  1. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 23, 2009 -> 10:28 AM) I disagree here. I see no stabilization related to the events. India went nuclear some time in the 80's by most accounts, and wars continued. Paki went more recently, and they still nip at each other. The lack of all out war in recent years is more a factor of lack of central military control in Pakistan, its own fights in the north with Taliban and other tribes, and an economy that was collapsing some time ago. Not to mention the flow of that information and materials to other countries and the destabilization that has had on other parts of the world.
  2. According to the BAC CEO, the Obama administration forced his company to choose between breaking the disclosure to shareholders law, and keeping quiet about the problems at Merrill. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124045610029046349.html
  3. No earth day talk from yesterday? What happened to all of my favorite tree huggers? I even took a car full of electronics recycling down to the proper county dump off spot.
  4. QUOTE (joejoedairy @ Apr 22, 2009 -> 09:17 PM) next poll... are you concerned with alexie's early seaon hitting Quickly followed by one about Contreras's pitching...
  5. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Apr 22, 2009 -> 02:59 PM) Glad to see all of that Bush administration arrogance is gone now...
  6. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Apr 22, 2009 -> 04:54 PM) No coincidence that I fear Pakistan more than Venezuela, Cuba and Iran combined. They are the ones who currently have nuclear bombs, all though it won't be too much longer for Iran.
  7. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Apr 22, 2009 -> 01:15 PM) Doing things like that out in the open with huge media coverage is a lot different than funneling in arms as covertly as possible and letting the CIA pick which countries it wants to destabilize. Did the CIA gets disbanded and I missed it? Because I believe we are doing exactly what you are talking about in Pakistan as we speak.
  8. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Apr 22, 2009 -> 12:56 PM) But we did make it official policy to support people like Saddam and the Afghan government which lead to the killing of hundreds of thousands. We were for them, before we were against them. Because I am sure getting buddy/buddy with Castro, Chavez, and Ahmandinijad will turn out just fine this time around...
  9. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Apr 22, 2009 -> 11:50 AM) Here's what kinda pisses me off about the whole thing. Cheney keeps saying "but look what info it got us". So, basically, he is saying the ends justify the means, which is NOT what we stand for as a country. We are against torture... no matter what the results. So, for Chaney to say what he is saying, says he doesnt give a rats ass about the constitution, the Geneva conventions, or the rights of humans. As long as we get what we want, the rules be damned. Now see, that is exactly how I see Obama's economic policy.
  10. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 22, 2009 -> 11:36 AM) Thus my use of tense - WILL. Its early in the season and it is cold, they aren't lengthening out quite yet. Which is why it is important to get starters their innings now. If you aren't stretching these guys out, you aren't going to be able to get long games out of them, and then you start to make Carrasco, Egbert, and Richard more important than you really want them to be.
  11. QUOTE (Cknolls @ Apr 22, 2009 -> 11:01 AM) So it was probably by chance that the details of the "torture" interrogations were released by the administration, but the "supposed" attacks that the interrogations averted, were redacted. Which is why Dick Cheney has been campaigning loudly to get the whole story told.
  12. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Apr 17, 2009 -> 11:11 AM) Imagine that. Well, I was Watching The Wheels spin by and decided to spout off some Instant Karma. Anyway, time for lunch. Today I'm Giving Peas A Chance. How can you sleep at night? (yeah, I couldn't walk away, sue me!)
  13. QUOTE (Benchwarmerjim @ Apr 17, 2009 -> 09:02 PM) Twins DFA Phillip Humber QUOTE (Kalapse @ Apr 21, 2009 -> 01:53 PM) The Royals moved Horacio Ramirez to the pen and recalled Brian Bannister to take his spot in the rotation. That didn't take long. Also, Philip Humber cleared waivers and was sent outright to AAA Rochester. Wow, no one wanted to take a chance on this kid? So is he not as good as was thought, or is he a problem child?
  14. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Apr 22, 2009 -> 09:28 AM) Are there some snow flakes flying around in Texas (looks outside...) The Cubs didn't win the world Series, we are all OK.
  15. QUOTE (shipps @ Apr 22, 2009 -> 09:32 AM) Hope you have a good one Jas. Make sure the lady gives you a special blowjob today. And make sure not to "dine" and "dash" on her this time! Happy Birthday Jason!
  16. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 22, 2009 -> 09:18 AM) People keep missing two things here. First, no one, Ginsburg or otherwise, is saying we look at other laws when we already have related laws or jurisprudence in place that give us the answer. So no one is trying to use other laws to govern our nation. As you say, we have finite laws to work with, and they don't cover everything - so why on earth would you not take a look at what others have done, as a reference? Just like state courts look to other states' decisions for guidance, even though the laws of each state are slightly different. Second, I hope everyone realizes that the laws of this country, Constitution included, were guided in great part by finding the best in breed from other countries. Our laws are rooted in common law and other laws already present in other countries well before our laws existed. The US didn't invent the concept of law. So, our laws and court decisions are all influenced by foreign laws already anyway. Your point kinda reinforces mine. We have picked the laws we want to pick for a reason. Why should judges get the legislators jobs of picking the new laws? To me is breaks the chain of checks and balances.
  17. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Apr 22, 2009 -> 09:16 AM) I didn't see last night - but I do think you're helping me make my point. I think JC's "stuff" is there, he just needs to dial it in. And if conditioning is a factor, he needs to get his pitches in if he is going to get past it. Pulling him after 80 pitches isn't going to get him in shape to go 110.
  18. Anyways, I am for sure in the "its too early to panic" phase. Imagine being free after 19 years of oppression and being told what to do and thing. Add to that wealth beyond your wildest dreams and, oh yeah, a whole new language and culture to learn, not to mention none of your friends around, and the pressure of preforming on a big public stage. Then top that off with being 20 years old and not fully mature. The reality is, statistically, this whole year could be lost, and I wouldn't be surprised. Even if we end up getting nothing out of him until next year, if he comes close to his potential, the kid is a steal.
  19. QUOTE (chunk23 @ Apr 22, 2009 -> 08:56 AM) He apologizes occasionally, but it's in the back-handed form of "I'm sorry that these people are thin-skinned and got offended at what I said", regardless of the objective offensiveness of his statement. Which is pretty much the standard political "apology" of the 21st century.
  20. Any talk yet about the Obama administration having to decide what to do with the 16 year old boy who could be facing life in prison, or even the death penalty for his role as a pirate and kidnapper?
  21. QUOTE (Texsox @ Apr 21, 2009 -> 04:42 PM) Bottom line, it just seems wrong to say, we don't want more information, we want less. The embracing of ignorance is perhaps one reason why those in the business of law are held in such low esteem by a segment of the population. While most professions would be looking anywhere for better ideas, lawyers and judges are told to dig their heads in the sand and not look around. Seems like a faulty system if we cannot trust judges to think. Its not ignorance to want to interpret your own laws through the eyes of your own country. The law isn't something where you can pick and choose what to look at. They have very finite statues and prior rulings that are supposed to be their basis. Why would a law in a different part of the world be relevant to our own laws? That doesn't make any sense. We don't live somewhere else, so why would we use their laws to govern us?
  22. QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Apr 21, 2009 -> 03:30 PM) The other factor about Europe...the old cities aren't built for cars, driving or parking AND gas prices are much higher. So it's cheaper with train travel. As for the hubs...Chicago is probably the best place to start. Why? Central location. Try to spider out from Chicago to the places mentioned above. Detroit, Indy, St. Louis, Minneapolis. If it works out and more people are using it, it's going to be a lot cheaper to start from here and go to NY, LA or Houston. I say, let's do it. I'll even chip in a few pesos. I would actually argue the east coast is the best place because there are so many people in a small area, much like Europe. The less population density, the less chance something like this will work. That is going to be the biggest problem with high speed in the US is that our population is spread over such a wide area, it isn't going to be nearly as effective as a place like Japan where everyone is right on top of each other.
  23. QUOTE (danman31 @ Apr 22, 2009 -> 12:39 AM) Remember how hopeless Alexei looked in April and into May? This year or last year?
  24. QUOTE (The Beast @ Apr 21, 2009 -> 04:51 PM) What time are we playing? I'm adding this to my calendar as we speak. 2 pm
