Rob Neyer was right about Jermaine Dye being the best bargain outfielder signing last offseason but then when he did his preview on the 2005 White Sox he didn't even mention that the Sox had signed Dye.
Dye led the entire MLB in homeruns as a right fielder. Sheffield (34 HR's) and Vlad (32 HR's) hit more homers than Dye (31 HR's) but they hit some of them as a DH. Sheffield hit 27 homers as a RF'er and 7 as a DH. Vlad hit 27 homers as a RF'er and 5 as a DH. Dye hit all 31 of his homers as a RF'er.

Agreed. There's no reason to lock him up after a career year. Give him a one year deal and see what he does. Either way, the Sox will still have the rights to him for awhile and can worry about it later.
Why not? Even if you don't count Konerko as an improvement...
1.) Thome instead of Everett as our DH
2.) Vazquez instead of El Duque as our 5th starter
3.) Mackowiak instead of Timo/Willie/Blum as our utility man
4.) McCarthy instead of Vizcaino in our bullpen where he can also serve as a 6th starter
That's quite a bit of improvement.
Well, in Vazquez's worst season (4.91 ERA with Yankees in 2004) he wasn't the best 5th starter in baseball and wouldn't be if he repeats that performance. But I don't expect him to be that bad again so I think I would agree with you.
I don't believe that. Failing last year would have been worse than anything. You can't expect to win the World Series every year. The postseason is mostly about how one team gets hot and wins the whole thing.
That's probably my main worry right now. If we keep him, I hope he pitches like he did on the entire season last year (3.61 ERA, 1.23 WHIP). I'm not expecting his second half numbers (2.96 ERA, 1.14 WHIP).
For the price, we can't do better. Dye earned $4 million last season and he will earn $5 million in 2006 with a $6 million team option for 2007. The Cubs just gave Jock Jones a 3-year, $16 million contract. Dye has an .803 career OPS while Jones has a .782 career OPS.
This is so embarrassing and pathetic. Of all people to make such comments... but Hillary Clinton? ROFL, the irony is delicious.
It's nice that these great leaders of our country are laughing about a guy being shot though. Especially when the fat-headed drunk Ted Kennedy actually drowned one of his girlfriends in a drunken stupor in 1969 and forgot to call the police.
The Sox see Tucker possibly making an impact later in the season a la Jenks...

The Red Sox were interested in Tucker at one time...
