  1. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jan 20, 2008 -> 03:11 PM) Basically, they were on McCain's bus until there was a chance that Huckabee was going to be the ® guy. Then, about Thanksgiving time, he (Huckabee) was the best thing ever (because in reality he was the worst thing ever). As soon as the "new media" absolutely crushed Huckabee and vetted his real stances (he's a f***ing jackass in an elephant's clothing) then all of a sudden McCain is now the glory boy again - for the same reason - he's a jackass in an elephant's clothes. That's also why you see so many left leaning people, even on this board, that would consider voting for him. He's as much a Democrat as Zell Miller is.
  2. It will be because South Carolina was a contested state, Nevada wasn't really. Florida is the big test. McCain needs a win there, and its pretty much golden for him. If Guiliani pulls a win out of his ass, we're going to the GOP convention without a candidate.
  3. By the way, Obama really won Nevada. Despite Hillary winning more caucus delegates, because of the geographic location of the delegates that Obama and Hillary won, Obama is awarded 13, Clinton 12.
  4. Thompson is entirely the reason that McCain won in SC. Thompson sucking out about 20% in a lot of districts that Huckabee is what saved McCain narrowly in SC. Had Thompson dropped out after Michigan, McCain would be drifting to obscurity once again in the Presidential fight.
  5. I think Clinton's voter suppression claim in NV is going to hurt Obama more than any gaffe about Ronald Reagan.
  6. I think Obama is officially done. Unless he wins strong in SC, nothing stops Hillary.
  7. Our company only provides bonuses to service people. To the sales agents, like myself, who live week to week off of commission, we get nothing. It kind of sucks because December is the worst month of the year for sales.
  8. I just rediscovered the Hey Hey My My Yo Yo album by Junior Senior. It was recorded in 2005 and wasn't released in the US til last fall. But the re-release came with a new 8 song EP. It's a bit of a disappointment. It's like they were hanging out in the studio with Depeche Mode. And that makes me sad.
  9. And this is one of those things where context is key. Obama didn't praise what Reagan did, more what he could do in terms of reaching out to people.
  10. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 18, 2008 -> 01:52 PM) This is all so mental it isn't even funny. We have been being talked into a recession for six months now, and this is their way of talking us out of it. That amount of money is so small, it wouldn't really have a noticable economic effect on a 6 TRILLION dollar economy. Besides by the time this actually hits the economy and flows through, odds are we would be coming out of the slump without this help anyway. It really is pointless. You don't think the housing bubble bursting coupled with a credit crunch finally reaching critical mass with Joe Consumer is more than a mental reason for recession?
  11. Romney might pull out SC too... but Guiliani still polls pretty strong in FL btw, and that would be a big bump to his flagging campaign. A strong Thompson finish in SC, like a strong second makes him suddenly viable again too. Since most states are not winner take all, we could have an open convention on the GOP side. Too many people to clear out to make this happen.
  12. A Thompson win in SC and a Guiliani win in FL would be most excellent.
  13. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jan 17, 2008 -> 06:10 PM) Hillarity is going to be our next president. There's pretty much no one who can stop the machine. I think I called this about two years ago. Praying I'm wrong, Kap You could be. If its super close in NV or Obama wins, and Obama wins in SC. What happens after that is really unclear. Hillary wins NY, but maybe not NJ. CA becomes an even draw... and the other states who knows?
  14. Not all caucuses are like the Iowa Democratic Caucus. A lot of them do allow secret balloting.
  15. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 16, 2008 -> 03:48 PM) No idea how it'll actually play up north, but I don't have a problem with a little creativity in campaign ads now and then. That's a really good commercial.
  16. QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Jan 15, 2008 -> 09:42 PM) While he didn't endorse a candidate on the Dem side, Kos was trying to organize the koskids to vote for Huckabee in Michigan. Actually it was Romney.
  17. QUOTE(Reddy @ Jan 14, 2008 -> 10:42 PM) Edwards message hinges on corporate greed. Obama used to take lobbyist money and he says that they'll have a seat at his table... so this is similar to Edwards how? Your media blackout argument would be a lot more convincing without the Newsweek cover picture next to it.
  18. QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Jan 13, 2008 -> 10:17 PM) Has there ever been a serious proposal to privatize mass transit? Daley seems to like to sell off city assets, maybe he can work with the state and just sell them mass transit. While there may be examples of good goverment management in action, the CTA sure isn't it. NYC Public Transit was mostly private up until the mid 50's. Both private companies running their subway systems failed and got bailed out by the city. The South Shore used to be a purely private entity. If I recall, it came within 24 hours of shutting down in the 1980s. Metra was a conglomeration of commuter railroads. They all failed. The private ferry commuter system in New York City area needs bailout after bailout. And a few routes have been taken over by area governments I believe. Because these efforts fill a definite public need, there is a need for support from the governments who are supposed to provide for them.
  19. Iraq could have worked out btw, but it was done on the cheap... which led to four years plus of mess.
  20. QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Jan 12, 2008 -> 08:14 PM) Every Michigan (D) SHOULD be voting for a (D). But I am sure we'll here about how the Michigan ®'s voted for some (D)'s in the past, and that somehow makes it ok. Michigan has an open primary. Michigan has only Clinton and Kucinich on the ballot because everyone else pulled their names from the ballot since there are no delegates at stake. GOP crossover in 1988 is why Jesse Jackson won the MI primary actually. I'm all about crosspollution in as many primaries as possible. Simply because I want parties to close their primaries, and the quickest way to do it is to hand Ron Paul a win, or Mitt Romney. Democrats should decide who runs for the Democrats. Republicans should decide who runs for the Republicans.
  21. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jan 11, 2008 -> 02:10 PM) Ok, now here is where I make a weird turn. You're exactly right with this post. And tell me something, why is this so wrong? They come over here, they kill 3,000 of our people on our own soil, and now everyone wants to just shrug it off and say, no big deal, we should have left them alone. I struggle with this because I understand the need to let people live their own lives without forcing our way of life on people. I get that. But I also see the need to unlock the seed of "democracy", even if we don't like the outcome, as long as it gives ordinary people a chance to succeed where they may not have before. I also realize that we need to root out the extremeism, yet, no one wants to do the dirty work necessary to do that. It's really a catch-22 in my mind. Here's the problem, we aren't interested in "any" democracy. We're interested in democracy that stands with us. We are more interested in tryrants who align with us (Saudi Arabia, Pakistan) then we are in democratically elected governments (Palestine). And by including Iraq in a broad brush with the rest of the extremist muslim world, you kinda point out how bad of a choice that Iraq really was for the bulkhead of a new revolution. For all its annoyances, Iraq was relatively secular, and not at all an issue when it came to transglobal terror. The truth is, if we really wanted this neocon revolution, the place to have started it would have been Iran. I think IROI support within its own nation is fairly shallow and could have resulted in a lot better outcome. It also would have been strategically better by continuing to isolate Iraq, create a physical connection to Afghanistan. However, it would have been harder to make happen... so not really an option.
  22. The reason this doesn't work is because the working poor spend a far greater percentage of their income on things that would be taxable. The wealthier people don't have to. A gallon of milk is 3.50 if you make 10,000 or 10,000,000 a year. Rarely is the millionaire going to be drinking that much more milk because he can.
  23. What helped me shock myself into a better diet was a limited period of vegetarianism. It forced me to try, eat and like other kinds of food that I would have never before considered.
  24. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 9, 2008 -> 09:27 PM) He may end up someone's VP or, more likely, SecState or SecEnergy. If not, then yeah, I'd bet he goes for a Senate seat. If he runs for Senate, he wins the seat in a walk, and probably cuts a deal with Dean and Reid to immediately enter the leadership. With him in that open seat race, you could argue that a 4-6 seat pickup projection in the senate just became 5-7.
  25. QUOTE(vandy125 @ Jan 9, 2008 -> 07:55 PM) So, the majority can't say anything when they may see something wrong? Yep, sounds like a democracy to me! Really, looked like a sense of humor to me.
