anyone on the team. Not sure I have objective evidence of this, but it looks like he is capable of laying off the bad stuff, which will really help reel the pitcher in if he can consistently practice patience.

I think it's too early to make a call on Abreu's defense one way or the other. This ain't Cienfuegos, after all. The standards are different.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 21, 2014 -> 12:02 AM) I think if you are a true Sox fan you should give a warm round of applause in recognition of Danks today. That home run he hit was a true bomb. It banged off the facade in the upper deck, kind of like a South Side Hit Man home run when the ball was juiced that one year. A rocket!!! Yeah that was a pretty monstrous shot. It'd be nice if some of his AAAA-seeming power could translate to the bigs.

QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Apr 20, 2014 -> 09:32 PM) Abreu= PK Avi= Dye Davidson= Crede (hopefully) Alexei= Uribe Eaton= Pods Sale= Buehrle Jones= Cotts Pretty good foundation if you ask me...mix that with some FAs and Hawkins, maybe Thompson, Chris Beck, Micah Johnson, and guys like Zapata, high ranked international FAs (seems realistic with Paddy and going after Abreu and Tanaka) and our #3 draft pick and that may be a short lived dynasty or at the least very exciting SouthSide ball I am gonna go ahead and say maybe two thirds of these things actually pan out that way (or similarly). Then you have the rest of the roster to worry about. Basically, I will be shocked if they actually contend for the WS title next year. Not saying they won't be decent-to-good, but we're not even sure what we have in our 2014 youngsters, let alone projecting down the line.

QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Apr 20, 2014 -> 11:01 PM) Yeah, that's right. Briefly flicked away and missed the throwing error. Still, the run scored due to the wild pitch, so not a blameless unearned run for Johnson. Definitely. He should (and I think does) feel pretty lucky after today. I hope he doesn't take it too hard, but works with Coop a bunch on control and repeatability. Seems like his release point is all over the place, to my amateur eyes.

QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Apr 20, 2014 -> 10:57 PM) Just looking at his advanced fielding stats, they have him killing it at SS and 3B, but pretty damn bad at 2B. Any theories on this or is it solely sample size? I've been told by people here who know way more than me that defensive metrics, as they currently stand, generally need 1.5 to 2 seasons to yield a reliable number (and even that's debatable). Specifically, UZR.

Not a super encouraging start by EJ, but he's young and this is often what you get with young pitchers. QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Apr 20, 2014 -> 10:31 PM) He walked 5, and only 1 run was earned because of his own wild pitch. The end result was good but he did not pitch well. Still, the rest of the season he's pitched better than his end results, so we'll take it. Hopefully he's scuffling a little bit because of his drop in velo and it comes back and he looks like 2013 MiLB Erik Johnson. I would say it's fairly encouraging he can put up a 3.49 FIP after losing 2-3 mph. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that run was unearned because of Flowers' throwing error, not Johnson's wild pitch. I'm pretty sure the run is still earned if someone scores on a wild pitch.

Real nice form by Semien on that one

QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Apr 20, 2014 -> 05:15 PM) Weird, pen not too far removed from several heavy outings, 6-run lead. And also on paper one of the better pen arms (poor start notwithstanding) throwing in a really low-leverage situation. I think poor start should withstand in this case...he's been both supremely hittable and wild so he's not a high leverage guy until he gets his act together. However...taking EJ out right now? I don't get it at all. Maybe he's mildly injured?
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 20, 2014 -> 05:07 PM) Got a little too cute walking Danks. Semien crushed it. Good thing Balta wasn't managing again because Semien wouldn't have been leading off. Oh, you guys
-
This season is bizarre so far.
-
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Apr 20, 2014 -> 05:01 PM) Ya he really has. Crazy. And this time he's got injury added to insult
-
Hmm....okay.
-
I guess I'm missing something. The ball clearly hit SOMETHING. So even if he swung it would have to be a foul ball, would it not? Under what interpretation of a rule can a ball hit something and be a swing-and-miss?
-
Whaaaat the crap is going on...are they saying he...like...leaned into the pitch? Like Crede in Baltimore several years ago?
-
wtf is going on right now? if he wasn't hit, it was an uncaught foul ball.....what?

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 20, 2014 -> 04:16 PM) Impact free-agents are out of the Sox price range so I don't know what we are saving the financial flexibility for and there's not a lot of help coming from the farm anytime soon. If you don't spend needless dollars now, this is untrue.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 20, 2014 -> 01:09 PM) If the Sox are successful in the least, signing a guy like Santana will cost a first round pick. It is funny how Jimenez's start is mentioned a lot, but no one mentions Santana. If your goal is not to have the best pitching staff, just some run of the mill 4th or 5th starter, there is a lot on that list to at least have some interest. If your goal is World Series, the guys on that list that you really would be interested in are going to cost close to 9 figures, if not 9 figures. Are you talking about World Series 2015 or World Series 2016-2018? Because that's probably what we're looking at here, optimistically.
