QUOTE(Soxy @ Jan 30, 2008 -> 03:05 PM) Shakespearean English is more difficult for you to understand--just like Middle English was more difficult for the lay people in the 1600s to understand, only because it is unfamiliar. Structurally it is not more complex than modern English. And I would argue that there are no "simple" or "primitive" languages (although other would disagree). Some linguists, would of course, agree with you that the language is dumbed down and was most "pure" 400 years ago. However, I take the approach that language is an active part of a culture and reflects changes within that culture. There's an interesting book (a good read even for people not in the field) that brushes on some of these topics. Other times, ease of articulation will influence speech. In the previous example "going to" the "ng" sound is produced in the back of the mouth on the palate. The following sound /t/ is produced right behind the teeth, it is difficult to correctly produce each phone in those words--so the further back sound /ng/ is assimilated and produced with the place of articulation of the /t/ (right behind the teeth). This isn't (at least in my opinion) a dumbing down of language--perhaps it is a lazy form of speech, but it is a perfectly reasonable (and predictable part of speech).

QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 30, 2008 -> 12:06 PM) Congrats you are now at 2 stars. Someone plays with it, somehow I have 4 stars. I play with it as often as I can. . . I wonder how many stars that gives me?

2007 Soxtalk Awards - Drinking Buddy Award

QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Jan 30, 2008 -> 09:02 AM) It's a penalty since he is probably drinking a BEAST and a Sam Adams (...ummm, what was it again?) all by himself. I kid because I have so much right to do so. Triple Bock. And it is still safe and sound. As is the Avery. So. . . maybe the rumors of your decreased beer consumption are greatly exagereted, yes. . . ? -
QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Jan 30, 2008 -> 01:33 AM) The DNC will only seat Florida delegates if the outcome of the convention is not in doubt before the convention. Same with Michigan. If Obama was sailing to a win, they'd be seated as well. Well, I hope it is that way rather than the other way around. If the convention outcome was tight enough that it would be decided by whether or not to count FL delegates and the then DNC decided to seat them. . . well, I guess that would be the kind of epic election f*@k up only us Floridians can precipitate. I often wake up in a cold sweat losing sleep over the seemingly infinite stOOpidity of my adoptive state.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 29, 2008 -> 11:13 PM) Major oversight. Our resident experts on most things alcoholic, and definitely all things with a head, FlaSoxxJim is not included. Wish I had nominated him That is quite alright, as I've now decided to become an anti-social drinker anyway. -
2007 Soxtalk Awards - Post of the Year
FlaSoxxJim replied to knightni's topic in Soxtalk Awards Archive
QUOTE(knightni @ Jan 29, 2008 -> 07:04 PM) That thread is from 2008. And I think that one already has the title in the bag for next year. -
QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 30, 2008 -> 12:11 AM) I'm hearing, fwiw, that the DNC will in fact allow the Florida delegates to vote at the convention due to the turn out. Considering Florida is a swing state, it might be a major screw up if the party says, thanks for making the effort to vote but we are going to ignore your vote. I hope not, even though I'm one of the Florida Dems who probably just voted today as an academic exercise. I'm ticked off at the Florida state parties for pushing to move the primary up (like Florida needs to be in the voting screw up spotlight any more than it normally already is), and I hope the DNC sticks to their guns.

We can also expect the president to urge the Senate not to slow or derail the passage of the all-important stimulus package by trying to add pesky items like extending unemployment benefits and including rebates for seniors living wholly of of Social Security.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 26, 2008 -> 09:02 AM) I got drunk and a girl stole my Kidney in two days, how ironic :o :o

QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 25, 2008 -> 04:24 PM) "It's the day to reflect on what we have achieved and what we can be proud of in our great nation." Australia Day is celebrated on the 26th of January every year. It is the biggest nationwide public holiday that is celebrated across the country. There are no hard and fast rules on how to celebrate the day but it is great if you feel like participating any way you can. http://www.wikihow.com/Celebrate-Australia-Day I'll defer to DBAHO, but I bet ANZAC Day (April 25th) gives it a run for it's money. I unknowingly landed in Sidney on ANZAC Day and I think I was drunk for two days.

QUOTE(iamshack @ Jan 25, 2008 -> 04:14 PM) Actually, that brewpub is gone. Now it's just a regular grill...booooo...but I do like the Monte Carlo...stayed there my first trip back in 98'... Boo indeed. It wasn't the best brewpub in Vegas last time I was there (There were at least three better ones, with Gordon Biersch and the original Holy Cow being the two standouts), but it was convenient and had nice atmosphere.

I'm stunned. Really sad news.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jan 22, 2008 -> 09:12 AM) You act like this is Pakistan. I don't care if a "9/11 event" happened on January 1 of next year. This country will still go on, with a new president, on January 20, 2009. Period. I don't believe that, and in that event I don't believe transitioning power at that time would be realistic – though transitioning at the soonest practical time thereafter would be necessary. That's not any conspiracy mindset either. I just think that it would be extremely difficult to proceed with an orderly transfer of power three weeks after several-thousand US civilians were killed in a terrorist attack and when there are obviously going to be all sorts of retaliatory military plans in the offing.

Make it a good one.

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jan 21, 2008 -> 02:26 AM) - Money has to be facing the same way, and needs to be in order from singles up. I have to do that as well. I got into the habit working foodservice in high school when the optical bill counter/wrapper required all the bills to face the same way, and now I need to have all my bills facing the same way and arranged in increasing amounts. The other one is maybe more of a game than a superstition, and it's sort of me poking fun at myself. I really dislike bad/cheap beer. But whenever I play the Lotto when the jackpot is over $100 million I convince myself that my chances of winning will improve if I beerslum and drink a quart of forty of OE8, Billy Dee, Bull, or some equally bad malt liquor. The malt liquor has to be bought from the same convenience store at the Lotto ticket and at the same time, the bottle must be drunk out of a paper bag, and I have to finish the whole thing off before the 11 pm Lotto drawing. Of course, seeing as how I can count the number of times I've hit the big Lotto jackpot on no hands, maybe this little ritual is not doing me a whole lot of good. The only sports superstition I pay much attention to is not jinxing a no-hitter in progress by talking about it.

QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Jan 20, 2008 -> 12:30 AM) oh, and I can't stand Captain Morgan's and crannberry juice. One of my bowling teammates drinks that all night long, I tried it, it was terrible! That sounds like one of the worst drinks ever. Ewww.

QUOTE(Felix @ Dec 30, 2007 -> 10:17 PM) This one is for FlaSoxxJim Damn, I haven't looked at this thread in a few week. I completely missed that. Good stuff. I particularly liked Frank's Yellow Shark making a surprise appearance in place of the mudshark.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 15, 2008 -> 05:21 PM) After spending a month with my son's Macbook I was impressed in some areas, and very disappointed in others. Overall, without the blind loyalty and fanaticism, I'm not certain there truly is an overall advantage with Apple. I'd venture to say, if I tossed prices in, I'm still happier with a PC. But I will say, the coolness and overall tactile "feel" was a real eye opener. If his machine is an Intel then it can boot natively into Windows using Bootstrap, switch back and forth between the two systems with Parallels, or even combine the two on a single desktop with Unity. Every disc-based and online Windows game my kid has tried plays out better on my Powerbook running Windows than on my wife's brand new HP Pavilion.

QUOTE(mreye @ Jan 14, 2008 -> 09:18 AM) Michigan is a state funded school, right? Do they offer "How to be a Christian"? That's why someone might care. When was homosexuality elevated to the status of a religion? That's not intended to be a snarky answer. I guess you just have me wondering what sexuality-based constitutional equivalent of church/state separation one would invoke in getting up in arms about a state institution allowing this course to be taught.
