County Board Passes Budget
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 2, 2008 -> 07:33 PM) The worst part is that its the County. The taxes that go to the state or the city, though still somewhat wasteful, at least goes to worthwhile services more often than not. The county, other than the jails, provides almost nothing of use for that tax money. What they do put money into could be done by private industry soooooo much more efficiently. Cook County pretty much is Chicago. Think how much government waste we could get rid of by eliminating it?

CREDE CREDE CREDE
QUOTE(knightni @ Mar 2, 2008 -> 07:44 PM) I'm stunned by this. Crede>>>>>>>Fields at 3B defensively. NO doubt about that. If anyone of that pair is playing 1B it is Fields. I still think our 1B in waiting is Jermaine Dye.

CREDE CREDE CREDE
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Mar 2, 2008 -> 04:28 PM) Sign Crede to a $5 million contract instead of nontendering him. See if he can play during spring training. If he can, trade him for garbage maybe even throw in some money, or just pay him the $5 million to sit down. Yeah that makes sense. The White Sox refuse to pay over slot in the draft. Would they risk $5.1 million in order to acquire a couple of C prospects? The Sox value older minor leaguers over younger ones. They don't draft worth a s*** anyway, and seem to do a much better job of aquiring minor leaguers than drafting them. It totally makes sense that they would use Crede to target minor leaguers to rebuild their system, or spin off into the next major leaguer that Kenny trades for.

As the last person on the planet to see Superbad, I can officially say that was an excellent movie.

2008 MLB Catch-All Thread
QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Mar 2, 2008 -> 03:09 PM) The Cubs are going to regret the Soriano contract and so many ways. And unless they eat a lot of it, they will never be able to trade him. But he does put fat yuppy asses in the seats. Not at Wrigley he doesn't. They sold out before him, and they would sell out if he never played again.

So Brian Anderson's hitting...
QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Mar 2, 2008 -> 03:24 PM) Fair enough, I'm thinking in spring training mode now. But the point stands. If it were just a little thing, it wouldn't be a problem. Kenny Williams, more than anyone else on the planet, wants Anderson to succeed to pad his ego, and shut up the Chris Young talk. They wouldn't just make stuff up when it is in their best interests for Anderson to be their CF. I can't see how anyone would think otherwise.

QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Mar 2, 2008 -> 12:45 PM) The Trib seems to think Randy Moss could leave NE. Randy Moss, I call your bluff. Moss is a selish piece of s***. He will go whereever the money is, I don't care if it is Boise Idaho.

CREDE CREDE CREDE
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Mar 2, 2008 -> 01:27 PM) I'm of the belief Joe Crede will be better than Josh Fields in 2008. I am one of the few that hasn't annointed Josh Fields an All Star yet. Home runs are all he's proven thus far. If Crede plays 2008 anywhere like he did the first 5 months of 2006 before his back gave out again, he would ridiculous to move unless the Sox get something useful for him, which when Noah Lowry and his swollen elbow draws excitement, appears doubtful. Sure. Let Crede play, pay him the $5 million a year, block Fields, and get nothing at all for Crede. It makes sense to me.

So Brian Anderson's hitting...
QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Mar 2, 2008 -> 03:19 PM) It's got nothing to do with his preparation. It's romantic to think these young players are taking batting practice at 8 pm Saturday night, but it's not happening. Funny at 8pm on a Saturday night, I would expect him to be on a baseball field most of the time.

So Brian Anderson's hitting...
QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Mar 2, 2008 -> 03:15 PM) I will never understand why fans expect a young 20-something ballplayer to not have a life. If you aren't ready on the field, it doesn't look go to be putting more work into your social life. It has nothing to do with having a life, its about doing your job first, then having a life.

County Board Passes Budget
QUOTE(kapkomet @ Mar 2, 2008 -> 12:32 PM) You really will see a shift if something like that starts to happen... especially on the property taxes. Indiana is in the middle of a property tax revolt, it could be interesting.

County Board Passes Budget
Indiana welcomes Cook County with its 6% sales taxes, and much lower property taxes

So Brian Anderson's hitting...
There is no doubt in my mind that Anderson has the biggest upside of anyone on this team in the CF group. I think both Ozzie and Kenny know that. If he really did come to camp with his head screwed on straight, he benefits this team by huge amounts if he can open as our CF. If nothing else, maybe the money that a guy like Rowand got for being the type of player that Anderson should be will motivating enough to him to fly straight. Plus you know Kenny wants to be able to say he picked the right CF out of the log jam of CFs (Rowand, Anderson, Sweeney, and Young) that we had at one time. That alone convinces me that Anderson will get a real shot if he has reformed himself.

1 in 100 US Adults behind bars
QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Mar 1, 2008 -> 10:23 AM) You mean its not? Condoms in schools, birthcontrol pills at clinics where parents don't even have to approve. Where else do you want them? Vending machines in the school cafateria? Yet they have to have written permission from their parents to take a stinking aspirin in school...

GOP Primaries/Candidates thread
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 29, 2008 -> 04:30 PM) Senator Claire McCaskill, D-MO, who has endorsed Sen. Obama in the campaign, has introduced a bill to the Senate that would define "Natural Born Citizens" as written in the constitution to include any person born to any citizen of the United States while serving in the active or reserve components of the United States Armed Forces. Senator Obama is now co-sponsoring the bill. That is classy.

DEM Primaries/Candidates thread
I am sorry but that exchange is just hilarious. All of the big candidates are excellent at working crowds, or they wouldn't be where they are at right now. Guys like Fred Thompson and Bill Richardson who had might have had better positions than most, were blown out of the race for the exact reason that they couldn't work a crowd like the surviving candidates.

LOST!!!!
QUOTE(Brian @ Feb 29, 2008 -> 11:50 AM) I like the Jeremy Davies character. My head hurts after this weeks episode. No doubt. We are going to go back and watch the episode again, because I am curious about some of the characters in the 96 and 04, and if any of the secondary characters were carryovers or not that I missed. There is almost always something that is portrayed one way, but means something completely different in retrospect.

DEM Primaries/Candidates thread
QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Feb 29, 2008 -> 12:46 PM) The Clinton campaign just doesn't like to make sense. So, if Obama doesn't manage to erase ALL of your 20+ pt leads, and you still hang on to a small victory, that's a bad sign for Obama? So if he is supposed to win big, what is she still doing in the race? That is such a crock of s***.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 29, 2008 -> 11:42 AM) Ok, deal. I'll proofread your LTE to the Tribune asking why they're not covering this if you'd like Eh, I don't get too wound up in endorsements, and I think too much is made of religion in this country anyway. Its one of the cheapest fear tactics that exist in politics today.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 29, 2008 -> 11:30 AM) And so you'd therefore agree that McCain should get the same treatment over how he's honored to stand on the stage with the guy I pointed out earlier? I'd have no problem with it.

DEM Primaries/Candidates thread
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 29, 2008 -> 11:27 AM) I think the big difference between both of those cases and the Obama case is that Obama can't exactly tell a person not to come out and say he's voting for him, while GWB and McCain are actively going out and courting those folks. If Obama is going to be grilled over exactly what word he uses to reject their support, then shouldn't the guys gladly taking on that support get a much more intensive grilling? That's my point, he did. There were stories about guys like Pat Robertson running the Presidency like they did the Pope with Kennedy. They grilled Bush really hard over that.
