  1. Would anyone in Chicago really have a problem with naming rights to the EL if it meant the thing actually got fixed?
  2. QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Nov 25, 2007 -> 12:15 AM) I wonder why the write chose to say it was a "humiliating exit from public life". Politicians lose all the time. It is not like he lost 80% to 20% or something. The voters there were worried about the interest rates and stuff. Just wait until he signs the Kyoto crap and all sorts of things go sky high. You get what you vote for, or don't vote for. I think its because he didn't just lose the Prime Ministership, but he lost his seat in Parliament. That's what makes it humiliating. Just like when Tom Foley lost the Speakership of the House in 1994.... but not just because he lost the majority, but because he lost his seat in the House as well.
  3. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Nov 21, 2007 -> 10:12 AM) And there you go right down the slippery slope. Its not really lying, so Bush gets away with it too. Its politics. If we don't have standards for our Presidents, we don't have standards as a country. He lied under oath, and half of the country make excuses for him, while the other half wants his head. The sad thing was that wasn't even the worst thing he did, but that is a discussion for a different day I guess. Nope, you misread what I said. I didn't say he was honest. I do say that I don't think his testimony rose to the level of perjury.
  4. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Nov 21, 2007 -> 02:27 PM) So living in a country doesn't qualify you to understand foreign policy, but being the wife of the President who won't disclose her records, does qualify as experience? Please. If anything I side with Barrack on this one, as living in another country really helps you understand the culture better, which goes a long way towards shaping policy towards countries and regions. http://campaignspot.nationalreview.com/pos...DYzOTYwMzgwZjY= Just for the record, HRC has authorized the release of her records.
  5. Unleaded gas futures are trading around $2.50 a gallon right now. This doesn't factor in cost of delivery, mark-up or anything. So assuming that Joe Pumpjockey got his gas at this price - and isn't paying for delivery, and isn't marking it up at all for his customers, he would still have to add in the taxes. In PA that's 45.1 cents per gallon plus any sales tax that might be assessed in addition to the regular fuel taxes.
  6. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Nov 20, 2007 -> 07:16 PM) Actually I really respect the guy for actually admitting that all of the answers to all of the issues. I like the fact that he is willing to leave certian things to states rights, dispite the possibility of them going against his personal beliefs. I respect that a lot. I have yet to hear anyone else take positions like that. Maybe it's just because I read on his website the same platitudes I see on any Joe Conservative positions. He's willing to leave certain things to state's rights, unless he doesn't. He did vote for DOMA for example. And he wants to pressure for the end of Sanctuary Cities. Although a lot of you here might applaud that, that's not a states rights issue by any means.
  7. Well like I said, I don't know that what Clinton did under oath easily fits the definition of perjury. He may have dry humped that line, but I don't know that he crossed it.... I just don't think that what he did rose to the level of perjury, and I don't think that what he did would have gotten him convicted in a regular court either.

  10. Fred Thompson is more of an empty suit than anyone else out there right now IMO. Media age or not, I think he's pretty disconnected from a lot. It's not that he acts like its still 1980, I sometimes think he thinks its still 1980.
  11. I'm actually OK with that. Although I don't think what Clinton did was removable. But I can understand the need to fully investigate and prosecute any legitimate violation of the power of the office. I think that the Bush administration should definitely be fully investigated for a number of things. These investigations by Congress have been sadly not coming along nearly as quickly or with as much force as the GOP hacks like to claim, and they haven't been nearly as thorough as I'd personally like them to be.
  12. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Nov 20, 2007 -> 11:01 AM) And as you can see by Balta's timeline, there's always a "good" reason or justification for the Democrats to do what they need to do. Now those evil Re-pube-licans on the other hand... they're shady as all get out, and they need to be examined, you know, the full anal probe. You seem to forget that Clinton was impeached for a lot of the same thing.
  13. Obama Edwards makes no sense. Because John Edwards can not deliver North Carolina to an Obama ticket. What matters most for a VP pick is what states you can win with that person on the ticket. Warner would bring the ticket VA to the fold. But Warner will be VA's next Junior Senator. Bayh might bring IN to the fold, but that's a tough sell for a state that hasn't given a Democrat an electoral vote since 1960. Richardson would deliver NM to Obama... and might have a good halo effect in much of the Southwest and Mountain West. AZ, CO might fall into play. Tester or Schweitzer might bring MT to the Blue column and help a lot of other states get bluer, like Iowa, MN, Nebraska, Kansas....

  20. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Nov 16, 2007 -> 04:22 PM) oh goodie. Our country is trying to keep us in! I wouldn't read anything into that. I'm not accusing anyone of making that leap of faith right now... but one of the things I enjoy about being American is my freedom, and that includes freedom to travel. Having a big wall on our land borders would make it really really easy for some rogue administration to just shut the borders down.
  21. QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Nov 16, 2007 -> 08:10 AM) Except thiers was to keep people in. I am glad you believe in such openness. Why don't you also remove the front door to your house as well. And leave your car unlocked. After all, we wouldn't want to be stopping people from going where they aren't supposed to. It's really easy to start keeping people in, once that wall is built too. For "security."
  22. I think its great that the situation in Iraq has improved on the ground and that some sense of normalcy might actually be returning to Baghdad. That's great, and hopefully will last. At the same time, I don't think its irresponsible to start attaching some strings to continued funding. There are a lot of issues with mission focus that have yet to be addressed and have yet to be addressed. Strings attached on funding helps start that process. I'm glad that Senator Reid is finally showing the sack to insist on it for passage.
  23. Hey if it worked for Germany...
  24. While we're on the subject. The Democrats are passing a $50 billion Iraq budget supplement to "bridge fund" the efforts. The bill has some "strings" attached. 1. The US must begin limited troop withdrawals by the end of the year. (Something which the White House has already announced it will do.) 2. The US must state a goal of withdrawing the majority of combat forces from Iraq by the end of 2008. (There is no timetable for withdrawal, nor any absolute directive to do so - just to state that goal.) The bill also requires all government interrogators must follow procedures for interrogation prescribed in the Army field manual (i.e. specifically outlaws waterboarding), and the White House to certify all units being sent to theater as "mission capable" 15 days prior to deployment (although this could be waived in times of emergency.) The Bush administration says it will veto the bill, should it reach his desk. It looks certain for easy passage in the House. In the Senate, prospects are less certain - because the GOP leadership opposes the bill's "strings" (which - again - are already basically met) Harry Reid, in a rare show of balls, has said this is the only funding bill he'll allow for a vote... i.e. if this doesn't become law, bridge funding won't happen until 2008. http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/20...ll_N.htm?csp=34
  25. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 14, 2007 -> 12:57 PM) What about Mr. Paul? I haven't seen enough detailed information about his foreign policy other than we should talk to people that really interests me. He did vote to outlaw gay parents adopting children in Washington D.C.
