The Republican Thread
QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Apr 22, 2009 -> 01:15 PM) Doing things like that out in the open with huge media coverage is a lot different than funneling in arms as covertly as possible and letting the CIA pick which countries it wants to destabilize. Did the CIA gets disbanded and I missed it? Because I believe we are doing exactly what you are talking about in Pakistan as we speak.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Apr 22, 2009 -> 12:56 PM) But we did make it official policy to support people like Saddam and the Afghan government which lead to the killing of hundreds of thousands. We were for them, before we were against them. Because I am sure getting buddy/buddy with Castro, Chavez, and Ahmandinijad will turn out just fine this time around...

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Apr 22, 2009 -> 11:50 AM) Here's what kinda pisses me off about the whole thing. Cheney keeps saying "but look what info it got us". So, basically, he is saying the ends justify the means, which is NOT what we stand for as a country. We are against torture... no matter what the results. So, for Chaney to say what he is saying, says he doesnt give a rats ass about the constitution, the Geneva conventions, or the rights of humans. As long as we get what we want, the rules be damned. Now see, that is exactly how I see Obama's economic policy.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 22, 2009 -> 11:36 AM) Thus my use of tense - WILL. Its early in the season and it is cold, they aren't lengthening out quite yet. Which is why it is important to get starters their innings now. If you aren't stretching these guys out, you aren't going to be able to get long games out of them, and then you start to make Carrasco, Egbert, and Richard more important than you really want them to be.

QUOTE (Cknolls @ Apr 22, 2009 -> 11:01 AM) So it was probably by chance that the details of the "torture" interrogations were released by the administration, but the "supposed" attacks that the interrogations averted, were redacted. Which is why Dick Cheney has been campaigning loudly to get the whole story told.

QUOTE (Benchwarmerjim @ Apr 17, 2009 -> 09:02 PM) Twins DFA Phillip Humber QUOTE (Kalapse @ Apr 21, 2009 -> 01:53 PM) The Royals moved Horacio Ramirez to the pen and recalled Brian Bannister to take his spot in the rotation. That didn't take long. Also, Philip Humber cleared waivers and was sent outright to AAA Rochester. Wow, no one wanted to take a chance on this kid? So is he not as good as was thought, or is he a problem child?

Ruth Bader Ginsburg and International Law
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 22, 2009 -> 09:18 AM) People keep missing two things here. First, no one, Ginsburg or otherwise, is saying we look at other laws when we already have related laws or jurisprudence in place that give us the answer. So no one is trying to use other laws to govern our nation. As you say, we have finite laws to work with, and they don't cover everything - so why on earth would you not take a look at what others have done, as a reference? Just like state courts look to other states' decisions for guidance, even though the laws of each state are slightly different. Second, I hope everyone realizes that the laws of this country, Constitution included, were guided in great part by finding the best in breed from other countries. Our laws are rooted in common law and other laws already present in other countries well before our laws existed. The US didn't invent the concept of law. So, our laws and court decisions are all influenced by foreign laws already anyway. Your point kinda reinforces mine. We have picked the laws we want to pick for a reason. Why should judges get the legislators jobs of picking the new laws? To me is breaks the chain of checks and balances.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Apr 22, 2009 -> 09:16 AM) I didn't see last night - but I do think you're helping me make my point. I think JC's "stuff" is there, he just needs to dial it in. And if conditioning is a factor, he needs to get his pitches in if he is going to get past it. Pulling him after 80 pitches isn't going to get him in shape to go 110.

Dayan Viciedo
Anyways, I am for sure in the "its too early to panic" phase. Imagine being free after 19 years of oppression and being told what to do and thing. Add to that wealth beyond your wildest dreams and, oh yeah, a whole new language and culture to learn, not to mention none of your friends around, and the pressure of preforming on a big public stage. Then top that off with being 20 years old and not fully mature. The reality is, statistically, this whole year could be lost, and I wouldn't be surprised. Even if we end up getting nothing out of him until next year, if he comes close to his potential, the kid is a steal.

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (chunk23 @ Apr 22, 2009 -> 08:56 AM) He apologizes occasionally, but it's in the back-handed form of "I'm sorry that these people are thin-skinned and got offended at what I said", regardless of the objective offensiveness of his statement. Which is pretty much the standard political "apology" of the 21st century.

Piracy around the Horn of Africa
Any talk yet about the Obama administration having to decide what to do with the 16 year old boy who could be facing life in prison, or even the death penalty for his role as a pirate and kidnapper?

Ruth Bader Ginsburg and International Law
QUOTE (Texsox @ Apr 21, 2009 -> 04:42 PM) Bottom line, it just seems wrong to say, we don't want more information, we want less. The embracing of ignorance is perhaps one reason why those in the business of law are held in such low esteem by a segment of the population. While most professions would be looking anywhere for better ideas, lawyers and judges are told to dig their heads in the sand and not look around. Seems like a faulty system if we cannot trust judges to think. Its not ignorance to want to interpret your own laws through the eyes of your own country. The law isn't something where you can pick and choose what to look at. They have very finite statues and prior rulings that are supposed to be their basis. Why would a law in a different part of the world be relevant to our own laws? That doesn't make any sense. We don't live somewhere else, so why would we use their laws to govern us?

Rail Transit improvements thread
QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Apr 21, 2009 -> 03:30 PM) The other factor about Europe...the old cities aren't built for cars, driving or parking AND gas prices are much higher. So it's cheaper with train travel. As for the hubs...Chicago is probably the best place to start. Why? Central location. Try to spider out from Chicago to the places mentioned above. Detroit, Indy, St. Louis, Minneapolis. If it works out and more people are using it, it's going to be a lot cheaper to start from here and go to NY, LA or Houston. I say, let's do it. I'll even chip in a few pesos. I would actually argue the east coast is the best place because there are so many people in a small area, much like Europe. The less population density, the less chance something like this will work. That is going to be the biggest problem with high speed in the US is that our population is spread over such a wide area, it isn't going to be nearly as effective as a place like Japan where everyone is right on top of each other.

Egbert really seemed to make an impression this spring. You really didnt hear his name at all, despite his numbers, and now he is the first call up. Hopefully he can do a solid job in the middle and as a long man.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Apr 21, 2009 -> 08:00 AM) After sleeping it off, and thinking myself a complete assclown, I am going back to pay the tab today. Solid move. The waitstaff are actually responsible for the bills at most places, so you most likely were taking money out of their pockets instead of the restaurant.

The Economy, stupid
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 20, 2009 -> 07:38 PM) Something interesting playing in to the data we're getting on these "Profitable" banks. It seems that, especially amongst the ones we thought were in the worst trouble (Citi, etc.), although they're telling us how they're currently making profits, they're also acting like banks that are very concerned about what's on their balance sheets; dramatically cutting back on lending, esp. over the last couple months. By the Journal's way of counting, they claim that lending in Feb. was off by 4.7% over January. Noteably, that's a raw number, not projected out over a year; it fell 4.7% in 1 month. Over a year that'd be well over a 30% drop if you factor things that way. Whatever the banks are saying publicly, there's a lot more depth to those "profits" than what we've been presented so far. It's hard to know exactly what to make of those numbers, given the recessionary pressures, the movement of money between different types of lending, etc, but it's as interesting of a signal as the claims of profitability. What is happening is exactly what I told you would happen. The healthy banks want nothing to do with the federal governments every changing rules, so instead of taking the money and lending, they are cutting back on lending and tightening their belts. This is a direct result of Obama policy, nothing else.
