  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 7, 2017 -> 04:13 PM) Keenyn Walker was also a sandwich pick, equivalent to the mid 2nd round. So he shouldn't be quite lumped in with "Hawkins" as a flop. Mitchell might well have been a MLB player without injury, but ask it this way - the 25th pick in that draft was some speedy high school kid who had room to add muscle named Mike Trout. If you're avoiding athletes - that's what Trout started as. Yeah Walker was the 47th pick in is draft.
  2. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 7, 2017 -> 03:59 PM) I get the feeling that Hahn and Co. do not want to be in the business of paying a mid 30's first baseman retail money like that. The only way I would sign him to an extension is if he takes a substantial discount to stay with the White Sox. 5/90 or 4/80 is not what I would consider to be a substantial discount by any means. Abreu is not getting any younger, and giving a 33 year old Abreu three more guaranteed years is not necessarily a wise decision. Eh. Again, Abreu has the type of skill set that isn't going to die in a players early 30's. He isn't really going to lose any speed or defense because he has none of that ability anyway. His power might sap at the end of that deal, but if you look around, guys who have power plus a solid hit tool don't really age as quickly versus guys whose primary skills revolve around their legs. Guys like JD Martinez, Cabrera, Nelson Cruz, and Ed Encarnacion are doing just fine with very similar skill sets as Jose Abreu at about the same ages we are talking about during this contract.
  3. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Dec 7, 2017 -> 03:05 PM) That's what we drafted before in Courtney Hawkins, Keenyn Walker, Jared Mitchell, look at how that has turned out. Not saying I don't want great athletes in the system, but give me the good baseball player who knows how to hit a ball very well and competent on defense. We have athletes in guys like Tim Anderson and Yoan Moncada too. It is way too simplistic to just say no athletes.
  4. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 7, 2017 -> 03:06 PM) If we wants to stay with us, he may have to take a deal like that. That's kind of the whole point. Sox positon it as sign an extension now or we'll have no choice but to consider moving him. Abreu then can decide what's most important to him. And it's not like a 4/$80M is a slap in the face. He's better off long-term by waiting if he maintains his production, but if he's happy here then that's a pretty decent deal for him. This makes sense to me. Sure he might get a bigger number on the free and open market, and he knows that. But I also think that he knows right now he doesn't control his own fate because of his contract situation, and in order to convince the White Sox he wants to stay he would have to take a contract that is below market value.

  6. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 7, 2017 -> 02:47 PM) Very true. To all the "extend Abreu" advocates, you are assuming that he will accept what boils down to a two year extension. I have my doubts about that. If Abreu asked for a 5 year extension, would you give it to him? That would give me serious pause. If we are talking something in the 75 to 90 million range, I would.

  14. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 7, 2017 -> 12:22 PM) The 2 other worthy names on the market after 2019 are Justin Smoak and Paul Goldschmidt. You'll be talking about the age 32-33 seasons for either of them. Nonzero chance both could be extended before FA, and if that happens, Abreu is the only quality 1b available on the market. As free agents. That doesn't cover the trade market at all.

  16. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 7, 2017 -> 11:49 AM) If you own a bitcoin right now, why would you even want to spend it? You could by $12,000 worth of things yesterday, or you could $18,000 worth of things with the same bitcoin today. Because it could be worthless tomorrow.
  17. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 7, 2017 -> 11:40 AM) Cease is still being groomed as a starting pitcher until he proves he can't be. Danish and Adams don't have the pure plus stuff to be effective out of the bullpen (they are too hittable). Fulmer might do better transitioning to the bullpen, but I'd still give him the chance to start in 2018 first. Burdi might not pitch until 2019 or late 2018, but I think he will be solid. We can only have five starting pitchers at the major league level. Some of these guys will only have a road to the majors through the bullpen. If we can't fill five starters through the rebuild, we are pretty well f***ed.
  18. I am just going to say it. This is Exhibit A in the case that messages boards do not make good General Managers.
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 7, 2017 -> 11:13 AM) That bullpen could look impressive rapidly if you've got a Rodon, Cease, and Kimbrel out there. We could build exactly that ourselves. Once Burdi is back, you will have two dedicated relievers who have already hit 102. We have multiple other guys who have touched 100, and even more in the 97-99 range.
  20. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Dec 7, 2017 -> 10:45 AM) Well how long do you think it'll take to build a dominant bullpen ? You absolutely need one to be serious about contending. That means 3 or possibly 4 guys the Sox don't have yet. I know it's pretty illogical to sign RP's to more than 2 or 3 years but the bullpen is my biggest worry for when the Sox start contending. I suppose this year could be all about trying the scrap heap relievers but guys who produce like we had like Robertson, Swarzak and Kahnle are going to be very hard to find. We have so many 70 to 80 arms in the system it is physically impossible for them to all end up as major league starters. We also have a subset of arms in that group who are already relievers only. We have a potentially dominant and deep bullpen in our minors as we speak today. For the burnout rate of relievers, and for the cost of them, there is no reason for us to go out and spend money on them until it is time to contend and we know exactly what holes we need to fill in the specifically. I listed like 15 to 20 names of before, but suffice to say we have guys. We just need to give them time to find out if they can be The Guys.
  21. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Dec 7, 2017 -> 10:22 AM) The question is how far will this go. Bitcoin isn't based on anything but perceived value, and that value is being generated by demand. There's a huge amount of demand, but it's really just beginning and bitcoins acceptance, especially globally, is still growing. I find it hard to believe that suddenly, tomorrow, everyone just stops believing that bitcoin is something valuable. $16k valuable? i dunno, but there's really no rhyme or reason here. It could drop or it could rise to a million per. Anyone claiming to know is just guessing. This has all of the checkboxes of a historical bubble. Just because the product is different doesn't change that.
