You still need to pay the guys you aquire, and if you blow it all on a 25 million a year deal for a guy who is always hurt, that cash is gone.

His status is that he is out of options. So while he is on the 40 man roster, and therefore wouldn't have been exposed to the Rule 5, he still either needs to make a major league roster, or he needs to be exposed to waivers to be sent to the minors. He doesn't need to be on the roster all year to be kept, but he would need to clear waivers to go to the minors.

Moncada was already on the 40 with major league time when we got him.

Just cash doesn't help you if you still need to replace the guy. It also means you have less just cash later on if he inevitably gets hurt again.

It wasn't just last year. He's been over 100 innings 4 times in 7 seasons. He's also qualified for the ERA title exactly once in those 7 years.

There is no question that Rodon has the higher ceiling, but I also think it is incredibly more likely that Bassitt will give you the innings that this team needs to get through a season. The question isn't Rodon or Bassitt, it is Rodon AND Stiever or Bassitt.

This is not that point.

Not a big fan of "we lost a trade a decade ago, so we should be cowards during our actual window" as a team philosophy.
