  1. All this spy talk makes me wonder where Coop hides the microfilm.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 12, 2011 -> 04:22 PM) Too bad exactly this didn't happen with the Tea Party. Instead they were mocked as idiots and racists, and now people are crying that the same thing is being done to the Occupy movement. Funny how that works. The reason it's happening with the Occupy movement is that the movement's face are the crazies who show up at these events. Since the movement has no public face or spokespeople, its really easy to paint a broad brush. I should point out that when I walked past Occupy Philly, there were a lot of Ron Paul people there.
  3. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Oct 12, 2011 -> 09:31 PM) The question is, will the Republicans try and buy him on the 9-9-9 plan. If you make it absurd hes probably dead in the water, but if you make it seem at all legitimate, its catchy and in a crowded field its something people will remember. I dont think hed do well in a national election, he is not polished enough. Democrats may be apathetic to a Romney, but Cain is going to rile people up. I think once it's shown that 9-9-9 actually doubles taxes for a family earning 50,000 dollars a year, he'll fade. Although truth be told, he's looking like someone whos running for a cable tv contract rather than President. You might actually want to make appearances in early primary states if you want to be competitive.
  4. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 12, 2011 -> 01:59 PM) Georgia wants to replace firefighters with prisoners The best part about this, is the benefit for prisoners is that they would only have to wait five years instead of ten to be a firefighter after they were released from prison.
  5. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 12, 2011 -> 01:49 PM) Well that's just idiotic. Understatement. One of the last things you cut is basic public safety and law enforcement. And even if you cut back, you don't just decide to not prosecute an entire class of violent crime. Seriously, anyone suggesting that is a good idea needs to be removed from the gene pool. Put them on an island or something. In Kansas in 2009, there was a homicide related directly to Domestic Violence, roughly every 10 days. http://www.accesskansas.org/kbi/stats/docs...009_DV_Rape.pdf
  6. Government austerity is now leading to the decriminalization of domestic violence in Kansas. For serious. http://slatest.slate.com/posts/2011/10/12/...udget_cuts.html
  7. I would argue that if the stimulus had actually focused on real spending rather than 50+% on tax cuts, the original stimulus would have been much stronger. On another topic, I would like to point out that the UAW, who worked with the Obama administration and the auto industry to save the American auto industry can now say that they have managed to guarantee nearly 8000 additional jobs in the last two weeks with Ford and Chrysler. This is an example of a bad union turned good - maintaining good relationships with the companies it works for (and in this case, partially owns) has really helped the worker's seat at the table matter in a positive manner both for their community and the company they work with.
  8. So the Republicans blocked the American Jobs Act in the Senate yesterday. I would make a joke about needing that debate time to consider Michelle Bachmann's "Save the Incandecent Lightbulb Bill," but that would either be too A) Accurate or B) too much work for them to consider.
  9. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Oct 11, 2011 -> 09:49 PM) Not in your world. It's time to negotiate. Well if it was good enough for Reagan....
  10. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Oct 12, 2011 -> 09:42 AM) The college isn't forcing those degrees on them, so they shouldn't get pissed at the college, they should get pissed at themselves for paying to learn a useless skill set. I don't feel sorry for people like that. They fall into the "love what you do no matter what the drawbacks are" category of bulls*** that I hear spewed all the time. If you love what you do that much, don't complain about the money...and if you do complain about the money, it means you actually "love" money more than what it is you ended up doing, so maybe you should have thought about that before. People have poor planning skills and no future mindset, and that's their own problem...not societies. Society has created opportunity, a whole bunch of opportunity, just because you chose the wrong one in terms of what they pay, "because you love it", don't then turn around and blame society for creating "too much choice" for you. After all, you could have been lucky enough to have been born in China, where you could work at Foxxconn building iPhones for 2$ a day, instead. For a lot of people, it should be said, what you learn in college doesn't really factor much into what you do. My degree is in French. I have had almost (but not quite) 0 use for my degree in my professional world. The subject matter of your degree matters less in the professional world than you would think.
  11. IIRC, there were regular groups of Norse coming to Canada for logging well before Columbus.
  12. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Oct 10, 2011 -> 05:30 PM) But, but, but, vote fraud just doesn't happen! Petition fraud and vote fraud are two different things.
  13. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 11:32 AM) This is not true, and I'm tired of people saying it. Girardi was a bench coach, and the vast majority of managers in at least the last 30 years gained experience as coaches or minor league managers before becoming big league managers. You have to start going 50 years back to get a good amount of managers who had no experience whatsoever. I also don't know why people use Joe Torre as an example. As a player/manager or a manager with the New York Mets, (when he first started) he had a proud .425 winning percentage.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 10:55 AM) A poll where she has 15%. Boy that really captures the people doesn't it! Ron Paul is right behind her, why didn't he get the same sort of media attention? Rick Perry is at 16%. If he's top tier, I would think 15% puts her right in the thick of it. The 20 point deficit in a general election makes her a lot less serious of a candidate.
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 10:10 AM) They have spent the last four years following her around like a puppy because "she could be President", when there was never a reality of that happening. Singlehandedly they kept her as relevant, just so they could use her as a threat over what could happen. It was purely a fear tactic. Must have been the left wing conspiracy that bought her a campaign bus.
  16. QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 5, 2011 -> 05:22 PM) Palin - Perry would be a dream ticket. Yes, a very bad dream.
  17. The worst thing anyone who wants to make a Presidential run can do is run for VP, especially if the candidate loses. If they aren't entrenched in a state's party, it can really create a carpetbagger vibe the next time they want to run at home.
  18. The honest answer? Because the Republican party hasn't really been interested in Job Creation, unless it means more Republican asses in chairs in Washington D.C. This may not be the case with many Repbulican congressmen, but the path has been pretty clear since February of 2009, that within the leadership of the GOP, politics has taken a back seat to any sense of governing responsibly.
  19. I think Romney won't bring Christie on when he gets the nod. Geographically it doesn't make sense, and it doesn't do a lot to excite the base of GOP voters - and this is going to be a lot more like 2004 than 2008 - where its a race to bring out the base.
  20. Zebras do not reside in Yakima.
  21. Cain is a boomlet. Nothing much to see there beyond the next few weeks IMO. Bachmann was polling neck and neck with Romney two months ago.
  22. The Obama administration essentially renegotiated those treaties to help repair some of the risks to American workers that this entails, from what I understand. This is one thing that I am glad that the Obama administration flipped on this term.
  23. A friend of mine was arrested this weekend on the Brooklyn Bridge protest. Protesters were given the choice of walking on the pedestrian causeway, or walking on the roadway. Protesters were also told that they were closing the Brooklyn Bridge to traffic FOR the protest, but they were also told that they risked arrest by walking on the roadway. It was termed "a different action." Most of those protesters knew that they risked arrest. I don't know how I feel about the Occupy Wall Street protests. I see the validity, but I am concerned by the lack of a message or goal. I guess you could call me mildly sympathetic, but wary.
  24. QUOTE (Tex @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 06:21 AM) He managed this season like he wanted to leave. I have a lot of great Oz memories from his days as a player and as a manager. Calling for Bobby is etched in my mind. Also my favorite Oz memory.
  25. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Sep 24, 2011 -> 10:16 AM) http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/09/22/...E78L3NL20110922 Clearly, Obama hates you Balta. And our government is just here to help, as always. Haha, cute. The details of this decision were finalized in 2008. Under the Bush administration. So, clearly George Bush doesn't care about Wheezing People.
