  1. QUOTE (chisoxfan09 @ May 9, 2010 -> 02:41 AM) Who is struggling more, Beckham or Quentin? Beckham's struggling more, but I have greater confidence in his ability to rebound. But enough about basketball...
  2. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 7, 2010 -> 11:38 PM) Teahen, Kotsay, Ramon Castro, Vizquel and Juan Pierre=$24.7 million Aroldis Chapman for FIVE years (plus option for sixth)=$30 milllion Future for Reds=exciting Future for White Sox=not so exciting are you suggesting we should have focused more on SP this offseason?
  3. QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ May 6, 2010 -> 07:52 PM) Lol - he's in the middle of a pack whose combined on-base % is .313. So the story here isn't that Teahen's particularly good at getting on base. It's that, sadly, many of his teammates have been quite dreadful at getting on themselves thus far in the early going. exactly. there are others whose heads should be on the chopping block before his, for the reason you just mentioned. he's just a fun scapegoat for whatever reason.
  4. QUOTE (Heads22 @ May 6, 2010 -> 06:29 PM) Donny Lucy has 4 XBH this year (3 2B, 1 HR) in 7 G (18 PA). Juan Pierre has 0 XBH this year in 27 G (118 PA). You have to go back another 28 games in 09 to find his last double (August 18, 2009). He had 3 triples last September, but no doubles or HR. Bad stuff. Still, he ends up on 2b fairly frequently.
  5. QUOTE (SoxAce @ May 6, 2010 -> 04:46 PM) I had a dream yesterday that Juan Pierre hit a XBH for us. don't worry, it was just a dream. armageddon isn't nigh. that i know of. i miss donny lucy already
  6. QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ May 6, 2010 -> 04:39 PM) What do good on-base % and Mark Teahen have to do with one another? it's not so much that teahen is a great OBP guy, it's that we can't afford to lose what little we have. like someone else mentioned, he's 4th on the team. well, 5th if you include donny lucy who's leading the team.
  7. QUOTE (bmags @ May 6, 2010 -> 11:34 AM) we. lack. o.b.p. yet we need to cut mark teahen according to some.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 6, 2010 -> 10:08 AM) We're also leading the league in stolen bases. I thought that was small ball. that's part of small ball. there are many other parts that we have sucked donkey hoofs at. point taken, though: what we've really lacked is overall hitting, not small ball or long ball.
  9. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ May 5, 2010 -> 06:52 PM) Reading the article makes one realize it is a stretch, but I would welcome J Dye back on this team. What he said rings very true "small ball in nice, but you need a balance" plus he can play 3 positions minimum for the Sox. We need another bat! the balance we lack so far is that we haven't played good small ball. we haven't suffered for power, as we are 2nd in the AL in homers. dye doesn't fix a problem that we have.
  10. pierre was a big factor in that series. when he's going well, good things can happen. we'll never be amazing, and he'll never be a destructive leadoff force, but the reason you have someone like him on the team is because his realized potential has value like this. im drunk. happy cinco de mayo! i mean feliz...
  11. QUOTE (iamshack @ May 4, 2010 -> 10:49 PM) Maybe so, but I love the Hawkeroo....there is something about having someone up there that you feel is going through the same s*** as you...a lot more people are going to miss him when he's gone...and then he will become legendary. I love the guy, I really do. I love that he can't contain himself when good things happen to the organization. I also love Southpaw.
  12. QUOTE (chw42 @ May 4, 2010 -> 10:44 PM) He was talking about how the KC bullpen was bad. What Hawk says makes absolutely no sense to me most of the time. Really, I consider him more of a mascot than an announcer. In fact, he rivals Southpaw. If Hawk were fuzzier, greener, and a better dancer, I'd say we should just consolidate the two jobs.
  13. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ May 4, 2010 -> 10:42 PM) Hawk "Your offense is only as good as your bullpen." ? Maybe thats our problem. The middle relievers have been wearing the offense's unis and have been hitting for them. Hahaha that is a truly bizarre thing to say. I have my TV muted (stupid organic chemistry tests...); why did he say that?
  14. gavin "houdini" floyd. nobody punch him in the liver.
  15. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ May 4, 2010 -> 02:07 PM) I know i'm his biggest supporter on this board, but i think people are a bit to eager to slag off on the guy for things that aren't his fault. He's been perfectly fine at 3b, even despite never playing their prior to last year. I'm with you on Nix's defense. I even think he could be a pretty serviceable daily player, possibly, but he's a riskier play than Teahen is. And it's not really relevant in this conversation because we CANNOT field a team whose only LH bats are Pierre and Pierzynski.
  16. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ May 4, 2010 -> 01:41 PM) How the hell was Nix a disaster at 3b? He graded and looked just fine at 3b, he was a disaster at SS. He looked REAAAAAAAALLY bad there in spring training. Not relevant necessarily, but I think that's where the perception comes from.
  17. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 3, 2010 -> 07:43 PM) This is true. How much better of a ballplayer is Mark Teahen than a guy like Geoff Blum? Is he 3 times the player? Blum has never made more than $1.5 million in a season. The White Sox inexplicably guaranteed Teahen $15 million. I think we all know that pay scale doesn't progress in a linear fashion. You pay large sums of money for just incremental value. Teahen may not be "three times as good" as Blum, but Blum IS below average whereas Teahen is average. Average ML salary is between $3 and $4M. By that standard, Teahen might be slightly overpaid, but mean dollar value is also not a great number to use here. I pulled it out of my butt. Point is, why are we bashing Teahen's brains in by saying things like "Nix is a better option"? That's totally excessive. Teahen is AT MOST a tiny, tiny concern. Sure, if we could get an upgrade at 3B, that would be great, but 3B has just a tiny bit more talent than 2B around MLB at the moment, and that ain't much. Here's a brief list of ML 3B's who are not outperforming Teahen by a notable degree: Brandon Wood Pedro Feliz Kevin Kouzmanoff Jose Bautista Chipper Jones Aramis Ramirez Casey Blake Jhonny Peralta Jose Lopez Michael Young Brandon Inge The Minnesota Twins So quitcher whinin'!
  18. I thought this guy was the new Steve Perry:
  19. QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ May 3, 2010 -> 03:48 PM) Bingo! I think that is ultimate answer with Teahen - utility guy off the bench, and not just necessarily for the Yankees. I don't think he should be a starter at the Major League level, period. He is below average offensively and defensively and has proven so pretty much throughout his entire career. The one quality he does bring to the table, though, is versatility. And the last time I checked, versatility was an attribute considered to be quite valuable for someone coming off of the bench. In Teahen's case, you can theoretically run him out to five positions on the playing field. And even though he isn't particularly good defensively at any one of those positions, in short stints that kind of versatility could come in quite handy for a manager over a long season. Additionally, as is the case with so many good bench players out there, they seem to hit better in limited action vs. having their weaknesses exposed as a full-time player. So to me, Teahen would be acceptable as a super sub, but as a regular player, I just don't think he cuts it - ESPECIALLY in a line-up that also frequently features the names Pierre, Vizquel, and Kotsay along with Teahen's. Is he, now? I think people throw around the word "average" too much, possibly taking it to mean "what I find acceptable". Without getting into more advanced statistics, average is about a .750 OPS. Teahen's career OPS is .750. He's pretty much the poster boy for average offense, though, as has been noted before, he's played in Loserville his entire career. I mean, clearly this is a lukewarm defense of the guy, but let's not mischaracterize him as a bum offensively.
  20. Now, I'm not a huge believer in BABIP for various reasons, but.... They need to have a BABIP over ML-worst .226. I mean that's just an insanely low number, and indicates to me that our offense is not as bad as it looks. Sticking with the luck theme, the Tigers need to not have a ML-leading .332 BABIP. That would be nice.
  21. QUOTE (chw42 @ Apr 26, 2010 -> 07:32 PM) Omar was too lame for Andruw to high five him. I think Andruw was afraid he'd somehow break Omar's hip
  22. QUOTE (qwerty @ Apr 26, 2010 -> 04:28 PM) They only had two sweeps last season. The first was against the royals at kaufman on bewtween may 29th and may 31st. The second sweep was exactly a month later (in the midst of a seven game win streak)... june 29th through june 31st against the indians at progressive field. Their last sweep at home dates back until 2008. In 2008 they swept a double header against the tigers on september 14th at home. The last three game sweep at home was against the mariners on august 18th through august 20th. what are we doing going to texas? let's keep playing the M's!
  23. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 26, 2010 -> 12:53 PM) IIRC, Wilson was the closer and he came in a 4-run game, the Sox cut the lead to a run and had runners on. He struck someone out to end it, and started yelling at Ozzie or something like that, acting like a bad-ass, even though he almost blew it. I do remember them showing up to the South Side a few weeks later, and TCQ hit a 3-run bomb off him in the 8th to win a game. That's how I recall it too. Wilson was acting like a complete fool, showing up the losing team after a bad performance himself. Vengeance is sweet, though.
  24. QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ Apr 26, 2010 -> 01:00 PM) So about 1 mil to each team... Cubs-White Sox series to have its own trophy Posted by Ed S. at 4/26/2010 9:30 AM CDT on Chicago Business The annual White Sox-Cubs series now will have a trophy attached to it. Both teams, though, will win by walking away with more than $1 million in a unique sponsorship deal, according to a top sports marketing consultant. The teams announced this morning that the winner of the six-game series will receive the BP Crosstown Cup. This follows the college football tradition of traveling trophies such as Little Brown Jug (Michigan-Minnesota), Old Oaken Bucket (Purdue-Indiana), Illibuck (Illinois-Ohio State), and the ever-popular Floyd of Rosedale (Iowa-Minnesota). The teams obviously want to add more spice to what already is an intense series. The winner of the most games will be awarded the Crosstown Cup in a trophy presentation following the final game. If the annual series is split 3-3, the Cup will be awarded to the winner of the series' last game. It is a creative idea, ensuring the losing team's fans will make a beeline for the exits prior to the trophy presentation. However, this unique partnership between the two teams is about more than a trophy. There are sponsorship dollars here, and BP will be paying a premium. Marc Ganis, president of Chicago-based SportsCorp, said both teams will receive in excess of $1 million in the deal. BP will have several promotions surrounding the Crosstown Cup. The company will be the presenting sponsor through the 2012 season. "It's an additional revenue source for the teams," Mr. Ganis said. "It's also a way of promoting the teams even more when all the activation is done by BP. This is the kind of sponsorship arrangement that has benefits across the board, including those for fans." Here are the statements from the big guys in the release: “Cubs and Sox fans have always been passionate about this rivalry. The BP Crosstown Cup recognizes the excitement of winning the crosstown series,” said Chicago Cubs Executive Chairman Tom Ricketts said. “In addition to bragging rights, fans will have a chance to win prizes through this promotion, which will make the series even more fun.” “Thanks to Chicago’s baseball fans, this city is such a passionate baseball town, particularly when it comes to the White Sox vs. Cubs in interleague play,” Chicago White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf said. “We think the creation of the Crosstown Cup, made possible through this unique, two-team, one-city partnership with our friends at BP, will elevate Chicago’s summer baseball rivalry to a new level for fans on both sides of town.” What do you think? Is this a good idea? Woo! That's 2 Andruw Joneses!
  25. QUOTE (SHIPPS @ Apr 26, 2010 -> 11:47 AM) CQ will be back to the ol' TCQ in Texas....book it. Injured? How dare you!
