2017 Republican Thread
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Feb 7, 2017 -> 08:02 PM) There's theory and then there's reality (like running low inflation for a decade with interest rates at zero.) Greenspan stopped regulating when things were going great and then it was too late to put the genie back in the bottle. Unless you call his "irrational exuberance" comments a brake on the gas pedal. Other than the KC Reserve Bank, what governors were even skeptical a decade ago? There's been more consolidation and too big to fail is just as true today as a decade ago. Probably moreso. I am curious which part of the Federal Reserve bank charter deals with Anti-Trust issues?

2017 Republican Thread
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 7, 2017 -> 05:16 PM) Even if we instantly implemented a "financial education" course and requirement today, though, you've still got tens of millions of people in this country who are already out of high school and may not have enough financial literacy to be aware of these issues and that their "adviser" they're trusting their life savings with may not have their best interests in mind. It's a common enough issue that some financial services firms even have commercials where people ask someone "how does your adviser get paid?" and the person sits there with a blank look on their face. There are already people that are held to the fiduciary standard, so I guess I'm struggling to see why this couldn't be implemented to people who now only have to meet a "suitable" standard. As explained before, the costs will be ridiculous. Firms will go out of business, and people whose investments don't outweigh regulatory costs won't have options for investment firms anymore as firms will quit accepting them. The unintended consequences here are going to be disastrous for a lot of people.

2017 Republican Thread
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Feb 7, 2017 -> 05:22 PM) You still haven't explained how you change that position from cheerleader/soothsayer for the economy to regulator. Seems to be a conflict. Like essentially allowing investment banks to grade their own securities since ratings agencies can no longer be trusted to be independent. I don't think you understand the role of the fed at all. They are the banking system's regulatory body. The federal reserve bank isn't a PR firm. They are responsible for the safety and stability of the entire banking system. The fact that all of these financial products have relationships to the overall system alone is reason enough for them all to be done under one roof. While there has been a role of a cheerleader at times of trouble, that isn't the systems primary role at all. Not even close. The fun part is bolded is exactly the rule that Congress enacted for grading of securities. They were pissed off at the ratings agencies, so they rewrote the rules to remove all mentions of the ratings and that system. Guess who is deciding credit worthiness of bonds now?

2017 Republican Thread
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Feb 7, 2017 -> 04:47 PM) How well would that have worked under Greenspan...there would have been zero oversight and regulation of the mortgage industry. You'd have the opposite problem, too much power concentrated in the hands of a few in Washington. Don't Republicans want to break up that power and let it devolve to the states? How would you keep it apolitical...since Reserve Board commissioners are appointed by Dems and Republicans alike? When was the last "bipartisan committee" to actually get something constructive done in Washington? Simpson/Bowles on budgeting? That is the exact opposite of what I just posted. The rest of it is just partisan posing.

PECOTA predicts Sox finish 4th in AL Central
QUOTE (miracleon35th @ Feb 7, 2017 -> 04:40 PM) Yes, no Sale every fifth game and no Eaton. But..there are a few things that make the team better in some respects than it was last year. No Danks, No Matt Latos, No Matt Albers, a better option at SS to start the season than Jimmy Rollins, a better option at second base with Moncada, possibly a better clubhouse attitude without Sale and Eaton, and a much better Manager than Robin Ventura. A Closer other than Robertson might be another plus considering the key games he blew that really helped to turn the season around. It is too early to make any predictions though. We will have a better idea during Spring Training, don't you think? The Sox have question marks but I am not ready to predict last place out of 30 teams yet. This team is also going to be worse at Catcher as well. 2B is going to be essentially the same thing as it was last year, until at least mid season. No help there. Sure you might see a rebound out of someone, but you are just as likely to see a falloff out of someone else. Instead of Danks and Latos, we have Shields for a full season, Dylan Covey and Derrick Holland. Not seeing any help there. I could see a rebound out of a guy like Robertson, but the middle to back of the pen wasn't pretty last year, and won't be pretty this year either. This is a pen that finished the year with a middle of the pack ERA out of the pen. It wasn't a good pen, it was an average pen. This is a pen that has lost Zack Duke, Matt Albers, and Tommy Kahnle to start with. Now middle innings will be concentrating to guys like Michael Ynoa, Tyler Danish, and Chris Beck.

PECOTA predicts Sox finish 4th in AL Central
QUOTE (ptatc @ Feb 7, 2017 -> 04:10 PM) I think with the current bullpen and 3 decent starters and an offense around 20, they could finish in the bottom middle third of the league without that many standard deviation improvements from every player. i doubt they will be in the bottom 5. This offense ranked 21st in OPS with Adam Eaton last year. I just don't see it.

Predict Thy Numbers: Charlie Tilson
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Feb 7, 2017 -> 03:21 PM) Ya I'm giving Tilson a chance to hit at the top of the lineup to start the season whether that's first or second. I doubt he's ever going to amount to being a good top of the order hitter but this season I'm letting him try. There is no good reason to at least try him up there. Either #1 or #2 depending on what you want to do with Anderson.

Teams have upped their offers in Q derby in the last week
QUOTE (flavum @ Feb 7, 2017 -> 03:37 PM) They better not blow this. I'm thinking the Astros and Sox need each other right now. There are about 25 teams in baseball who could use Q right now. There are teams out there who make a ton of sense, Houston is just one of them. Honestly farm system or not, the Yankees aren't catching the Red Sox anytime soon without some outside blood being poured into their franchise. Pittsburgh needs a big move worse than any franchise in baseball right now.

2017 Republican Thread
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 7, 2017 -> 10:08 AM) Because when you impose lots of layers of regs that are overlapping in purpose, doing all that paperwork and documentation takes time, and therefore costs money. It's also less time doing what customers want them to do - analysis and guidance. That's not to say you should have no regs, but instead that you make sure you make the burden as low as possible to still achieve the ends. And let's be frank, if all people want to do is pick a few mutual funds, they really don't need an advisor to begin with. Financial regulation in this country is a flat out disaster. You have dozens of different agencies, each with a piece of responsibilities of the overall pie. None of these organizations work together to share relevant information. Many of these rules have overlapping regulatory bodies, of which often don't disagree on the actual interpretation of the rules, and each tells the same firm to do something different with the same item. Each of these agencies got their start out of a different federal agency, most of which don't even fall under the scope of the financial sector anyway (as in neither the SEC or the Federal Reserve bank as their heads) This is just another step down that road of discombobulated financial regulations in a attempt to do some good, but without a true understanding of what actually would do some good here. Do you really want to fix regulatory issues? Burn it all to the ground and start over again. Place all financial regulatory authority into the Federal Reserve bank. Give them the authority to investigate and connect all financial products, and not just the banking system. You could even do this with the SEC at the lead, but to me it doesn't sense to do it without the institution responsible for monetary policy being the head of it. Then you have one agency with the ability to oversee all financial products, instead of just one thing at a time. You shouldn't have one body for stocks, one body for options, one body for bonds, one body for mortgage securities, one body for options, etc. Get it all under the same roof. Then you can start to fix what is systemic with the overall system, instead of just trying to stab at individual problems.

2017 Democratic Thread
QUOTE (brett05 @ Feb 7, 2017 -> 02:00 PM) Let's correct this. No one said there was an official rule, but it is called the Biden Rule. No outrage over his statement was made by the liberals when it was said. So yes, the fact is the idea is a liberal idea and it came thru this past election cycle. You'd get smashed in even a liberal court with this silliness. So you want the government to be run like Joe Biden wanted it run? And you called me a liberal.

PECOTA predicts Sox finish 4th in AL Central
QUOTE (ptatc @ Feb 7, 2017 -> 01:17 PM) I don't know. They are probably figuring, Abreu and Frazier won't be as bad and Anderson will improve. The offense will be around 20th. They still have a decent bullpen and a good 3 starters. Along with the fact that some of the players acquired will be up at some point. They aren't going to be good but as currently constructed, they aren't going to be at the bottom. They might not be the worst, but the aren't going to be middle of the pack without some 3 standard deviation seasons from almost every player on the team.

Teams have upped their offers in Q derby in the last week
QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Feb 7, 2017 -> 12:27 AM) I've always been a huge fan of Q ( as I am with most young Sox players (Avi coughcough). I remember many here using the term smoke and mirrors with Q's surprising performance in his 1st 2 years with the Sox. Even now with his name all over trade rumors and many more learning how good he has been its hard to believe he is still under rated but he is. A recent example is when MLBN lists it's top 10 players at all positions. Usually they have their unbiased "Shredder" then a group of panelists so they end up with multiple opinions of a top 10 list. Even though the list is called Top 10 Right Now the panelists use varying ways for who to put on their lists. Some use the players total body of work some use only the last year, some the last few years, yet I can never recall ever seeing Q on any ones list in the years they have been doing Top 10. This year John Smoltz not only listed his Top 10 but even listed his Top 20 since their are so many starting pitchers as compared to starting players at other positions. Q wasn't even in his top 20. Yet when you read what was in the article you listed ,"Since the start of 2013, Quintana is one of only seven pitchers in baseball to make 120 starts, toss 800 innings and post an ERA+ of 115 or better. The other six: Max Scherzer, Corey Kluber, Jon Lester, Madison Bumgarner, David Price and Cole Hamels. We're talking about one of the best and most consistent starters in baseball for the last four years" it should blow you away he is listed among those pitchers. But we still even have our fans saying he might not be in the Top 20 pitchers also. We have national writers saying he's a number 3 starter. Hahn hasn't even been able to snag a couple decent prospects for him yet. I don't know what these other teams are looking for but it should be a pitcher exactly like Q. Still youngish, consistently good, injury free, amazing contract (just look at the contracts most of those other 6 guys are like !) and most likely not to flop. He is a pitchers pitcher and I hope if he is moved that he kicks ass because he is a pros pro and will do any franchise proud. I swear it is just because he can't dial back and hit 95. Guys like him usually take to get recognized.

Robertson to WASH was close, now at stalemate
QUOTE (ChiliIrishHammock24 @ Feb 7, 2017 -> 12:59 AM) I don't know if this has been posted or not but this guy HAS actually scooped 2 stories this offseason, so he might know something... Sean Sears @sean_sears6 9h9 hours ago More #Nationals are playing it close to the chest with closer trade talks, a source of mine was told they were "exploring all options" Obviously that doesn't change anything, but he might be someone to watch on twitter if his source has info about Nats. Exploring all options is usually code for doesn't like the market prices, so they are thinking about something unconventional. That could mean a lottery ticket, or a trade for someone that no one is talking about.
