QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Feb 29, 2008 -> 09:18 AM) No, he is talking about the Ukranian president who was poisoned in the middle of his presidential campaign, and his face became all troll-like in the process. It was pretty horrifying Ah gotcha.

Sox vs. Rockies 2/28
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 28, 2008 -> 10:39 PM) Anderson could put up an OPS of 3.500 this spring and he still wouldn't make the big league squad. And it'd be the right call. After last season, he really does need to perform in AAA again before he can be given another shot. I'll bet if he has a good spring, he makes the team. If Anderson plays to his potential, he makes the team better than anyone else does, and I think if Anderson really did grow up this year, they have no problems putting him out on the field. Plus if his attitude hasn't changed and he is hitting, playing him is the easiest way to increase his value to trade him.

LOST!!!!
I guess they had been answering too many questions in the last few episodes because this one just opened up about a million more questions. We at least now know why Daniel is all messed up, and why he cried when Oceanic 815 was announced as being found with no survivors.

DEM Primaries/Candidates thread
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 28, 2008 -> 09:19 PM) So, let's see...Imagine how the press would respond if McCain had been endorsed by a controversial religious figure. A religious figure who had attacked another religion vehemently. Let's imagine it was a Protestant religious leader, who had attacked the Catholic church, calling it the "Antichrist" and "The great Whore". Now let's imagine that unlike Senator Obama, Senator McCain had not only actively sought out the support of this controversial religious figure, but added that he was "Very proud" to have his support. And Hell, on top of that, let's throw in a statement from the Catholic League President Bill Donahue, the same guy who South Park had taking over the Papacy, condemning McCain for accepting his support and calling on McCain to repudiate it in the same way Mr. Obama did with Farrakhan. Now wouldn't you imagine that the press would be all over that? Not only is it strikingly similar to Obama and how he's been hit on the Nation of Islam, but it's on the Republican side and the media hates Republicans. And not only that, but whereas Obama disavowed that supporter, McCain happily accepted it. Wouldn't you imagine that would be a pretty big scandal? Because as far as the NYT, AP, and Reuters are concerned, it doesn't appear to be newsworthy at all. And while I"m at it, I can't even find it mentioned on MSNBC. I seem to remember George W Bush getting creamed in the media for speaking at Bob Jones university.

For GOP only
QUOTE(YahtzeeSox @ Feb 28, 2008 -> 08:11 PM) Vote Ron Paul. He is the only honest candidate! I'll be honest, the big thing I have learned about Ron Paul in this election cycle is that he is hard-headed and can't admit when he is wrong or defeated, and I am not sure how that would be any different than our last two Presidents have acted. I'd have a lot more respect for the guy if he knew when he was beaten, because that would at least demonstrate to me that he wouldn't drag the whole country down just to prove he was right, unlike Clinton and Bush.

Oil prices reach new record high - $102/bbl
QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Feb 28, 2008 -> 12:00 PM) Dumb question: wouldn't cutting rates be the worst thing to do right now for inflation? If we're facing a stagnating economy anyway, and lower rates = weak dollar and higher oil prices... why wouldn't hiking rates help? Shouldn't that boost the dollar which I wager would also reduce oil prices because the dollar would be seen as a more attractive investment? To be fair, I understand what they are trying to do. They are trying to make up for lost GDP in the industries connected to the mortgage problems, and make up for it in the pretty unconnected world of exporting. I know I had heard that the losses from the mortgage industry had been about 1.1 percentage points of GDP, while the gains from the lower dollar in export increases and import decreases had been about 1.0 percentage points. They are trying to keep the country out of recession, by supporting the one industry that isn't going to be affected by all of this. I wouldn't be surprised to see the dollar start to float back up as the loans start to get written off, and banking comes back. Personally I think it is shortsighted and not the smartest course of action, but I understand the strategy.

Blackhawks, United Center Question
QUOTE(Jim Spencer @ Feb 28, 2008 -> 10:17 AM) So this section is like the 300 level sections at the Cell. I sat up there once and it was nice. Not alot of traffic up there, plus I got to shake Minnie Minnoso's hand That is a very solid comparision actually. You'll like it as long as you don't expect the old barn.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Feb 28, 2008 -> 01:17 PM) Didn't Bill Cosby get ripped in the media for basically saying the same thing? You better check tomorrow's headlines before leaving for work. Except there is no racial overtone in my statement. It is all about economics. There aren't many rich people in prision, and there is a reason for that.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 28, 2008 -> 01:16 PM) Agreed, education is a huge key. In which case, if you want better equality and better education, you have to look at how schools are funded (ala Kozol's Savage Inequalities). Lots of the problem is the way we fund schools. Property tax funding just reinforces the monetary differences between communities. The system where I live has a HUGE poverty rate. The school my wife teaches in has a 70% poverty rate. The differences between us and any of the adjoining communities are huge, because their tax bases are way bigger. Their systems are better funded because of that. In other words there is no way to catch up. They really need to look at a bigger picture of school funding to iron out those issues. In reality it isn't sex or race that has been shown to be the biggest indicator of how people will do in life, it is socio-economic backround.

Education is the parole officer for the prison of poverty. We HAVE to catch kids at an early age and convince them to have hope in their lives (lack of hope IMO is what makes it easier to commit crimes.) and that education is the key to breaking those cycles. Once they get to adult age and are doing the things that they are getting put into jail for, it is too late. Those behaviors and attitudes are so ingrained, you basically have no chance of changing them. You have to catch kids EARLY.

General Iraq War Thread
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 28, 2008 -> 11:13 AM) Sort of. We've had one specific, like the one that last for a while that was titled something like "Democrats want war to go badly!!!!!1!111!!!1" or whatever. I may have changed it to a general thread at some point. IIRC it turned into the death count thread and got pretty ugly, which is why it was ended.

Oil prices reach new record high - $102/bbl
QUOTE(iamshack @ Feb 28, 2008 -> 12:56 PM) Well, you know how we do things in the United States that would require a change in our comfortable way of doing things, or something that might actually require some sort of sacrifice- we wait until we absolutely must act! Honestly, we should have known it would take some combination of circumstances like we have now, what NSS was speaking to, what probably is "The Perfect Storm" of events that has forced not only the scientists and the government to recognize there is a crisis, but also the American people, and therefore, the huge corporations as well. If there is a real beauty to Capitalism, it is that plenty of entrepreneurs will recognize that there is huge money to be made right now, and therefore, progress will occur. Such progress obviously would be easier made should the feds get their stuff together and realize that subsidies are necessary, rather than pulling current subsidies off the table (as was recently done), but I have full faith that Mr. Obama will get the ball rolling in a big way when he takes office in 11 months. Guys like Al Gore for example...

Bloomberg: "I'm not running for President"
QUOTE(bmags @ Feb 28, 2008 -> 11:13 AM) I was a huge Elliot Spitzer fan when he was bustin the music industry and what not, but I've heard his current governor term hasn't been that great. That made me sad. He lost me when he pretty much sued the head of the NYSE because he made too much money.
