2017-18 official NBA discussion thread
Mason GinsbergVerified account @MasonGinsberg 35m35 minutes ago So, here is what we "know." Someone with the Bulls leaked the Asik + 1st for Mirotic deal, then Woj reported that the Pels are balking at deal if Bulls pick up Mirotic's option. The rationale on the Pels' side is being able to afford all existing deals + Mirotic + Cousins. (1/3) It is true that these moves would push the Pels over the tax line for next season. However, it is also true that it would not be difficult to get back under it next year, OR to find another team willing to take Asik + 1st for an expiring right now. So, what can we infer? (2/3) After discussing with @42PhD, the most reasonable explanation seems to be that Demps is playing hardball - probably via Ajinca's contract, like @SilverAndMac first suggested. He knows that he is holding the truly unique asset & is milking it for as much as he possibly can. (3/3)

Indians removing Chief Wahoo
QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Jan 30, 2018 -> 03:59 PM) Native Americans are more worried about food, water, jobs, money, preventing and treating alcohol/drug addiction, etc. than names that people came up with decades and decades ago that have now become part of the general lexicon without the racist connection. However, that doesn't mean it's unreasonable for NA's to be offended or that it's the end of the world if a private company decides to make a change. I think it's unnecessary, but whatever, if they want to do it, go for it. I objected and still object to the U of I's decision to get rid of the Chief, a beloved mascot that was honored and respected, because a few select liberal professors b****ed and whined, but whatever, there's no going back. On the statue issue, I'd like to see the FDR statues/monuments removed. The dude rounded up a bunch of people and put them in camps because they looked different. In the modern era no less. How is no one talking about this? Start with Andrew Jackson if you want to talk Indian issues. And that dude is on our currency.

2017-18 official NBA discussion thread
QUOTE (shipps @ Jan 30, 2018 -> 03:12 PM) So the Pelicans only wanted him for this year and not for next year? If you like him for this year why not next if you are them? It would put them over the luxury tax number for next year, and they want the option to walk away if Cousins walks next year. Plus Niko would give up his bird rights.

Cumulus Media trying to drop White Sox/Bulls from WLS
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jan 30, 2018 -> 02:35 PM) Yeah that seems like a pretty specific condition to the deal. Technically broadcasters are employees of the station the games are on, and not of the team the broadcast about. It is plausible that WGN doesn't want to hire Ed Farmer for some reason.

QUOTE (2005thxfrthmmrs @ Jan 30, 2018 -> 01:34 PM) I am not going to lose sleep over it. I would think they can trade Niko for a mid 1st round pick without taking THAT much future money back. I mean we know what a mid 2nd round pick is worth now...

Sox expecting to open '18 with both Avi and Abreu
QUOTE (Tony @ Jan 30, 2018 -> 01:21 PM) Which was well deserved, given his production. What I take issue with is people equating "Avi hate" to the Sox possibly moving him and not locking him up to a long extension after one season of positive production, after 1,500 AB's of putting up a 0.0 WAR in his career. There are always going to be extremes on this board. In the same 24 hour period we had a poster saying he has a decent chance of being non-tendered in 2018, and a poster calling him Roberto Clemente. Removing the goofball stuff, fans don't "hate" Avi Garcia. Reasonable skepticism isn't hate. For many it crossed a line into personal.

Sox expecting to open '18 with both Avi and Abreu
QUOTE (Tony @ Jan 30, 2018 -> 12:52 PM) You don't understand it because it doesn't exist. Avi got a ton of hate up until this past season. Even now he gets more doubt per square mile than any other player on the roster.

I know we have to take on Omer, and the pick will be late first round, but I can't complain too much.

Sox expecting to open '18 with both Avi and Abreu
QUOTE (michelangelosmonkey @ Jan 30, 2018 -> 11:35 AM) I like the dream big scenario. The Zips projection lists Avi's closest comparison as Roberto Clemente. Through Roberto's first 2500 AB's he had a slash line of .285/.306/.373 and had 10 WAR over that five years. Then something clicked and he went .330/.370/.475 and averaged 6.5 over the next 13 years. Yes Roberto clicked at a younger age but Avi lost a full year to injury. Both RF's with cannon arms. I think there has been way too much negative comments about Avi when he was young and then when he had a monster year last year everyone said..."well yes but this" and "well yes but that". Not every great player comes up as Mike Trout. Why is it outlandish that Avi has found the greatness that everyone saw in him when he was 20? I sure like the idea of Jimenez, Robert, Avi outfield if Avi is Clemente. Talk about a way to speed up the rebuild...
