Howard Dean said no in December. A lot of folk here jumped at the chance to crucify him. Turns out he might have just been ahead of his time. Bill O'Reilly says no too. So does William Buckley, founder of National Review. So the question worth asking: Is Iraq still winnable?

QUOTE(minors @ Feb 25, 2006 -> 01:37 AM) Then that judge needs to be removed from the bench he took an oath to honor the laws in that state. By deciding not to give someone the DP even though his crimes are DP crimes, just on the grounds of his or her religon is not following the law. Why? The death penalty isn't a requirement. It's a sentencing option.

O'Reilly starts petition to fire Oblermann
Rex Kickass replied to Balta1701's topic in The Filibuster
Actually Olbermann's ratings are doing very well for MSNBC. About a year ago, he was averaging about 250,000 viewers nightly. That's closing in on 400K now. Still about a fifth of O'Reilly's ratings, but still a lot of growth. (And he's about the best thing that MSNBC has going in the money demo.) -
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 02:44 PM) Aren't they working on an expansion of the Panama canal? I thought I remembered seeing something on History or Discovery to that extent? Wouldn't change the cruise thing. Cruising through the Panama Canal is quite expensive so only a couple lines have semi regular cruises (Princess, Holland America and Celebrity.) And those only travel through one lock to save on taxes. Usually the transcanal cruises are reserved for repositioning sailings to move a ship to Alaska or the Caribbean.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 02:39 PM) That is true. The government (at least at the federal level) needs to stay the hell out of this issue. At every level. The issues at stake here roll down to things like hospital visitation.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 02:34 PM) Actually, I believe he's almost 100% right on that. Rex, you're wrong. How dare you ever show your face here again. Go listen to your western music. Most cruise ships are "Post Panamax" which means that they can not actually enter the Panama Canal because they just won't fit.
-
QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 02:25 PM) The Panama Canal is mostly a cruise ship channel. You're absolutely wrong on this. Love Rex Kickass, the travel agent.

On the second issue, I think the GOP is far off your views - let alone the Dems. On education, I think with the right argument - very possibly.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 02:15 PM) Then your saying the states should be able to decide whether or not abortion should be allowed in their states ... or gay marriage? Abortion, yes. Although I'd like to see a federal legalization of it. Gay Marriage, no. It's a constitutional question regarding equal rights and protections under the law as far as I'm concerned.

SD state legislature voting to ban abortion
Rex Kickass replied to samclemens's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 02:11 PM) From your site....About 140,000 second trimester abortions are performed yearly. They represent 9% of the total. Some are performed because the woman simply does not wish to remain pregnant. That's way to many for me...I don't care if it's like only 9%. The 1.2 million/year number is too dam high. Abortion is not a form of birth control. D&X i thought is what we were talking about. The second trimester is a weird place. The viability line lies in there, but its toward the later half... someone who's one week in their second trimester is in a vastly different part of their pregnancy than someone whos 23 weeks in. -
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 12:25 PM) Which part? Maybe those issues were discussed a lot before I started posting in here a few months ago. I don't think that Democrats are far off from you when it comes to states rights issues.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 01:58 PM) Now, again, if I'm not mistaken, the only other bid offered in this particular deal involving the UAE came out of a company in Singapor. Referencing Balta's post about LA, and asking the question again, where was the indignation when this deal occured? It sadly went unnoticed.

SD state legislature voting to ban abortion

From religioustolerance.org regarding the reason for D&X (Partial Birth) procedures. Estimates place the procedure to be somewhere around one quarter of one percent of pregnancy termination procedures overall. -
QUOTE(YASNY @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 01:47 PM) Don't we have ports where China is basically supplying the same services the UAE are supposed to provide? I believe I read that somewhere. If so, do you think the Chinese government has no input on policy? If so, why was there no groundswell of objection to that scenario. In my opinion, that is much more disturbing than the UAE in the same position. Honestly, I think they ought to get booted out of control. I think the Federal government's role is to keep its borders secure - which would mean Port Administration in my book.

SD state legislature voting to ban abortion

Some pro-choice people believe that its immoral to jeopardize the health of someone already living outside of the womb to possibly save the life of someone living inside the womb because of law. Some pro-choice people believe that this is primarily a public health issue and not a political one and feels that decisions should be left up to patients and doctors. Some pro-choice people can't imagine having to be in the position of ever having to make that decision and sure as hell wouldn't feel right making that decision for them. -
I'm opposed to this. But it's not because they're Arab, not because its a Bush administration decision, or anything like that. It's because I'm not comfortable with private industry controlling our entry/exit points for cargo and people. I'm definitely not comfortable with firms owned by foreign governments controlling the same.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 24, 2006 -> 12:13 PM) That's a noble cause. I think part of my suddenly lefty position is because many of the issues I lean right on are not discussed much here. Issues like gun control/2nd amendment, states' rights, affirmative action, federal funding and budgetary issues and crime and punishment, for example, haven't gotten much play here (except for the death penalty). If they did, I'd probably look like a true GOPerhead. I don't think that's necessarily the case.

One thing I'm really proud of in the last year is that I think I helped a statesman get elected. For all the politics that surrounds Jon Corzine, he's gonna try to push through a really tough budget to try to get NJ back in fiscal shape. It could seriously derail his chances at future election. Plus he's a White Sox fan.
