  1. The team looks so much more comfortable out there with Sharp on this team. I know his numbers help, but his presense on the ice seems to help all by itself.
  2. QUOTE (lostfan @ Mar 22, 2009 -> 02:02 PM) I think it's mostly just to get him to see more ABs. I am guessing it is also a reward from Ozzie for Brian finally straightening up and flying right.
  3. QUOTE (Texsox @ Mar 23, 2009 -> 08:16 AM) OK. But why take three steps back? Honest question(s). Did salaries rise too far? And it seems that everyone points to everyone else as making too much. It seems the ripple effect of salary cuts would make things worse, force more people into bankruptcy, foreclosures, less capital available for savings, investments, etc, Would it be better for you an an individual to have your net costs going up when your income is going down? Its not any different for coporations versus individuals. When net income is shrinking, you can't have your costs going up, and expect to be in business, well unless you are the government.
  4. QUOTE (BearSox @ Mar 23, 2009 -> 07:52 AM) Beckham played vs. top college competition for 4 years. Granted the Cuban League is most likely tougher, Viciedo is much more raw than Beckham, IMO. Also considering there was a chance for him to make the team this year, it wouldn't surprise me in the least to see if he gets assigned to Charlotte. College baseball is not anywhere near playing in the Cuban professional leagues and international tournament play.
  5. QUOTE (Texsox @ Mar 23, 2009 -> 08:04 AM) Riddle me this, something I've been pondering for a while and have not reached a conclusion. It seems that over the past year there is a demand that most Americans, from autoworkers to CEOs, from government workers to baseball players, take huge pay and benefit cuts. Almost every time we read about salaries, some form of cutbacks seem to be called for. Even if this was possible, what does this do long term? It doesn't seem that long ago that rising wages were considered a good thing. So we magically cut back everyone's wages 10%, what is the benefit? If the whole economy is growing, it can sustain rising costs. With the whole pie shrinking, all it does it make the snapback bigger.

  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 23, 2009 -> 07:53 AM) I believe they estimate tax revenues based off of growth figures, and if there are any changes in rates, those would be factored in. Its also worth mentioning that a raise in taxes could very well result in a fall of incremental revenues over what is projected. Here is the full story... http://www.politonomist.com/the-deeper-ocean-of-debt-002108/
  8. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Mar 22, 2009 -> 04:47 PM) Dumb question: don't CBO estimates assume tax revenue to stay the same? I believe they estimate tax revenues based off of growth figures, and if there are any changes in rates, those would be factored in. Its also worth mentioning that a raise in taxes could very well result in a fall of incremental revenues over what is projected.
  9. QUOTE (BearSox @ Mar 22, 2009 -> 04:51 PM) We already sent Viciedo to Charlotte and he's a 20 year old getting his first taste of Pro baseball. Also, in another article, there was mention that Beckham will be headed to Charlotte. However, that could be just speculation by the writer. Viciedo has been playing professionally for four years now.
  10. QUOTE (BearSox @ Mar 22, 2009 -> 03:33 PM) I think there's a good shot we'll see Beckham go straight to Charlotte. No chance. It will be Birmingham.
  11. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Mar 22, 2009 -> 10:20 PM) Henry Blanco was right there... RIGHT THERE for the taking. Sure, if we could have offered him 80ish games to play this year.
  12. With the Sox offering contracts to Danks, Floyd, and TCQ, you can see what the teams mentality is. Capialize on the fear going on in the marketplace right now and try to lock up as many of these players as they can long term. While the market for the bottom players and old players really fell off, the market for top players really did not. The Sox are looking ahead to realize that young players with loads of talent aren't going to get cheaper, and locking them up sooner, rather than later, would be in the best interest of the payroll long term. Smart thinking.
  13. QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Mar 22, 2009 -> 06:24 PM) First of all, people should learn the difference between socialism and communism,it is NOT the same thing, many of our allies in Europe have socialist programs and so do we,what do you think Medi-Care and Social Security is? Second,if Maggs wants to support HC,that's his damn right...I'm not pro or anti HC since I'm not Venezuelan, that's for them to decide who should be their leader, the reactionary Right backed by the elite have tried to topple his goverment but the people still support him,he's won every referendum they've thrown at him and he's won em fair and square according to neutral groups like America's Watch.Maggs is in his right as a Venezuelan to either support or oppose Chavez and if you don't like it,tough, this is a free country. Its also our right to call Magglio whatever the hell we want to call him. If you don't like it, tough, this is a free country.
  14. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Mar 22, 2009 -> 02:36 PM) My Guess: 2009: $500K 2010: $2.5M 2011: $5M 2012: $7M 2013: $9.5M team option, $500K If Gavin puts up the type of numbers that Garland put up while he was here (32 starts, 220 IP, 4.5 era, and keeps the ball down) that is a great, great deal.
  15. QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Mar 22, 2009 -> 02:30 PM) None. Ouch. Any word on option years? Maybe a 5th year at 10ish million?
  16. So how many years of FA did we buy out from Gavin? One or two?
  17. QUOTE (BearSox @ Mar 22, 2009 -> 09:09 AM) Come on now, it's been like 40 AB's. If he gets a hit in his next AB, his BA will shoot up to about .320. Wasn't he hitting something like .500 over his first twenty ABs?
  18. Nice work Steve Trying to give Jason's penis thread a run for the 2009 Thread of the Year I see?
  19. Excellent numbers so far guys! Keep them coming! Even if we can get up to 15 or 20 people, everyone will get to play for sure.

I wanted to bump this thread to add this book. It goes against most things I look for in books. Personally I have never been big into the biography thing, but this was excellent. I also am totally a Paul McCartney guy, but this book about John Lennon just brings him to life in a way I never knew him before. It was amazing. http://www.keenzo.com/showproduct.asp?M=HA...0487&ref=GB
  21. Boy Kroeger has really fallen off as the players in camp have narrowed. He is down to .302 now.
  22. QUOTE (BearSox @ Mar 21, 2009 -> 10:29 PM) In that case, we should put Nix on the DL and go from there. That makes perfect sense. It also gives us the chance to send him to Charlotte on a rehab while we decide how our roster looks and if he we really want him around.
  23. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 21, 2009 -> 07:14 PM) Gammons says the rumor is Boras wants $50 million for him and will send him to Japan if he doesn't get it. The draft must be slotted. So if you are Washington, is it worth it to pony up $50 million for what could be the face to rescue your franchise, or the face that sinks it if he either is the next Brien Taylor or Mark Prior?
  24. They said during the game today that he was only hitting 87 on the gun, and to not be surprised if he is not the fifth starter at the beginning of the season.
  25. I imagine everyone is out dancing today...
