  1. While the Hawks season has circled the drain, it is now prospect time. Sounds like Sikura could debut tomorrow, as well as the new goalie. 670 The Score?Verified account @670TheScore 4m4 minutes ago Blackhawks recall goalie Collin Delia, assign goalie J-F Berube to Rockford
  2. I haven't heard Beer's name in forever. What is his status these days?
  3. QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 28, 2018 -> 11:44 AM) What is a white sox guy at this point? Seems like we've gone big on statcast schools. We have been avoiding players with big athletic tools that lacked hitting polish. But that's a last 2 years trend. And last year all "trends" were pointing to us and Jerren Kendall. We grabbed Burger and then a bunch of good contact/power guys with little positional versatility and then college relievers. I could see madrigal fitting into this "best hitter available" mold we've ridden with, or this year we go big with athleticism to round out our minors (in both pitcher and hitter build) That is a great question. It really has changed so much from year to year in the last few years.
  4. Much like Michael Kopech last year, he needs to get to 150 innings before we start talking about him being a major leaguer.
  5. QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 28, 2018 -> 10:29 AM) I'm not that surprised by Charlotte. I think they want to avoid being forced to press up a future prospect, so they want filler guys like Volstad available for spot starts. Am surprised that they put Clarkin at AA and not Dunning. That said I bet it shakes out fairly quickly. They may have told him to get more under control while he pitches and purposely disappointed him to see how he handles. Where is adolfo? DH in W-S? I'm not against challenging Rutherford. I think he was too complacent about his failure last year and they want to show him that everything is advancing around him. Disappointed about curbelo but i bet it shakes out fairly quickly. I also think they want our catchers to be familiar with these more likely future pitchers in AA. ANd set up a AA team that can have some on field success. They also seem to have adopted the philosophy of keeping kids together where ever they can.
  6. QUOTE (TheTruth05 @ Mar 28, 2018 -> 10:35 AM) Cordell I think. If we are talking about all of the system, my pick would be either Cordell or RP.
  7. I think Jimenez isn't up until September at least. Kopech will be up first for sure.
  8. Surprise: Adam Engel hits a respectable number and shows some power Disappointment: Lucas Giolitto, some redflags in his numbers last year Dark Horse: I know it isn't a major leaguer, but this is the year that the Latin American program starts to see some movement up the rankings lists.
  9. I am not sure who posted this on the temp board, but this is good stuff so I am copy/pasting it over here: There was a conference call yesterday with Chris Getz and FutureSox tweeted out some of the news: AAA: Kopech will obviously be in this rotation. No other big prospects in this rotation to start the season (see AA comments). AA: Stephens, Adams, Guerrero, Puckett, & Clarkin will start the season in the rotation. Hansen will join the staff once he finishes his throwing program (timing TBD). Jimenez, Collins, & Zavala will be there on the positional side. A+: Dunning will start 2018 in this rotation. The OF to start the season will be Rutherford, Basabe, Call, & Booker. Robert will start start his season here when healthy and be the primary CF. Extended: Curbelo will start 2018 here to get regular at-bats.
  10. This is the highpoint of the season.
  11. Daryl Van Schouwen‏Verified account @CST_soxvan 20m20 minutes ago Luis Robert said he felt "relaxed and comfortable at the plate." Relaxed and comfortable is how he's looked these first 2 weeks of camp -- at the plate, in the field, on the bases, in the clubhouse.

  17. QUOTE (Two-Gun Pete @ Mar 1, 2018 -> 12:08 PM) Actually, I brought it up in post #38, & not since then. (Double-checking, & there's no mention by me in either post #49, nor in post #54; I see where you've not only mentioned it twice, but you found several references to defend Engel at all costs.) Since post #38, I've agreed with you where I can. But since it appears you want a message board "win," here: Let's even ASSUME that Engel is the best defender, EVAR! Do you think he'll hit enough to not be a negative to his team mates? His hit tool has always been the primary red flag, as has been stated in pretty much every post about Engel. Again, not sure what groundbreaking we are doing here.
  18. QUOTE (Two-Gun Pete @ Mar 1, 2018 -> 11:42 AM) And I've already conceded that a partial year DRS is an imperfect measure. However, it isn't a positive sign for him. But, you're focusing on the less-important part of my view, which DA states pretty well: In an offensively-favorable environment in 2017, Engels WRC+ was 37. That's NL middle reliever-type offensive production. IF he DOUBLED his offensive output to a WRC+ of (snicker) 74, he'd still be a net negative to the team. IMO, if he gets the nod to start the season, Id give him a short leash, say some ~100 or so PA to prove his bat. But I think it would be better for Engel (and the org) for him to help Kopech, et. Al in Charlotte, while he tries to improve his bat in AAA. You say you have conceded it, yet you keep bringing up as a vital measure, which means you really haven't.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 1, 2018 -> 11:13 AM) A -1 DRS in 97 games of a rookie season when all other evidence points to the contrary is exactly what should be ignored, especially under the circumstances of the way the season played out. You also might want to read this note on how to use DRS.
  20. QUOTE (Two-Gun Pete @ Mar 1, 2018 -> 11:10 AM) No doubt. But, the existence of negative evidence regarding Engels defense can't be ignored, IMO. I simply don't take as gospel that he's a great defender, and yes, he definitely passes the eye test. But is his glove enough to exclude other candidates? I don't think so. I'll never doubt that CF is a primarily defensive position. But, how does it help Giolito or Lopez to be constantly under duress, knowing his team mates may not back him offensively? How hard is it on a kid to have to be "perfect," or else he'll lose 3-0 every game, Quintana-style? I'm NOT suggesting that Engel or whoever is in CF has to be a big offensive threat. I'm merely suggesting that he CAN'T be a net negative to the team via utter offensive incompetence. A -1 DRS in 97 games of a rookie season when all other evidence points to the contrary is exactly what should be ignored, especially under the circumstances of the way the season played out.
  21. QUOTE (wrathofhahn @ Mar 1, 2018 -> 11:03 AM) You keep talking about his 5 million "extra year" of control like it's some sort of boon. Was it? And yes soft tossing lefties who can get tough LHB out still have value but Swarzak was a legit setup man. That's waaay more valuable or at least it was this offseason when both were free agents. One signed for 1/2.35 million. The other 2/14. Did you learn nothing of player valuations through the rebuild so far? Control is worth prospects.
  22. QUOTE (Two-Gun Pete @ Mar 1, 2018 -> 09:57 AM) I don't get why some posters over here fall all over themselves to overlook all of Engels clear flaws, while other CF candidates strengths are ignored. I mean, I question Engels purported strength as a defender, given his inferior defensive metrics. (Yes, he made some highlight reel plays last year, but the fact remains that his DRS was negative last year.) At the same time, despite Engel having sucked at hitting at virtually every stop in MiLB, posters still have this insane "hope" that he'll magically start hitting in The Show. Meanwhile, Tilson and Cordell have both out hit Engel at every stop. For me, the depth chart @ CF should be: 1. Leury (better metrics in every way than Engel last season) 2. Cordell/Tilson (better bats than Engel) 3. May/Engel as injury replacements & Charlotte placeholders. Quoting carefully selected defensive metrics (while ignoring everything else) from a partial season of play is the worst sin possible when it comes to how to use these stats. It pretty much invalidates everything else.
  23. Breaking news: Weird Al is releasing a Hamilton Polka tomorrow. Commence looting.
  24. QUOTE (wrathofhahn @ Feb 28, 2018 -> 06:19 PM) When has Tilson not hit? Tilson problem isn't hitting it's a lack of power but still he could put up a 700 ish OPS with just his hitting tool alone and with his plus plus speed be a 2-3 WAR ish CF like Dyson. Also Zach Duke season at the time and just stuff in general is in no way comparable to Swarzak. Duke was left handed, with a history of being a good relief pitcher and still had a year of control. Swarzak had none of those.
  25. QUOTE (wrathofhahn @ Feb 28, 2018 -> 05:32 PM) People are delusional about Engel he was hitting 218 in AAA when he was called up. He's 26 and looks lost at the plate if he ends up being anything more then AAA fodder I'd be surprised. You are doing an awful lot of strawmanning. Literally no one has said they aren't concerned about his bat.
