QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Oct 10, 2007 -> 09:46 AM) That's why we need Gravel in 2008! No thanks, the driveway is already paved

GOP Primaries/Candidates thread
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 10, 2007 -> 11:41 AM) This could be a real worry for the GOP. If you could peel off 5% of the minutemen-type-voters with a Tancredo ticket, or a couple percent of actual libertarians with a Paul ticket, that's the sort of thing that could Nader-ize the eventual Republican nominee in the General. In the category of "just sayin'" Ron Paul also fits the Unity Party basic platform of small government, balanced budget and ending Iraq.

GM on strike
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 10, 2007 -> 11:17 AM) Like the GM and Ford strikes, this may get the workers some relief short term, but it will end up biting them in the ass long term. Not a smart move. This one could be ugly. Chrysler has new management, and they sound like they are ready to fight.

Do I go?
QUOTE(Texsox @ Oct 10, 2007 -> 09:05 AM) All true. We took joy in winning the cold war, and we sent aid. We even sent aid during the cold war. I remember grain shipments going over there during the early 80's.

Iraq General Thread
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 10, 2007 -> 09:12 AM) If Hillary is President, true. If any other Dem is President, I'd say, false. Only 3 said they would completely leave Iraq IIRC.

Konerko Speculation
QUOTE(Al Lopez's Ghost @ Oct 9, 2007 -> 04:38 PM) I was listening to Boers & Bernstein at 4:30 today, and Boers said that this deal is being discussed by the Angels and Sox: Konerko and Garland for Figgins, Kochman and Shields. FWIW. Is there supposed to be a moratorium on this kind of stuff until after the World Series? This is probably just talk, but hey it makes for a busy message board. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Oct 9, 2007 -> 05:36 PM) You aren't going to be able to trade Crede until he shows he's healthy. I'm pretty sure if the Angels offered KW the trade you proposed, he would take it in a heartbeat. The Angels didn't want Crede last year before he had back surgery, they sure as heck arent' going to give up anything for him now. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Oct 9, 2007 -> 05:45 PM) I love him too, but he was not very good down the stretch and I'm a bit concerned about him slowing down drastically due to being drastically overworked for the past couple seasons. That said, if he's healthy he's a stud reliever. You see Shields a lot more than anyone else, was his velocity down, could he really be hurting? QUOTE(Kalapse @ Oct 9, 2007 -> 07:01 PM) Then I have a question. If Kotchman has shown enough power potential at the major league level to lead you to believe that he's already an equal/better offensive player than Konerko then why the hell would Stoneman be willing to do a Kotchman + substantial piece for Konerko deal? The reason he'd want Konerko would be to provide power at a position they're currently not getting it from (1B, Kotchman) but if Konerko isn't really an upgrade then why would a deal like this even be talked about? Throw in Stoneman's track record of refusing to trade youth/potential for experience/proven commodities and the discussion of a potential deal should halt immediately. So to put simply, if Kotchman is really as good as you believe he is then why would the Angels even think about making a deal like this? I also agree 100% with the second part of your post, well put. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Oct 9, 2007 -> 09:09 PM) Depends how desperate Arte Moreno is right now. If they can't get A-Rod, my guess is he forces Stoneman to make a big deal. Remember they were after a big bat last off-season and they ended up with Garry Matthews Jr. These two posts go together well. The Angels made a lot of promises when Moreno took over. He hasn't really delivered on them, and maybe Jason can correct me if I am wrong, but it sounds like the natives are starting to get restless. They need a "big name" player to show that the Angels are serious about winning NOW. Konerko is the kind of name you can throw at the fans as a guy who can hold his own after Vlad. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Oct 9, 2007 -> 09:20 PM) 2 quick Arod factoids I heard from Olney today. Boras is looking for an 11 year deal for his 32 year old client and according to Buster the Yankees are prepared to offer Alex a contract that averages $31M a year. Now tell me, how and why would the Sox compete with that? They wouldn't but then again I would be in shock if this was true. ARod is public enemy #1 in New York. Especially if they don't bring back Joe Torre, I see a TON of change in the Yankees next year. I think you might actually see the Yankees minus ARod, Posada, and Rivera to start with. They have a ton of decesions to make.

Buddy Bell joining the White Sox
QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Oct 9, 2007 -> 06:21 PM) I've asked a number of people a number of times if they read the White Sox message boards. The answer I've consistently heard is no. Now it's possible they may be lying and I'm sure someone will add a post correcting me or saying just the opposite, that so and so reads it as does so and so. But thinking they'll read this board, feel shame, and do a better job? Highly doubtful. They don't come here to gather ideas for personnel or development moves, that's for sure. I did have a very high ranking White Sox guy tell me "they're message boards, and message boards have a lot of misconceptions, bad assumptions, and misinformation". Quote. They are one heck of a lot more upset about 2007 than anyone here. Seriously, if anything thinks they are somekind of crusader or activist by posting stuff on a message board, you got it all wrong. NO one is changing a damned thing based on something on an anonymus message board. That is just insane. BTW, I love the Sox official's quote. Perfect.

Qaeda Goes Dark After a US Slip
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 9, 2007 -> 12:21 PM) Interestingly, the WaPo is running with the same story but with seemingly a totally different timeline (and, if you pay attention, the 2 are actually incompatible; one says that ABC news leaked the file in the morning, the other says it did not begin downloading until about midday). This was also interesting... http://mypetjawa.mu.nu/archives/189700.php The US might have had the video a day before this happened...

The environment thread
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 9, 2007 -> 12:30 PM) The amount of mercury in those things is super-tiny. From what I read, its such a small amount that it pales in comparison to other things in your house. But I do not recall now where I read that. Perhaps someone with more knowledge on this can shed some more light. That's good to know, but now how about when thousands of these things started getting crushed in the bottoms of landfills and start seeping into the water supply? Seriously Mercury? In this day and age?

The environment thread
So why aren't the new lightbulbs being pushed so hard clearly warned about having mercury in them? Having a 2 year old and another one on the way, I don't think I feel the same about having them in my house now. All it takes is one dropped bulb to be exposed, correct? http://businessandmedia.org/articles/2007/...1008160623.aspx

Anyone else notice that Hillary is hiring Sandy "Making Copies" Berger as a foreign policy advisor to her campaign? That is kind of interesting seeing as the guy already got into trouble for lying to federal investigators and is banned from receiving national security info until Sept of 2008. Not to mention he is now a convicted criminal. I guess those backround checks still aren't coming back correctly? I wonder if anything would be said if say Rudy Guiliani hired Scooter Libby to work on his staff?

Stupid network question
QUOTE(kapkomet @ Oct 8, 2007 -> 03:30 PM) Someone might have protected it. The permissions weren't set right. They only had the person who created a file able to edit and save it. It took them long enough to figure it out!

Trading Fields and/or Danks for a star
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 8, 2007 -> 08:41 PM) And this year has proven just how true it is for Manny. He basically took a vacation during the heat of the pennant race, AGAIN, he played lazy a lot, again, and his numbers were well off from last year. If he is an analog for Cabrera, then all the more reason to avoid him. Especially since we are talking about a guy who is going to be looking at something between Manny and Arod numbers when it comes to a contract.

Tough question? It must be from a plant. http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/ Listen to Clinton's verbal spat with a Iowa voter over the weekend. WASHINGTON (CNN) — Sen. Hillary Clinton often holds several town-hall events a day as she campaigns for the Democratic presidential nomination. But a particular gathering in northern Iowa Sunday is the subject of several media reports after the New York Democrat engaged in a verbal tussle with a questioner over Iran. At an event in North Hampton, Iowa, a questioner took issue with Clinton's recent Senate vote calling on President Bush to formally call the Iranian Revolutionary Guard a terrorist organization. He argued that such a distinction confers the president with the ability to invade the country. "Why should I support your candidacy . . . if it appears you haven't learned from your past mistakes?" the questioner asked, referring to Clinton's vote to authorize the use of military force in Iraq. Clinton began by telling the questioner "the premise of the question is wrong," and argued the measure calls for the terrorist label so that sanctions can be imposed. The sanctions, she also said, will in turn "send a clear message to the leadership" and lead to stronger diplomatic efforts. The Democratic presidential front-runner then concluded by suggesting the question was planted, saying, "somebody obviously sent it to you." Rolph denied anyone had put him to the question. "I take exception," Rolph fired back. "This is my own research. Nobody sent it to me, I am offended that you would suggest that." "Let me finish," Clinton sharply responded, before saying "I apologize, I just have been asked the very same question in three other places." Have you lost your mind Mr. President???
At the core of this is Bush trying to appease Mexico. I wonder if this is Bush throwing his buddy a bone to offset the impact of the unpopular immigration raids here?
-
U.S. rushes to let in more immigrants to fill jobs
The increased raids are a nice little tricks to scare us into amnesty. We need a program that actually works, instead of the same broken racist system we have had for decades. Its broke, fix it.

Feds sue Illinois for flouting immigration law.
I know everyone went all hot button topic on us... well except for PA, but that's a different story... but I think the most important issue here is being misssed. States right versus federal rights. Does the federal government have the right to force the states to enforce the laws that the state doesn't like?
