Cost of campaign advertising to hit $3,000,000,000.00
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Oct 16, 2007 -> 09:31 AM) well, except for the fact that Reagan and Clinton were pretty poor when they started their lives. Were they poor when they ran for President?

There will never be a middle class or lower President with this system in place.- Al Gore: Nobel Peace Prize Winner
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 15, 2007 -> 03:58 PM) Can Al Gore do anything between now and Super Tuesday that will not be viewed instantly as a sign of him getting into the race? "Al Gore has regrown his beard. Does he want to return to the 1800's tradition of Bearded Presidents?" "Al Gore has lost weight. Could this be a sign he's ready to declare?" "Al Gore killed and drank the blood of a puppy. Could this now mean he's interested in the position of Senate Majority Leader instead of President?" I thought that was just what liberals did on weekends?- For GOP only

QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Oct 15, 2007 -> 02:20 PM) well it hasn't happened yet.. but saying that the Twins value Hunter possibly even more than Santana, that says an aweful lot. If the Twins re-sign Hunter, look for them to get a monster package this offseason for Santana. That leaves Rowand and Jones left, for some reason i can see the Rangers signing Jones. That leaves Rowand for us... i just hope KW doesn't over pay for him. If JD is getting 11 mill/ season, Rowand should at a maximum get 10 mill/season. If ARod opts out, I do see the Rangers trying to make a splash in the free agent market. I imagine they would try to get more pitching, but there really isn't any worthwhile starters out there IIRC. Maybe they could make a run at Mariano?- A signing out of the Dominican
QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Oct 15, 2007 -> 01:58 PM) The bonus won't even crack the top 10 international signings this season. Edward Salcedo (represented by Boras) is reportedly asking for $3.5M, which would still be a better investment than spending the same amount of money on Darin Erstad. I am sure I will get a "Yes, but" answer here, but I will ask this anyway... This is the largest investment the Sox have made on a new player outside of the draft, correct?- Rowand Wants Big Money
QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Oct 13, 2007 -> 05:26 PM) Its looking more and more like the Twins will re-sign Hunter. http://www.startribune.com/507/story/1479785.html THat leaves Rowand and Jones..since Jones should and will get more money than Rowand, he is the best option for us. His agent is just obviously doing his job. He wont get that deal from anybody! If Hunter wants 5 years for 75 mill to stay in Minny, than Rowand shouldn't have a problem with 4 years @ 11 mil/ season. Maybe up to 48 million in incentives. Wow, the last thing I expected to see was the Twins re-signing Hunter. That changes the face of the off-season quickly. It also makes the guys who are out there much more valuable.- Do I go?
QUOTE(Texsox @ Oct 15, 2007 -> 12:22 PM) IIRC it was during the early 70s when foreign banks were demanding payments on US debt. Nixon made a number of changes that caused problems. I'm certain Kap or SS could fill in the blanks if they are reading this thread. Don't get me started on the dinosaur that was the gold standard. Rest in peace, please.- For GOP only

QUOTE(The Critic @ Oct 14, 2007 -> 12:16 PM) I thought he said during the interview with TBS that he can't do day games because of work, but he makes all the night games. When I went to The Jake, I was two sections over and I didn't really notice him at all. I don't think I'd buy a ticket in his section, though - that drum would drive me nuts. Anyone remember when the Blackhawks had the four or five drummers walking around during games? I wanted to strangle those guys. The one guy I hate most of all, well besides Ronnie Woo-Woo, is the opera singing hotdog vendor from Detroit. I would run his ass over if I had the chance.- A signing out of the Dominican
$600,000 is a lot of money. Keep in mind our first round pick, who has pitched in college baseball got $1.2 million, and we have a lot more history to work with there, not to mention he is a lefty who throws 97 mph. That is a HUGE amount of money for a 16 year old kid, I just hope it works out.- For GOP only
QUOTE(YASNY @ Oct 15, 2007 -> 02:44 AM) Thanks Mike. Very well said. As the son of a pair of native Kentuckians who was born and raised in the Chicago area (me, not the parents) I can tell you that there was, and apparently still is, a prejudice against southerners. Yet, it seems that it's 'OK' to hold those views. I've spoken out against a few prejudicial remarks on this site in past and was told I was overreacting. I wasn't. It sucks to be the recipiant of stereotypical remarks. What sucks even more is due to the fact that I'm a white American male, I have no reason to offended about anything that is said. There was a discussion on this site a couple/few years ago about whether or not the term "Jap" was derogitory. I took the stance that it was not. I considered it the same as calling someone from England a "Brit". But, I was eventually convinced that I was wrong about that. It came down to the fact if a person of Japanese heritage was offended by the use of the word, then it was inapproriate to use it. As a result, I no longer use the word. I just wish people would step back and take the same attitude toward southern Americans that they seem to be so eager to embrace when it comes to anybody else who is somewhat "different". And it is those very things that build hatred and resentment, once you get past stereotypes. Its too bad as we try to unite, we add more *'s, which makes those goals impossible.- Soxtalk Straw Poll (GOP edition)
This was a tough one, as I really don't agree with any of these guys fully either. My vote came between Ron Paul, Huckabee, and Thompson, but I ended up voting for Paul just for the hell of it. Each of them has something in their platform I really like, and each also has something I really hate. For example, I really like most of Paul's economic stances, but don't think his Iraq stance is realistic. I like the Huckabee gets Iraq, IMO,, but am not much of a fan of his religious emphasis. Its too early for a firm commitment from me, as no one has came out and won my vote yet. Far from it.- Soxtalk Straw Poll (Democrat edition)
I had to vote "other" as in "none of the above". Tried as I did, when it came down to the issues, I just don't agree with anyone in this group on the direction the country needs to go.- A signing out of the Dominican
QUOTE(WHITESOXRANDY @ Oct 15, 2007 -> 08:32 AM) Why don't they sign about 30 more guys like this ? So you would have your organization out giving 30 sixteen year olds $600,000 each? Wow.- A signing out of the Dominican
QUOTE(False Alarm @ Oct 14, 2007 -> 11:02 PM) $600,000. http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...-home-headlines $600k for a 16 year old. Well the minor league obsessives are getting what they wanted... This kid must be something else if he is getting over a half of a million dollars and he wouldn't even be out of high school yet in the US. There really isn't a way to sound much more serious about the farm system than moves like this. Supposedly he has a chance to be "special", man I hope so.- The Official [SCRUBS] Thread

Did anyone else listen to talking baseball this morning? Speficially did anyone else hear Bruce Levine say that people behind the scenes are saying George Steinbrenner is suffering from some form of dementia? Can anyone else confirm or deny hearing that anywhere else?- Hahn interviewing for Cardinals' GM job
QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Oct 13, 2007 -> 02:24 AM) Then, according to the credit your are giving him, he does a great job. I wouldn't say the sole reason, but he was probably the biggest reason Buehrle resigned. I call BS on that too. The Sox have gotten excellent values in all of their contract extensions, except for maybe Contreras, and that was because the chances of him falling apart were too big. In reality, when he extended, his contract was a steal for the numbers he would have gotten as a free agent. Pretty much you can say that with all of our extensions.- Hahn interviewing for Cardinals' GM job
