4/5/10 Opening day IGT. White Sox vs. Cleveland Indians

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Apr 5, 2010 -> 01:53 AM) I just noticed 67 degrees... That isn't very cold at all, so I expect a big day for Alexei. Fidel Castro banned 70 degrees and below from Cuba. Even for refrigerators. -

Okay i'm watching the Sox/Yanks and it's decided: I'm skipping all my classes (I have class from 1-4). The question is: how do I avoid failing my mandatory class? It will take some squirming but I have confidence in my bulls***ing abilities. The Sox are just worth sacrificing for, especially this season -

QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 4, 2010 -> 11:24 PM) I have seen the future, and in 16 hours the Sox will be up 3-0 in the first inning on a 3 -run homer by Alex Rios. I don't think that math works. Unless someone gets injured and Rios has to move up in the lineup. -
QUOTE (Chisoxrd5 @ Apr 4, 2010 -> 04:53 PM) A working chat server might just be the driving influence to bring me back from the dead. Is that an Easter reference?

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Apr 4, 2010 -> 02:28 PM) No offense, Scotty, but why not wait till a month into the season till we tell people not to jump to conclusions based on quotes from the mouth of the manager? I think if Ozzie was gonna ride Kotsay's hot hand and put him in the 3-hole, he'd do it right out of his blistering spring training. Maybe I'm wrong. -

Per InsideTheSox twitter, opening day lineup will be as follows: 1. Pierre - LF 2. Beckham - 2B 3. Quentin - RF 4. Konerko - 1B 5. Kotsay - DH 6. Rios - CF 7. Pierzynski - C 8. Teahen - 3B 9. Ramirez - SS See, Kotsay's not batting 3rd. Why don't you step back from that ledge, my friend. -

QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Apr 3, 2010 -> 05:27 PM) Ohhhhh, I get it! I doubt it though. I bet it's Lucy. Anyway, time to drop Castro from my fantasy team! /green -
Farewell, spring training, you shan't be missed!

QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Apr 3, 2010 -> 12:59 PM) Thats how the top CF's are though, for example many considered Brian Anderson one of the best defensive CF's in mlb but how many times did it look like he made a real hard play. When your good, the hard plays look easy I guess I framed it wrong, I know it's not really about diving/sliding/whatever, but I just haven't seen him get to a gapper and cut it off or catch a ball particularly far into the alleys. I dunno, I'm slightly underwhelmed. Small sample size, though.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Apr 2, 2010 -> 11:42 PM) Aside from that first half of '06 he paled in comparison to Jones. It's silly to proclaim him the best defensive CF on the team when the last time we got even a decent sample of him in CF he was just average and now he's 33 but it's certainly not plausible given his incredible abilities. It's just going to take a little time before it can be said definitively. Oh I'm by no means claiming BA could sniff Jones in his prime. But to say we haven't seen a CF like the current rendition of Jones in decades....I'm not sure about that. BA had good instincts, he's just known for one diving catch. Whereas it's too soon to make a judgment on Jones' play, I have seen a couple balls drop at his feet that he may have been able to get. I'm not an outfielder, I don't know, I'm just going on my extremely limited scouting abilities.
-
I dunno, I thought BA was a pretty damn good defensive CF...
-
Am I the only one who hasn't seen a reason to laud Jones' defense in CF this spring? I don't think he's hurting us necessarily, but I have yet to see him dive, slide, or anything else remotely challenging. EDIT: Is that the type of thing you don't do in the spring or something, for fear of injuring yourself? You'd think he'd show it at least once if he's trying to win a job in the field...

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Apr 2, 2010 -> 09:00 PM) He said at the "very least" they're right up there with the Red Sox and Yankees. That's a pretty fair assessment to me. And there's really no more excuses to have to turn to ESPN for your baseball fix anymore. MLB network >>> ESPN. But in this case, the Boston writer was being more than fair. My DirecTV box is pretty much always tuned to MLB network. I am a happy panda.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Apr 2, 2010 -> 05:04 PM) No, Jones is our DH, but he has actually played a pretty good OF this spring. He could probably play CF without hurting us. I would personally like to see a Pierre-Jones-Rios OF with Quentin DHing. Somewhat (very?) off topic, but has anyone seen Jones make any tough plays this spring? I haven't, but I've only seen a handful of games. Has he been tested enough to give him a good evaluation?

Well maybe it's just me who perceived it this way, but when he said at the end "I think the White Sox pitching is up there with the Yankees and Boston," that kind of annoyed me. He picked us 2nd for starting staff, 1st for bullpen, yet we're approaching the big bad Yankees and Red Sox? If anything, they're approaching us, according to his analysis. Since nobody else seemed to be annoyed by that, it's entirely possible that their long-time bias has simply biased me against ESPN and I have a mental block on accepting compliments from them.

QUOTE (bdt91680 @ Apr 2, 2010 -> 12:11 PM) I agree that it was very important and changed the alcs, but I just think there are a couple other big moments they could have put at #2 rather than the dropped 3rd strike. Didn't they follow it up with crede's double off the wall as the #2 "moment"? if they're talking about the whole inning, i can agree. if it's just dropped 3rd strike, you're right, that's a pretty lame #2 moment. Especially because of the immense confusion surrounding it as a fan, the moment can't really stick out that well.
-
QUOTE (bdt91680 @ Apr 2, 2010 -> 11:55 AM) I agree with you, AJ's drop 3rd strike was not the #2 moment in Sox history...having that as #2 is just pathetic. I can see that whole game making the list though. When I look back at my fondest memories, that inning ranks pretty high up there.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Apr 2, 2010 -> 11:28 AM) It's hard not to feel optimistic about a team whose manager was quoted on April 1 as saying, "he could use Vizquel or Juan Pierre occasionally at DH this season,"and was not joking. Vizquel I get, but why WOULDN'T we want Pierre at DH if his fielding replacement is Rios/Jones?
-
Even while giving us love, they're pretty apologetic about it. I really can't tolerate the bias on ESPN anymore so I just don't watch. Ever.
