God, Ventura is blowing this! Edited for greenness.
-
This whole conversation is ridiculous. I'd like to see anyone manage this bullpen "well". What do you imagine it would look like? Is Webb gonna get 300 innings this season?
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 17, 2014 -> 01:08 PM) One thing that killed the Sox last night was the inability to turn double plays in the 8th and 11th. Gillaspie lobbing the ball to Semien instead of leading him prevented the Sox from keeping a 3-1 lead in the 8th, and then not being able to turn the DP on Ortiz in the 11th seemed strange. I thought the same thing until I saw that Semien was not that close to the base when Gillaspie threw it. I think a lob was close to his only safe play. He might have been able to throw it a little harder but not a ton.

QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 17, 2014 -> 03:39 PM) I have no problem with him removing those guys...the bigger problem I had was why was it those guys in and not Webb or Lindstrom? I mean, you'd think you'd be able to turn to SOMEONE that is not them to do something in the 8th. You can't go with one of them every single high-leverage situation, particularly not in a close game where the leverage might only increase in the next inning. Also, I wouldn't even really put Lindstrom on the list of somewhat reliable pitchers in tough spots. It's really just Webb. If Downs gets an F so far, Lindstrom gets a D-

I am just fine with his management of the 8th. You have to send the message that you're not going to tolerate relievers coming in and walking people. You would think that, as you flipped through the rolodex, SOMEONE would HAPPEN to not suck...but it didn't. That says much more about the bullpen than Robin. I am totally in favor of him putting his foot down, even if it costs us a game. Accountability has to come from the manager at this point.
-
I actually APPROVE of the way Robin used the bullpen yesterday. It was about time he sent a message to the bullpen about throwing strikes, so he pulled people whenever they walked someone even if that was early. The fact that he burned through the entire bullpen that way just indicates that everyone in our bullpen is god awful right now. I also don't think he needed to use Webb right away. Everyone needs to pull their weight in high leverage situations at some point. SOMEONE besides Webb should be able to do it. You have to try at some point. That was 100% on the bullpen's inability to throw strikes. If you wanna throw stones, throw them at Hahn or Coop for this one, IMO.

I think someone posted this a couple of months ago, citing it as evidence that AJ was a "class act".

Haha ok is know this whole thread should be green, but for real if Dunn puts up a .900+ OPS ALL YEAR, 2/3rds of you guys will be singing a very different tune. OF COURSE you give him a QO if he does that consistently in 2014, are you guys for real? I don't think he will, and I think and hope he'll be traded, but come on now...

QUOTE (sin city sox fan @ Apr 16, 2014 -> 02:28 AM) It appears that Adam is back and will be a key component to our playoff push in 2014. I'm wondering if we should negotiate a new deal now before he posts a 35 HR / 100 RBI season and drives his asking rate through the roof. I'm thinking that Hahn should offer a deal now for about 4 years / $28 million and see if we can get him locked in at an affordable rate. Whats everyone else think? TUC isn't here right now, but he told me he wholeheartedly approves of your plan. But he used a lot more words and paragraphs, and with a lot more hyperbole.
-
Semien definitely went on the 2-2, no question. I can understand not calling it in real time (especially if you're an ump and you want the game to end) though.
-
Hahahahahaha what the crap! Not sure what was weirder, the play or Hawk using his home run call on a ball dropped by the 1b. Or the fact that Hawk called this game "beautiful".
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 15, 2014 -> 11:27 PM) ADA should just swing hard 3 times and hope he hits a homer. So stay the course, you're saying?
-
Woah, finger's not supposed to go that way
-
Woah now guys, it's a night of Pesach miracles (I know it's after sundown but whatever). Maybe it will extend to all our lefties out of the pen.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 15, 2014 -> 10:44 PM) Sox seem to be very passive on the bases this year. Between this and the shifts, makes me think the Sox are taking the "not wasting outs" thing pretty seriously this year. EDIT: Plus the renewed patience
-
QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Apr 15, 2014 -> 10:36 PM) I'd rather look at line drive percentage. BABIP can be deceiving if you think it's unlucky if the guy is popping everything up , or routine fly balls or weak ground outs. A lousy BABIP sometimes means its just that lousy hitting. Right. I promise you I would have a .000 BABIP, if I could get the ball in play
-
IT'S A MIRACLE!!! HAPPY PESACH, EVERYONE!!
-
Well, it was a nice try, EJ. Sorry about the loss whichever lefty's coming is about to hang on you.
-
I didn't get to see EJ much last year. Is this pretty much how he looked? Fastball relatively flat in the low 90's, lots of speed variation with moderate control?
-
QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Apr 15, 2014 -> 02:53 PM) Beckham "upping his trade value" is such a ridiculous notion. why, exactly? He's widely viewed as a good-to-great defensive guy with offensive talent who hasn't unlocked it, so if he started off hot someone would trade for him for sure. Everyone thinks they can "fix" guys like him. We wouldn't get a haul or anything, but from a contending team that needs defense and the potential for offense at 2b, you could get non-zero value.
-
QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 14, 2014 -> 07:26 PM) Well yeah. To be fair, part of the reason he has 1.2 IP is because he can't get outs. EDIT: He has played in 5 games. Obviously that's still not enough to make a determination. But 1.2 IP in 5 appearances is pretty dreadful no matter what his ERA is.
-
QUOTE (iamshack @ Apr 14, 2014 -> 09:43 PM) Despite his flaws, I really think you guys are selling Ale short. I dunno, is saying he's a tradeable asset selling him short? He's definitely an MLB player, he just doesn't really fit the long-term plan, IMO.

Trevor Cahill might be a pitcher to trade for

QUOTE (chw42 @ Apr 14, 2014 -> 01:01 PM) Our infield's not bad. Alexei's above average. Gillaspie's around average. Semien's decent. I know errors aren't the best measure in the world, but 11 of our league-leading 13 errors have come from the infield. -

QUOTE (chw42 @ Apr 14, 2014 -> 12:23 PM) Cahill wouldn't be a bad guy to have. He's an extreme GB pitcher. With a good infield like he had in Oakland, he could be a very good pitcher. Sooo, not with the Chicago White Sox -

We're not talking about giving up players with upside at this point, are we? I mean, I know we're 7-6 but we're not all of the sudden rolling in talent here. I'd rather roll with what we've got than make any trades at this point, unless we're talking about trading Alexei/De Aza.
