  1. I guess the answer is to reply to actual responses and ignore the sniping. At least not unless the sniping is really funny.
  2. Heads, that's seriously the best post ever.
  3. Actually, so here's the full quote. Context included, from the CFR transcript. So what I'm gathering from this full quote is that Carter was asked to be a part of the group to develop a reorganization of the UNHCR. I'm also gathering that he was told what the US position was and our ambassador said something different. When he mentioned it to Rice, Rice said that Bolton spoke out of turn. Then went and supported her ambassador leaving Carter out to dry. That's Carter's story. So Carter was asked to help reorganize the UNHCR and found a compromise that the US originally agreed with and decided not to like later. Carter said, I hope the compromise passes and the US is outvoted in its proposal. Because he has a vested interest in the compromise that he was asked to draft. Because he has an honest disagreement with US policy. But I forgot, once you leave office, you aren't allowed to comment on US policy anymore.
  4. The only place I saw this is in the New York Sun. I don't know how much I can buy it. I went and searched Google News for something similar. CNS News picked it up and a s*** ton of Republican blogs picked it up. But the Washington Times doesn't even have a mention of this. And they would have if it actually had happened. I'm not saying that Carter didn't say what he was quoted as saying, but I'm not sure that I buy that he actually did at the moment.
  5. Jimmy Carter writes with other Nobel Peace Prize Laureates about the proposed compromise. http://www.iht.com/articles/2006/03/05/opinion/edjimmy.php
  6. When I saw this headline, I thought "Why does Ozzie need his wrist to manage?"
  7. Balta, there are people who don't want to pay for this set of repairs.

  9. There's a Fox Reality Channel?
  10. It doesn't hurt your district because someone else gets more. It only hurts your district if services you need aren't being provided to pay for a 'bridge to nowhere'.
  11. Jackie, I think you make an excellent pork, er point. It's not really the job of the President to piecemeal out pieces of legislation. The problem has more to do with the giant omnibus bills that make it easy to attach giant stupid projects to them. Although porkbarrel spending is inevitable, I think if we elected officials who cared less about that and more about responsible government, we'd solve the problem faster.
  12. I want there to be a DVD with just the 500 word essay frames at the end of the episodes of Dharma and Greg. Not the actual shows, just the frames.
  13. In defense of us, this and the Filibuster in general. Southsider, you and I are friends. It bothers me a lot to hear you say that this board has done more to make you a straight ticket Republican. Not that I think you should go one side or the other. If I lived in Michigan City, I highly doubt that I'd be voting for the local dems either. But it always bothers me to hear this from someone. Because the truth is, if the behavior of this board is a bellwether of anything - it's more of the fact that extreme partisanship is, indeed, annoying. I will say this. There has been a lot of disrespect in this board for a long time. Some of it crosses the line, some of it doesn't. And its a sad atmosphere that we have some posters here who are now afraid of starting threads because they don't want to be labelled as something that they don't consider themselves to be. There are those of us here who actually like to discuss politics. Some of us who happen to find an interesting article and want to share it with other people. Sometimes its a biased column. Sometimes its just an interesting news article that may or may not put someone in a bad light. And the sad thing is, that on more than one occasion the mere posting of a link to an AP or Reuters story has had a poster branded as one thing or another. I'll agree that we could do without the "Politician is a stupid idiot" threads. But SS, why don't you look at who posts them. In defense of my side of the aisle, it's not us who can't seem to go 15 posts without bringing up Chappaquiddick, or how Carter or Clinton sucked worse than any president in modern history. I don't think that this particular part of the message board is anymore worthless than any other to be honest. Occasionally really good debate and discussion takes place here. We even find agreement occasionally - see the Katrina thread. But maybe you're right. Maybe the world does need six more pages talking about Nick and Jessica's divorce.
  14. Except its not going to happen in this Congress.
  15. Why do you think the cop thought he had HIV?
  16. Except the guy was HIV negative, and the police officer did not do chest compressions. He did nothing.
  17. If you're watching the evening's festivities - post it here. Still don't know if I'm going to suffer the indignity, BUT Jon Stewart IS hosting...
  18. I think if they're worth holding in a pen for three years, they're worth at least being told why they're being held for so long - and given some degree of legal access.

  21. Probably not. It was one of the 9/11 Commission recommendations that got passed by Congress and signed into law by the President. However, this commission remained unfunded and unstaffed for 15 months. Finally, they are starting to schedule hearings for this oversight board. It has no subpoena power and no budget. It will be looking over domestic wiretapping, data mining and the Patriot Act and it's chair will be Carol Dinkins. Carol Dinkins is the law partner of Alberto Gonzalez. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11677336/site/newsweek/ The chair of the 9/11 commission is pissed about it. Thomas Kean, former Republican governor of New Jersey, sounds off in the link.
