ESPN on Moncada
QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 25, 2017 -> 08:34 PM) One takeaway from me is that pitch from Abreu on Cuban players really seemed to effect Yoan and may come into play with Robert if we spend comparably. If Robert is cleared after June 15, and goes into the next July 2 period, the Sox history with Cuban players should be a huge asset with money becoming relatively equal.

QUOTE (Al Lopez's Ghost @ Mar 25, 2017 -> 11:40 AM) If The choice is between Anthony Swarzak or Tommy Kahnle, you really can't go right. This. Fighting over middle relief on a bad team? Ugh.

Lucas Giolito
QUOTE (GreenSox @ Mar 25, 2017 -> 10:54 AM) A successful rebuild will still result in at least 1/2 of the prospects flopping. Gotta have the stomach for it. The Sox still have only moved 3 of the 10 or so players that they need to move. The drafts of the last 2 years and for the next 2 years, along with international signings (should they finally decide to seriously partake) are also part of the rebuild. And then when they are 4 or so spots away, they will bring in the FAs (versus doing it when they have only 4 spots internally filled). If it "fails" then that means the scouting and development remain subpar. As soon "rebuild" was declared, half of the roster instantly gained value that it didn't have the day before in Sox fans eyes.

Lucas Giolito
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 25, 2017 -> 10:00 AM) You are assuming several things. One that Eaton's decline will be swift and sharp, and that over the next several years and even last winter, the package the White Sox received for Adam Eaton couldn't have been topped. Prospects break your heart. If Giolito is a bust, and if anyone bases his bust potential on spring training, that is really something, this trade should not have been made. And if anyone thinks Lopez is a future star based on spring training, that is insane too. For it to be a good trade IMO at least 2 of them have to be good. In August we all might decide this trade was awesome or awful, and even then may still be way off. projecting pitchers 4 and 5 years out is a very difficult thing. And this is the exact downside to "blow it up". If it fails, we are talking years more of problems.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Mar 25, 2017 -> 09:32 AM) I think we should all have some concerns within Giolito's results so far, but it's way too early to jump to conclusions. Even that article spells it out pretty clearly: don't overreact to spring training. Let's give him a few months in Charlotte and see how things progress. One thing that makes me optimistic is how in touch he is with analytics and that he's willing to leverage them to make himself a better pitcher. He specifically mentioned spin rate and how certain mechanical changes could help him in that area. If this kid ends up flopping, it won't be from lack of a effort or thoughtfulness. It isn't the spring training results nearly as much as the why. There are serious questions about his mechanics and ability to repeat pitches. Those are very serious and legitimate problems.

QUOTE (Superstar Lamar @ Mar 24, 2017 -> 04:35 PM) As excited as he will be to pay either Arrietta or a guy like Arrietta $25 million over seven years. The Cubs have no problem spending money on pitching or in the free agent market in general.

QUOTE (Superstar Lamar @ Mar 24, 2017 -> 01:26 PM) I, for the life of me, cannot figure out why the Cubs are not involved in discussions for Quintana. It just seems like such a great fit now and really smart long term budgeting for the future. Any prospect they give up would be duplicative of what they currently have cost controlled and performing at the MLB level. Meanwhile, adding Quintana takes all the bite out of Arrietta's demands that will most likely be in the $25 million per year range. I really do not know how a smart executive like Epstein doesn't see this. How excited do you think he is to give up guys like Happ, Jimenez, etc?

QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Mar 24, 2017 -> 12:16 PM) Fair enough. Leaving aside the specifics of the Pirates organization, would you want the Sox to take a deal with a pitcher as a headliner, and three top 150 position prospects coming over? I don't think the Sox necessarily need a position player to headline a Q deal, but if they don't, they need to bring back 2 or 3 position players that would rank above Basabe in the Sox position prospect rankings. I'd be comfortable with a deal like that. I absolutely want a top end hitting prospects in a deal. Not top 150, as good as possible of a hitter. I get that the top 10 is pretty much off limits in this trade market, but that is what I am shooting for, and building a deal from there. I am not super big on rankings, but I want the best hitter at a premium position I can get.

President Donald Trump: The Thread
QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Mar 24, 2017 -> 10:25 AM) So, the problem with that argument is that it ignores the context of what was actually happening at the time Trump made his comments. People in Jewish communities were scared. Notwithstanding the threats, the Trump administration's rise has coincided with an increased visual presence of white supremacists, etc. The critique of Trump was more about his response not taking the concerns of those communities seriously. Even assuming Trump knew that the threats were hoaxes from within the Jewish community, coming out and saying that without supporting evidence doesn't do anything to help the communities who are actually scared. Trump later came out with a more forceful message condemning any acts of hate against Jewish communities, but the President's words, taking the context into account, were still bad and not helpful. It amazes me how if you swap out Muslim extremist for Jewish here, you have the same thing that went on in the last administration, with the parties (as always) flipped .

QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Mar 24, 2017 -> 10:32 AM) SSK, what would you think about a deal with the Pirates that was Glasnow, Bell, Keller and Hayes? You don't get the position headliner, but you get 3 position players that would all be in the top 5 position players in the Sox system immediately. I doubt that deal is on the table, but if I'm Hahn, that's a deal I'd jump at. I guess my point here is that the Sox don't need a position player as a headliner, but they do need the majority of the return to be position players, and position players that are top 150 or so prospects. Without Meadows in a deal, Pittsburgh is one of the last teams I would like to see a deal done with. Glasnow scares the crap out of me with his lack of control. I get the stuff is there, but to still be walking 6/9 IP is scary. Bell has a nice bat, but is a DH in waiting from the sounds of it. I think we can do better than that from somewhere else, and I would be willing to sit on Q until we did.

President Donald Trump: The Thread
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 23, 2017 -> 09:33 PM) Why? People have responded to his silly claims in the past with substance and even in this particular case, but he never even acknowledges responses. Unless you're taking some of his silly claims in that part seriously, what do you think is actually worthy of a response? Are you familiar with what a Gish gallop is and why trying to debate against it is a losing effort? So, by adding a post to this thread acknowledging these guidelines, you are stating the following... 1. I will not insult other posters, directly or indirectly 2. I will not threaten anyone, even in jest 3. I will not bait people or push them over the line (a.k.a. pushing their buttons) 4. I will not post statements for the purpose of angering others 5. I will not prod posters repeatedly on a subject or chase them across topics to make a point 6. I will try to make posts that actually add to the discussion at hand

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Mar 24, 2017 -> 12:08 AM) http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/zeise-i...version=pgevoke Pittsburgh writer suggests Quintana for Glasnow, Keller, & Bell. Would you guys take that deal if offered or wait for something better? I'm torn here because it's obviously a ton of talent, but I hate that the one positional prospect we'd be getting is more of a 1B/DH type. Because of the first two deals, the Sox have to get a top position player as a headliner in this deal. Really they should be at least the top two players. More pitchers just puts the rebuild further behind.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Mar 23, 2017 -> 06:31 PM) Yeah, I get it...but it's like when teams were scouting Chris Sale. You ask yourself, for what? What more is there to see here? Where I disagree with you, however, though, is that this performance didn't increase Q's value. It doesn't matter the competition when you are that dominant. Pretty certain scouts came away today saying "this dude is the real deal." I would love to ask this question of teams and their scouts. I mean I get scouting the young guys, because of growth and development, but what are you looking for with a proven commodity like Q?

QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Mar 23, 2017 -> 04:16 PM) And a .500 team in an awful division only needs a few things going right to be a playoff contender. I know that's been the slogan of the past few years but the difference here will be that we're an up and coming team centered around youth and not patchwork mediocre veterans. People have a ton of faith in pretty much everything going right the next three years, even when directly contradicts what has already happened repeatedly.

QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Mar 23, 2017 -> 04:06 PM) The weakness of the division is probably the best reason we might have a shot in 2019. If the rebuild is going well we should be a roughly .500 team, and our division is probably going to be awful. KC and Detroit are probably going to be rebuilding, the Twins still don't really have a path to get pitching, and Cleveland will probably be in its decline phase by then. I wouldn't be surprised if the ALC is by far the worst division in baseball in 2019. Within a few games of .500 either way seems realistic to me for 2019.
