  1. Hopefully this a sign that an Obama adminsitration will be more bipartisian that his 97% of the time voting with Democrats would indicate.
  2. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 24, 2008 -> 11:15 AM) Whether you realize it or not, you just gave the entire reason for why we have to break these banks up and why they can never even come close to approaching this size again. Starting with Freddie and Fannie, which are the crux of this entire problem in the first place.
  3. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 24, 2008 -> 10:57 AM) The Sox payroll was 120M last year? http://blog.sportscolumn.com/story/2008/4/1/231932/3450
  4. QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Nov 24, 2008 -> 10:19 AM) My point being a Crosby / Alexei combo may be better than an Alexei / Nix or Getz combo... He will get paid $5.25 million next year. I am not really intersted in spending that kind of money on a backup, when we have other holes that could be filled with that money.
  5. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Nov 23, 2008 -> 09:06 PM) Here is the bacon-wrapped version. http://bacontoday.com/turbaconducken-turdu...apped-in-bacon/ I love that there is a "bacontoday.com" website. That warms my artery clogged heart.
  6. QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Nov 24, 2008 -> 09:59 AM) I would take him as a backup to Alexei. Who is penciled in as backup, right now? Wilson Betemit and Chris Getz
  7. Wasn't Edwin Jackson one of the guys rumored to be in the Paul Konerko to LAD negotiations after 2003 or 2004?
  8. QUOTE (klaus kinski @ Nov 24, 2008 -> 09:27 AM) I cant believe they are this insensitive to the economic conditions-What harm would come if they held the line a year? Guess the rich people are trying to recover stock market losses from us. The interesting thing is that the 2007 payroll was 109 million and it went to 120 million in 2008. That increase? 10%. As I have been saying for years, the Sox are a zero sum organization. Whatever comes in, goes out. Its the price we pay for having the 5th highest payroll in baseball last year.
  9. Alexei is moving over to SS, so I don't see this as a need.
  10. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 24, 2008 -> 08:03 AM) If we are using a purely stats argument as Silver would, then those sorts of chance occurances - accidental mistaken number transposition and the line - in theory, that should help neither candidate (or both equally). In theory. Exactly. And yet they haven't. And of course they are ignored by this particular statistical analysis to paint one side of the picture.
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 23, 2008 -> 08:50 PM) Marx/Engels: WSJ Well there we go... Citibank was going to fail, the Feds had to step in and stop it.
  12. QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Nov 24, 2008 -> 08:01 AM) Isnt any different? Or shows some of the same characteristics? You said animals have no rights, kid basically have no rights either.
  13. QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Nov 23, 2008 -> 02:28 PM) See, thats just not right, dogs dont have more rights. If Michael Vick did something to a person that equated to what he did to those dogs, he would be on death row. Every night Animal Planet reruns Animal Cops and Animal Precinct, all you have to do is watch 1 show and you know that dogs and cats dont have anywhere near the same rights as people, people will damn near starve a dog to death and can have the dog returned to them if they promise to feed it and take better care of it. And I would like to state that i dont believe Dogs and Cats should have equal rights to people, but I do believe there should be laws designed to protect dogs and cats from people who abuse them. The child welfare system in this country isn't any different. It is a daily occurence where kids get neglected or abused by partents who are drug addicts, who get them back after saying they will take better care of them, feed them etc.
  14. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 23, 2008 -> 08:47 PM) Silver Now how does that factor in the counties where Frankin gained 100 votes while Coleman gained none?
  15. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 03:22 PM) It wouldn't be shocking ^^^ It wouldn't surprise me at all.
  16. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 03:15 PM) So anyone know why the market decided to go up 6% today? The announcement of our new SecTres is what really got the market going. The funny part is that the NYT announced that Hill had accepted SecState, and the market sold off two hundred points. Then she came out and denied, and it rallied through the highs to finish on the highs of the day
  17. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 03:09 PM) Unless Visa or Mastercard go under. But I haven't heard any news of that happening. There hasn't even been a whisper of those places.
  18. QUOTE (Texsox @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 02:55 PM) We haven't lost too many via free agency, so its been a short list. Maggs is about the only starter I can think of this century who bolted. Crede will be next. But I could also toss in the mix any player who looks for the biggest paycheck and we call them greedy. Talk about how they should look for a chance to win, etc. Read the Boras comments for examples. It's a business and we shouldn't ask one side (owners) to treat it like a business, then expect players to sign for less, be loyal, etc. thereby not treating it like a business. I will shocked if one person changes their opinion of Joe Crede (good or bad) based on the contract he gets this off season. The only way that changes if he comes out and rips the White Sox for some reason this winter or spring.
  19. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 02:58 PM) I've heard several reports urging people to forgo giving the usual gift cards for presents this year because the store might be out of business by the time they get to use it. If you do, stick with an actual credit card brand gift card ( IE Visa or Mastercard etc) vs a storebrand. If you go with a store, go with somewhere you know will be around, like a Target or Wal-Mart.
  20. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 02:49 PM) bankrupt, insolvent, government control, whatever the terminology, I think its not going to happen. Fair enough. After seeing as many places as we have go under, they are running through all of the classic steps towards failure. I tend to go with history. I could very well be wrong though
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 02:50 PM) Circuit city is actually still honoring those. Went with Target, Applebee's, and Kohl's. All 3 will get used fairly quickly by my family. Sharper Imagine cancelled all of theirs when they went under. Many other companies honor them for a fraction of their face value. That being said, the three you went with should be fine, but I would be most scared of casual dining places. I read a prediction that 17 food chains will fail in 2009.
  22. QUOTE (Texsox @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 02:52 PM) What I am saying (again) is we rip players who leave via free agency, call them greedy, etc. I think they deserve the exact same understanding we give the team when they trade someone. So while no one here is mourning the loss of Dye, neither should we get pissed when a player leaves on their own. You know the same feeling both ways. Tit for Tat. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. I don't know how many different ways I can say it. This shows there are no loyalties in baseball. So fans should not expect loyalty from players and not teams. It's all a business. No we don't "rip" them just for leaving in free agency. Maggs is the only example you have, and he isn't ripped just because he left. He is ripped because he lied about the organization and ripped them for no good reason. Sox fans always have respect for those who have respected the organization. I seem to remember a lot of people pissed off at the White Sox when Frank Thomas was shown the door in a less than classy manner as well. I also remember him getting some helluva rounds of applause when he came back here.
  23. QUOTE (Texsox @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 02:38 PM) Because we dumped him. If he showed the same loyalty, and left on his own, we'd be talking Maggs level hate. /just sayin' How many people hate Robin Ventura on this message board for leaving as a free agent? Just sayin.
  24. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 02:42 PM) If they actually fail, as in bankruptcy, yes. What I am saying is, I believe they will not actually go bankrupt. Balta- I have about 100,000 points on a Citi travel rewards type card. I'm not going to take them out. You do whatever makes you most comfortable. I just feel the chances of C going bankrupt are very, very low. Banks don't declare bankruptcy though. The get shutdown by the Fed bank. Its a different mechanism.
  25. QUOTE (DBAHO @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 02:24 PM) There was a good point made in this article also; Again, these are the types of reasons that company's are using TARP money to shore up dividends and stock prices.
