ABC News story: http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=1056288 The draft charter is supposed to be submitted tomorrow, but they can amend the interim charter and extend the deadline again without dissolution. Cutting the Sunnis out of the process now is going to either doom whatever charter they come up with (because it will be voted down by at least three provinces in the Oct. 15 referendum), or worse, lead to more insurgent activity and bring the situation still closer to civil war. Allawi and the US did quite a lot to stoke the flames of insurgency by threatening the Sunni into joining the new government or else, reminding them that their refusal to sign on would of course result in an Iraqi army that is essentially all Shia and Kurdish (and all that portends for the Sunnis) Getting Shia, Kurds and Sunnis to buy into the new constitution and goverment is critical to curbing the insurgency and avoiding civil war. American insistence at this stage that they make arbitrary deadlines simply for the sake of appearing to be on track is one of the worst things we can do at this point. Radicalisation of Sunni anti-US resistance and the increased violence between Sunnis and Shias has been in large part (certainly not entirely) a result of American demands that timetables be held sacred and nevermind the details. Federalism, oil wealth distribution, clerical power, women's rights etc., are not just minor details, and how the draft constitution takes these issues on will be the difference between acceptance and rejection in the Oct. referendum and beyond. Since we're looking at 4 more years' of occupation at current levels, we should be willing to be flexible on the timetable to a constitution so that all parties can toggether come up with something workable. If that is possible.

Hope you had a great one.

That sucks, WTell, but it doesn't sound like it was the greatest job anyway. The best way to get back at them is to find a better job you're happy with. Evil, great story, and way to put your shmuk boss in his place. If he had any integrity he'd have admitted he was being an ass and needed it to be pointed out to him.

QUOTE(DePloderer @ Aug 19, 2005 -> 06:05 PM) What a crock. You know not what you speak of. Que? Pale Ale=bottles and bitter=casks in your book? That's cool, even if you Brits are losing track of your own beer heritage. At least it sounds like at least you may still be sticking with tradition and drinking the good stuff. Travelling through England and seeing the young ones wasting their time drinking Carlings, and Stella Artois and (gasp!) Budweiser, when they have some of the world's greatest beer a handpump away was really disheartening. I try to do my part - as I can a continent away - and pay my CAMRA dues every year.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 19, 2005 -> 12:56 PM) We at least we know if they get nukes, there is a good chance that they will miss... I think nukes are kind of like horseshoes, where a miss still counts. And if they ever did get a hold of nukes that could be fired from a portable launcher, they'd have to be one of our soon to be ready cute li'l bunker busters that someone sorta left lying around.

Apple didn't invent the portable mp3 player market. Rio, Archos, and several other brands were earlier names in the market – and I have a coupel of those expensive dnosaurs in my bleeding edge hardware dustbin to prove it. iPod did revolutionize the market, however. I don't think this is the Apple/Microsoft battle all over again and I don't think the iPod will be knocked off top spot any time soon, if ever. The clickwheel patenting snafu aside, iPod is so ergonomically superior to anything, and a lot of those look and feel elements ARE patented. They also continue to add innovations (all in one clickwheel, color display and digital photo shoebox capabilities etc. They have a virtual monopoly on the third party manufacturers like Belkin and Monster that churn out all those nifty accessories. If those manufacturers decide they don't want to go back to the drawing board to produce a dozen new lines of peripherals, any iPod wanna-be is going to be a one trick pony compared to teh versitility of the iPod. A huge minus for any of the contenders is that few of them will likely see the utility in going with a firewire capable design. USB 2 is fast, but firewire and successive iteration of same are likely going to remain superior. The proprietary AAC music codec is tits compared to mp3 aor other codecs in around the 128 kbps range, and Apple lossless is even better, if less used. I don't think the fate of iTunes and the iPod are completely intertwined, although with a half-billion legal downloads they have to be doing something right. iPod users are in no way exclusively tied to that service either, that is just a misconception. Any provider that delivers mp3s is compatable with the iPod. But for shear beauty of integration, you cannot beat the ipod/iTunes marriage. i personally ragely use iTunes, unless someone gives me a gift certificate or my Pepsi bottle or Slurpee cup is giving me free downloads. Hard drive sizes of other players will catch up no doubt, but currently how many other units are out there in the 60 GB range? Finally, iPods are... Dead Sexy! [/Fat Bastard]. Apple absolutely nailed the branding effort on this one, just as they should have been able to do with the mac all those years ago. Slanguage (I may have made that word up) is evolving around the iPod, including the current Podcast revolution. Plus, as Balta's avatar indicates, iPod's rock because Stewie uses one!

rats, my dirty secret is out! Actually I'm an unabashed fan of pale ale, which is the blanket term for all traditional UK bitter and such as well as their quality counterparts produced elsewhere. Some UK beer snobs will use the designation only for bottle conditioned products and call cask conditioned versions bitter, but historically that dichotomy is in err. Apparently I am not a beer snob, merely a beer geek. Now, if you had called me a pisswater megabrew fan, there'd be some

I think the study is seriously flawed if it only looks at the final outcome of voter behavior in determining if the GOP is being helped by Fox News and the conservative talk shows. These media clearing houses present the issues and provide the talking points that frame and inform (or misinform) daily debates on these subjects - as do their counterparts on the left (including misinformation). In general, we're all more politicized as a country now than we were a decade or so ago, and I think it is precisely because we have teh immediate, around-the-clock access (via broadcast media and the internet) to the kind of information and speculation that only Washington insiders used to have. The average Googlemonkey blogger today has as clear a view of the inner workings of Washington as the best reporters did a few years ago.

QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Aug 18, 2005 -> 09:49 PM) Aw, where the hell is Jim when you need him? Doctor's orders! I was gonna ask if "bioavailability" is really a word, but the internet tells me it is. And I trust electrons! Certainly bioavailability is a word, and a mighty good one. As for aloe in beer, I'd think it would be overall detrimental to the body and mouthfeel of the beer. Seems like it would leave an oil slick on your beer, but I don't know. If it makes it to the states I'll be sure to try it. And Guiness has had it right all along. Of course beer is good for you!

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Aug 18, 2005 -> 09:17 AM) So anyways I'm in that period of a cold flu at the moment, where I've used so many tissues my upper part of my lip is starting to go well how do I say it, red and numb. Not the best feeling in the world let me tell you. And since it's been about my 3rd flu of the winter in 50 degree weather, it's probably a sign saying that if I move to the States in the future, it probably won't be to a cold weather place in the winter. Well, that's what you get for having your winter right in the middle of summer.
