New abortion Law
QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Nov 2, 2009 -> 04:14 PM) Ok then, what if the 15 year old is the daughter of Christian Scientists and she is diagnosed with cancer. The daughter wants chemo, the parents want to pray it out. Whose priority matters then? I think Balta raises a perfectly good point - if we expect to treat some juveniles as adults for crimes that they have committed, it seems entirely reasonable to treat children like adults for certain medical issues. If the daughter has a problem with that, she does have the legal system that can aid her.

New abortion Law
QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Nov 2, 2009 -> 03:00 PM) So what you're saying is that 15 year olds should be treated as adults for what they do to other people's bodies but treated like children for what they do to their own? The safety of other people is more important to me. Like I said, it is akin to the limits on freedom of speech.

They also mentioned the credit default swaps. They are moving hard into expansion, and this is a good time to be doing so.

CME chairman/CEO about to be on MSNBC
That was the first time I have seen it discussed on an "official" level. They gave a firm "no comment" on it, which means they are talking for sure. Like I said when the CBOT/CME merger happened, it makes perfect sense for Chicago to look to a more vertical formation, which NYC controlling the stock market in the US. It is their best chance to challenge the NYSE and NASDAQ.

New abortion Law
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 2, 2009 -> 02:20 PM) I'll note that you've taken "Charging them as an adult" and made the opposite option allowing them freely on the streets. That's something of a straw man since no one would be simply allowing them back onto the streets, but more importantly it's not germane to the discussion. The issue is why the law in 1 case says that you should treat a 15 year old like an adult and in another case you shouldn't. That's because our juvenile justice system can't hold anyone past age 18. It isn't incredibly complex.

New abortion Law
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 2, 2009 -> 02:15 PM) I'll note that you didn't answer my question. To answer yours...perhaps not a judge...but if there were some legal means by which a person could apply to get around this law based on specific familial issues, that'd satisfy me. Crime is different than medical procedures. Putting a 15 year old on the streets at 18 who killed someone is different than a 15 year old not getting an abortion because she was afraid to tell her parents. I think public safety becomes more important at some point. Kinda like yelling fire in a crowded theater.

New abortion Law
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 2, 2009 -> 02:00 PM) So wait 1 second...probably a thread derailer here...but you're arguing we've deemed them incapable of making decisions for themselves, but don't we charge them with crimes as adults all the time? Isn't the U.S. one of only 2 countries (along with the ideal Democracy which is Somalia) that has not ratified the U.N. convention on rights of the child because our criminal justice system wants to be able to treat them as adults? Would you favor putting teenage girls in front of a judge to decide them competency for an abortion?

QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ Nov 2, 2009 -> 01:45 PM) Also, no notice is required in a medical emergency or if the girl declares in writing that she is a victim of sexual abuse. And a provision in the law allows girls to bypass parental notification by going before a judge, who would then have 48 hours to rule on the petition. another crime being committed completely negates things in my eyes. Things like rape/incest/ etc, change things past normal.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Nov 2, 2009 -> 01:20 PM) As they should. Have you ever read what is in flu shots/vaccinations?! The purified virus aside, the liquids that accompany these shots are incredibly dangerous. Kids could unknowingly be allergic to any number of these items, and not know it, and then what? Going along that same vein of thought, it isn't like an abortion is a 100% safe procedure either. There are some pretty major risks, including sterility, cancer, and death. I know the argument is that it doesn't happen very often, but how often does a worst case scenario happen out of the flu shot?

I do know for a fact that the schools, pharmacies, clinics, and anywhere else giving them, are requiring parental consent for the H1n1 shot in Indiana.

AL Central team interested in Manny?
QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Nov 2, 2009 -> 01:10 PM) I dot think there is anyway they can afford him. They have a hefty payroll and an economically depressed city. They do have some money coming off of the payroll, plus they are looking for some help with the contract.

New abortion Law
In two of the three situations he mentioned there are other legal factors involved, that need to be addressed. The religion angle is a big copout, because it is present in any other thing that a teenager would be deciding at that point. It doesn't make it any more or less relevant.

I could also see it being Detroit. They don't seem to mind lazy malcontents up there.

New abortion Law
QUOTE (lostfan @ Nov 2, 2009 -> 12:59 PM) I don't really see what's so divisive about it, just seeing it on its face. I'm not a pro-lifer and I think this is an entirely reasonable law, unlike the crazy-assed laws they have in Oklahoma where they publish your address and s***. Like I said, I see it in a big picture sense as how you view the maturity level of a 17 year old. As a society we have deemed them incapable of deciding things for themselves. The only reason this is different is because it is abortion, and not something less controversial.

New abortion Law
QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Nov 2, 2009 -> 12:56 PM) 2k5, you summed it up right there. Now, my question is this: can a teenager undergo any medical procedure without parental consent? I dont know the laws on this? I was under the impression an adult had to sign off on any medical procedure a minor has. If so, then it SHOULD be applied to abortions as well. IMO, taking the abortion angle out of it completely, we as a society say that a 17 year old isn't mature enough to get a cell phone contract, or enter into other legal agreements. How can we as a society say that they are mature enough to decide, on their own, about a medical procedure. Could they go in and get plastic surgery without parental permission?
