QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Feb 14, 2005 -> 01:23 AM) Definitely better than the old Dolph Lundgren one ::shudder:: It was nice that they stayed true for the most part to the Garth Ennis story for when he was writing Punisher. IMDB gives it a 6.2/10 which is what I'd give it about. As a huge fan of the comic the Punisher, I liked the movie a lot. It left me lacking a little bit but it was a solid film. The funny story behind that Lundgren Punisher crapfest was that it was only turned into a Punisher film in post-production. They shot all teh principle photography and his character's name wasn'r even right. Then Marvel threatened a lawsuite because the vigelante character was essentiallt their Punisher character. A compromise was reached and they reshot and voiced over some spots to call him Frank a couple of times and voila' - a Punisher movie. That explaines the lack of the cool costume in that one - or of any supporting cast members that could be traced to Marvel Universe origins. Remember this was long before Hollywood had the current string of Marvel Universe blockusters. See for example, the barely released Fantastic Four movie from that time where Ben Grimm's costume was essentially a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle costume that had been painted and rock-a-fied. I had the misfortune of seeing that film and it was abysmal.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Feb 14, 2005 -> 10:44 AM) Maybe Jim can correct me if I am wrong, but isn't this pretty common behavior for viruses? Don't they adapt to drugs fairly quickly, and mutate into something else that is resistant? I seem to remember there been a couple new strains of TB that were untreatable. I think that is also why they have started to discourage use of anti-biotics at the drop of a hat, because that also speeds up the process of viruses becoming immune. I have to run and give a lecture and only read the first couple paragraphs of the article, but I'd say it's bad news. And you are mostly correct in your above assessment, other than needing to keep in mind that viral and bacterial pathogens are very different entities. antibiotics treat only bacterial pathogens not viral ones, so they will not select for drug resistance in HIV. Other drugs will, however, and so the heart of your statements are essentially correct. With something like TB, antibiotics can speed up artificial selection for resistant strains because the pathogen is a bacterium (Mycobacterium tuberculosis). You're also quite correct in saying that mutation and adaptation are the norm in many viral pathogens. It's downright scary when you look at it. Something like your garden variety flu virus has four different active sites that where our vaccines latch on and have an effect. The new vaccines developed every year are basically made to be up to date (actually, already 1 year out of date) as far as their ability to effectively interactive with the virus at those sites. Most epidemiologists agree that if any two of those sites mutated into something our drugs couldn't get a handle on, we would see a worldwide flu epidemic with a major fatality component. Like I said, it's a scary but very possible proposition.

Have a great one!

Typical. Must have been poor upbringing - definately the parents' fault. I'd venture that Keyes has just committed political suicide.

QUOTE(winodj @ Feb 13, 2005 -> 12:21 PM) They wrapped the Reichstag in shiny silver fabric. I thought I took some good pics tho. Yeah, that was it. I've never seen pics of that. And it's not your pictures, Bro - the installation just doesn't do it for me like some of his other stuff. Maybe a lot of it has to do with how buy Central Park already is visually. There is not the juxtaposition between mountains or desert and the art pieces, as there was in the others.

QUOTE(Goldmember @ Feb 13, 2005 -> 01:18 AM) interesting, didn't hear they were doing this. had to study and watch a video on 'running fence' a couple semesters ago... Running Fence was very cool, and I liked the one they did with the big umbrellas in the desert too. I was excited to hear they were doing the Cental Park "Gates" installation, but the pictures leave me a little flat. Seems very busy compared to their stuff out west. I've never seen images of the big installation they did in former East Germany a few years ago... what was that one called?

QUOTE(RibbieRubarb @ Feb 12, 2005 -> 03:38 PM) Taking into account his marraige, his best friend was Russ Meyer, his desire to write porn films earlier in his career that feature large-busted babes...yeah I see how you could see that. :headshake :headshake All well and good. My sources just tell me otherwise.

QUOTE(The Critic @ Feb 12, 2005 -> 10:01 AM) Ebert does seem to give better ratings to s***ty films if there's nudity - it's like he starts with a 2-star rating - one star for each titty. My guess is that he is overcompensating to keep up appearances. I'm fairly certain Ebert is of the non-het'ro persuasion.

QUOTE(mreye @ Feb 11, 2005 -> 03:19 PM) Why was the babay in critical condition? What did she do to this kid? Lock her up! May just have been the situation - self-delivery, several hours old, umbilicus AND placenta still attached, she may not have cleared the mouth and windpipe all that well, obviously she didn't take time to nurse the child... Add her story to an infant that obviously would have appeared distressed, and they probably quickly listed him as critical. That's probably the best call, since the infant would have immediately been handled as a critical care case. Even if they later decide the initial condition should have been a downgrade, the kid got the attention it should have at the time.
-
QUOTE(Steff @ Feb 11, 2005 -> 03:12 PM) Un-effing-real :headshake Yes, but a heck of a lot better as far as the health prognosis for the kid. I'm sure there will still be families willing to take in this child that was "merely" abandoned, instead of thrown from a car.

Well, seeing as a sequel is kind of out of the question, I guess a Special Edition is the way to go.

Yes it's nice. It would have been nicer if she entered into the debate before the election, but I can understand why she would not, obviously.

I hated The Cricible when I had to read it in 8th grade, but liked it a lot more when we were hit with it again in high school. Death of a Salesman is a long-time favorite. I never knew he did the Monroe movie screenplay.

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Feb 11, 2005 -> 12:48 AM) Score! For who? Big Tobacco, Big Medicine, Big Corporate Anybody who now has little fear of actually being held accountable for their actions, since the federal courts are rather dismissive of class action suits. This is so anti-state's rights it should be scorned by any true republican who would give the thought of local governance more than lip service – except it's such a win for Big Unaccountable Corporate Anybody nobody is going to let their polital convictions get in teh way of that. Don't get me wrong. I DON'T agree that the lawyers bringing these suits should have been able to shop for the most agrreable state to try cases in. But the present solution is, again, treating dandruff by decapitation. The more reasonable solution would have been to, by default, make the state bringing the most claimants in on a suit the state in which the class action is tried. Better still to m aybe have all the states try the cases separately, but that would slow the legal process to a near standstill.

QUOTE(Steff @ Feb 10, 2005 -> 05:46 PM) But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus could have been Irish: 1. He never got married. 2. He was always telling stories. 3. He loved green pastures. More evidence in favor of the Irish theory: 4. He lived with his Mother till he was 30 (works for Irish and Jewish) 5. He hung out with the 12 toughest guys in the neighborhood 6. Amidst his last dying words he made sure to ASK FOR A DRINK!

QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ Feb 9, 2005 -> 11:09 PM) One time, my sister was volunteering on an Alzheimer's ward. It was music/quiet time, so there was this lady playing the harp and the lady that my sister was keeping company (a patient) out of no where, leans over to my sister and, without a word, licks her face. I like that story. Mistook her for a coffee table, eh?
